After the phone call, Raina returned to the table. All except Kabir, who was still eating his breakfast, had left.
"It looks like we have the day free," Kabir told Raina. "So do you want to do some sight seeing or is there something else you have in mind? Di told me to have you back by 4.30 though."
"Sightseeing sounds great," she replied. "But I do want to get that appointment out of the way before we head out."
"Sounds like a plan," Kabir said.
Raina watched as Kabir ate his breakfast in silence. He seemed to be back in his usual solemn self.
"What's your family like?" Raina asked, voicing her thoughts out loud.
By the look Kabir had on his face, she immediately regretted it.
"I'm sorry," she told him. "I shouldn't have asked."
Kabir shovelled a spoon full of omelette into his mouth. He swallowed.
"Do you really want to know?" Kabir asked in return, shocking Raina.
"Will you tell me if I said yes?" Raina inquired, unsure about Kabir's reaction. During the entire duration of knowing him, Raina knew that Kabir could be unpredictable.
"I'll tell you," he answered. "But after you bore me with yours."
"Huh?" Raina gaped. "Why?"
"Because you're my friend," he responded. "And I hardly know anything about you. So, come on. Story time!"
Kabir bounced about in his seat like a little excited child.
"Alright," Raina relented. "I an only child. I currently live with my mum and nani (maternal grandma)... I feel stupid. Aren't I supposed to be the doctor?"
"Oh come on Raina," Kabir coaxed. "You're doing fine. Aur waise bhi (And besides), it's about time someone gave you a taste of your own medicine, doctorji."
"You're enjoying this aren't you?" Raina asked, annoyed.
"Yup," he replied, popping the 'p'. "Too much."
"You're evil," she groaned. "At least when I'm doing it, I'm a bit more sympathetic."
"Ok sorry," he said. "Then, let's try this. Hum date ek date par hain (We're on a date)... And we're getting to know each other. 3... 2... 1... Action!"
"Are you serious?" Raina asked in disbelief.
"Haan," Kabir replied. "If you can play games with me, why can't I do the same? Now, action."
Kabir sat up straight and gave Raina his full attention.
"Toh (So) Dr. Raina Jaitley," he continued. "Please enlighten me. What is your family like?"
Raina smiled but decided to play along.
"Ok," she relented. "Like I said, I'm an only child. I live with my mom and nani (grandma)."
"Mom ka naam kya hai? (What's your mom's name?)" Kabir interrupted.
"Can you let me finish?" Raina chided.
"I was just trying to help," Kabir retorted. "Now, please co-operate with me."
"Fine," Raina grumbled. "My mom's name is Sonia. You're very bossy, you know. Mere nani ki naam bhi jaana chahiye? (Do you also want to know my grandma's name?)"
"It's ok," he scowled. "Rehnde. (Leave it be.) What about your dad?"
A look of sadness etched across Raina's face.
"He's..." Raina's voice trailed off. "He's no more."
"I'm sorry," Kabir said. Suddenly, he felt bad for asking. "Were you close?"
"Very," she replied with a melancholic smile. "Mom said we're practically joined at the hip. We'd always get into trouble together but then he'd also get us out. He's my biggest supporter but he's also very protective of me. He would have never let me done this."
Kabir smiled.
"He sounds like a great man," he told her.
"You would have liked him," she confessed.
"I would," he said.
The two remain in silence, allowing Raina to recompose herself.
"What about you?" Raina asked, a hint of brokenness in her voice. Kabir could tell the loss of her father greatly affected her. "What's your family like?"
"I'm the eldest," he answered. "My parents divorced when I was two. My biological father died the year after from a car crash."
"I'm sorry," Raina said.
"It's ok," he replied. "I never knew him anyway. My mom remarried the year after and then had Ayesha and Arjun. I didn't have a good relationship with anyone except with Ayesha."
"Why?" Raina asked.
"I don't know," Kabir confessed. "Ever since the first time I held her in my arms, I promised that I'd protect her and be the best bhai (brother) ever for the rest of her life. I was 6."
"Aur (And) Arjun?" Raina asked.
Kabir lets out a chuckle.
"Call it whatever you want," he continued. "But that boy had always been trouble for me ever since he was born."
Raina's mind wandered back to the conversation she shared with Sameer.
"Kabir hates his parents. He hates them more than he hates Tara. He blames his mom for ruining the family and his dad for leaving him. His mom remarries and suddenly, he's no longer important."
"What happened between the both of you?" Raina asked. "You can't just hate someone without reason. You're a sensible person."
Suddenly, yesterday's events came flooding in her mind.
"Most of the time," she added.
"I don't know, yaar," he told her. He wrecked his mind for that exact moment he started hating Arjun but couldn't pin point one. "I just never got along with him."
"Kyun? (Why?)" Raina prodded. "Let's put it this way. How was it like growing up alone and how different was it compared to growing up with Ayesha and then Arjun?"
"It was all very different," Kabir replied. "I don't recall much of when I growing up alone. I remembered what it felt like though. It was just my mother and I against the world. Phir (Then), my stepfather change it when he stepped into the picture. I don't hate him but I don't like him either. He makes my mother happy so, I was fine with him. Then, Ayesha was born. You know, I honestly did not know what to do with her. She was my first experience with babies and crying girls."
"You must have been terrified," Raina joked.
"Of course," he confessed. "And confused. I might have even spoilt her a little too much. Serves me right."
"And Arjun?" Raina asked.
"Arjun was different," he answered. "He was a fighter ever since he was born. Three and a half weeks premature. He was so tiny that the doctors said it would be hard for him to survive... But he did. And look at him now. Spoilt brat!"
"Sounds like a case of sibling rivalry there," she concluded. "He must have been the centre of attraction for quite a while."
"But I don't hate him for that," he retorted. "That idiot basically deserved it for even surviving. He even grew up sick."
"But you hated him because you and Ayesha was being sidelined," she told him. "Didn't you? And I'm guessing that you also didn't like him because he changed the dynamics of things. Suddenly, there's someone whom you cared about that didn't need protecting."
"Ayesha had her dad," he informed Raina. "And why would I hate him for not wanting to be protected? In fact, I should be grateful that he didn't need protecting. That's one thing less on my mind."
"But you still didn't like that feeling of uselessness right?" Raina persisted.
"Fine," he finally admitted. "I don't, ok? Jeez. And you called me bossy. That was borderline imposing."
"Just doing my job," she replied with a smirk. "Did you at least try to get along with him?"
"Tried," he informed. "It's common knowledge that I hate him. Especially after he spilt up the band."
"What?" Raina asked in surprise. All this while she had thought Kabir was the one who called it off.
"What?" Kabir questioned. "You thought I was the one who split the band?"
Raina nodded.
"I can't believe this," Kabir said as he threw his hand up in the air in disbelief. "Why would I do that?! You do know that I put the band together, right? Do you even do your research?"
"Of course I did!" Raina exclaimed. "But all the articles were blaming you for disbanding. How would I know what really went on behind the scenes? You said it yourself that the media painted a very negative picture on you."
Kabir took a deep breath. Looks like Raina also really needed a crash course on how the industry worked.
"Never mind," he told her. "That's not important. What's important is the band is gone and it's never coming back."
"Kyun? (Why?)" Raina asked. "If you loved the bands so much why did you let it split?"
"Arjun grew up," he replied. "That's what happened. He decided that the family's business was more important than what we had."
"While you chose your passion," she spoke his unsaid words.
"And I've been punished for it ever since," he told her. "I fought with my parents, moved out of the house; unknowingly dragging Ayesha and Sunny with me. I lost my girlfriend, one of my best friend, my sanity..."
"But you came out of all that," she comforted him. "And you're so much more stronger because of that. The scars will remain but the pain will go away. One day, you'll look back on all that and smile."
He gave her a genuine smile.
"What about you?" Kabir asked. "Will you also look back at all this and smile?"
"I hope so," she replied. "As torturous as it seemed."
"Torture?" Kabir said more than asked. "You call spending time with me torture? I'll have you know that there are millions of girls dying to spend time with me while I'm here, paying you to spend time with me."
"You're not paying me now," Raina retorted.
"But I did go shopping with you," he argued. "And I paid for all your stuff."
"Fair point," she noted.
"Of course," he said. "All is fair in love and war. So, back to the date. How does a day in Dr. Raina's life sound like?"
"Boring," she groaned.
"Seriously?" Kabir asked. "I thought you get to meet interesting people like me?"
"The job's great," she confessed. "Don't get me wrong. It's the life that's boring."
"Really?" Kabir urged. "Try me."
"Don't say I didn't warn you," she told him. He only smiled. "I wake up every day to my mom's Madonna... I mean, prayers. It's not bad, its just that my dad teases her with it and it got stuck. Then, I get ready for work while mom makes breakfast. Mom's breakfasts are the best! She makes the best aloo paratha and pancakes."
"Maybe you could bring some for me for our next session?" Kabir interjected.
"Maybe," she replied.
"So what happens after breakfast?" Kabir asked.
"After breakfast," she continued. "I go to work. I meet my patients, have my lunch, meet some more patients and then at the end of the day, I do the paperwork. Then I go home, have dinner with my family and then catch up on whatever work I've not done or watch a bit of TV and then go to bed."
"That doesn't sound boring," he told her. "That actually sounds normal."
"It must be boring compared to yours," she mumbled.
"No," he replied. "You'll be surprised how boring my life actually is, especially when I'm sober and out of a job."
"Really?" Raina asked, slightly shocked. "What do you do?"
"I thought you read my updates?" Kabir asked in return.
"Your updates barely tell me anything other than the fact you've not touch alcohol and you make very bad jokes," she replied. "Besides, I thought we were on a date."
"Fine," he sulked. "And my jokes are awesome. You just don't get them."
"Whatever," she brushed off. "So, Kabir, tell me, what's your day like?"
"If you must know," Kabir started. "I start my day with breakfast... Wait... Actually brunch. Then, I alternate between playing video games, lounging around, watching TV, gyming and working on my music. That's at least 6 hours to kill before anyone comes home. Ayesha's working at one of the boutique while Sunny's doing whatever he does. I'd never realize that I've actually got so much time to spare."
"Have you thought of helping out somewhere?" Raina asked.
"Like volunteering?" Kabir questioned.
"Yeah," she replied. "Like volunteering."
"Pagal ho kya?" (Are you mad?) Kabir questioned her sanity. "The media-walon would have a feast."
"Then use it to your advantage," she told him. "Use it to create awareness of something you're passionate about. I'm sure it'll also help you sleep better at night."
"And is that what you do on weekends?" Kabir asked.
"Sometimes," she replied. "So what's this big secret you're planning to tell me? If you're done with breakfast, shall we?"
Kabir looked down at his empty plate.
"Fine," he said reluctantly. "Let's go."

A/N: So, what do you think of Raina's backstory? Do you like it? I love the fact how Kabir managed to turn the tables and played the questioner.
