Chapter Sixteen

By six pm,Ella had showered and changed into a bumper jeans, black loose shirt with blue strap sandals. She didn't bother to use any make-up, since it was evening and she was not a fan of make up anyway.

Since it was just dinner night, which would last for only about an hour or so,Ella took only her phone and the house keys. When she stepped outside, she was surprised to see Jamal leaning against the wall, waiting for her.

It seemed as if he also showered, because he had exchanged his colourful shirt from earlier to another colourful one. Only that this one had a mix of baby pink and bright lemon. Somehow, the shirt, instead of looking so out of place on him, suited him better.

To sum it all up,he looked really handsome.

"Hey." He straightened as she locked the door.

"Hey,yourself." She replied as she shoved the keys into her back pocket. "Have you been waiting that long?"

"No." He shook his head. "You look different this evening."

Smooth change of subject. Ella mused.

"Different good or different bad?"

"Definitely good." He winked at her, which made her smile.

"We better go,then I guess." She started forward with him walking beside her.

"You didn't really tell me where you are from." He said, after some minutes of silence.

"Philadelphia. You?" Ella stepped aside for a lady with a pram to pass by.

"My mother is from Ireland, while my dad is from south Africa. But I prefer Ireland."

Ella gave him an amused look when they resumed their walk without another word. Ella busied herself with studying the people they walked past. Some of them had colour shirts on like Jamal, while others were wearing beach dresses.

Ella sighed in content. Her step faltered ,when she got to the edge of the Stilts, at the sight of the setting sun. The last rays casted an enchanting glow over the sea, making it look like a sea of fire, but a breathtaking sea of fire.

"Let's go or we would get the last seats." Jamal reached for her arm,but she pulled her arm away.

"Give me just a minute." She took out her phone and took quick pictures of the view. "Isn't it beautiful?"

"What?" He raised an eyebrow at the view, his expression clearly saying that he didn't see what she was seeing.

"Never mind. Let's go."

Ella took one last look at the view, before getting down the stilts onto the white powder sand. After much walking and searching, they finally spotted a seat with which was closer to the small stage that have been set up in their absence.

Each table had four seats each and every table, except theirs had four people seating down around it.

Ella didn't mind though. It felt good to seat at just observe the view rather than to be included in it. She basked in the laughter and conversations that was going on all around.

"You look content."

Ella turned to see Jamal staring at her with an unreadable look on his face. She shifted a bit under his gaze and shrugged but didn't answer.

"I see that you don't talk that much, can I interest you in a conversation?" He tried again.

"What do you want to talk about?" She decided to finally humor him.

"Anything you are willing to share."

"Okay." She pushed a strand of her hair out of her face. "As you already know,my name is Ella Milestone. I came from Philadelphia and I am an orphan. There."

An amused smile settled on his face. "That is all? I thought that you would tell me about your likes and such stuff. If that's all you are willing to share, then no problem. I would share mine with you.

My name is Jamal Avellene Johnston. I would be thirty years old next tomorrow. I have two brothers and one sister, all of whom are now happily married. My family stay in Ireland, while I stay in South Africa. I was born and brought up in Ireland but then,I had to leave since I didn't like it there. I think that's all. Or is there anything you want to ask?"

Ella was laughing by the time he finished. "Avellene? That sounds so girlish." She cracked up again.

He grinned at her. "Which is why I don't tell anyone that name. I like it when I am called Jamal. Sounds more male-ish."

"Yeah,right." She smiled.

A loud squeak came from the speakers, which made all conversation die down immediately. The beach became silent, except for the sound of the waves of course.

A woman dressed in a halter neck gown with nude heels came on to the stage holding a mic in her hand. In the silence, the enormous wooden bangles on her hands chinked together, creating disjointed sounds in the quiet.

All head turned towards her in speculation. Ella knew that everyone must be wondering who the red haired chick was,but Ella already knew.

Standing on the stage and surveying the crowd like a mama hen counting her chicks to make sure they were complete, was none other than Lejandra.

"Good evening ladies and gentlemen." A chorus of good evenings filled the air. "I welcome you all to Baa Atoll and most importantly, Reethi Beach. My name is Alejandra Mendoza. I would be one of your tour guides,so if you need anything, please don't hesitate to approach me or the other guides. You can also report to the reception building over there."

Every eyes, even though everyone knew where it was, followed the direction of her fingers. After they had their fill, all eyes settled on her again.

"If you check the booklet you were given, you would see the activities we planned out for your two weeks stay here. The reason why we made those arrangement is to make things more lively for everyone and please note that,it is optional. You might decide that you don't want to join in,I assure you that it's no problem. It's just to make things more lively," She paused. "If you don't have your booklets, then I suggest that you see the receptionist, that is if you are interested. Any one have any questions?"

"Yes." A voice rang out admist the crowd. "Why are we having this dinner? Is this like a welcome party?"

Several huffs and snorts filled the air at the stupid question. Ella turned her head to scan for the person who just spoke, but didn't have time to scan properly, when Alejandra began to speak.

"The reason why we organised this dinner is for you to meet people and socialise. You can also say that it is a welcome dinner. As I said earlier,if you check your booklets, then you would see all you need to know about Reethi Beach."

"Huh, How do we know where the tour guides stay?" Another person, a male this time, asked.

"The tour guides are always in the Villa 190 to 210,at night. If you need anything, come there. But in the day time,we are always everywhere. We would be wearing colourful shirts and dresses with the logo of Reethi Beach on it. Just like the one I'm wearing now."

Ella's gaze darted to Jamal's shirt, and sure enough, his shirt has the logo. She frowned at it,wondering why he didn't mention that he was a tour guide. To be a tour guide means that he had been here several times.

As if he sensed her gaze on him,he turned to her with a smile on his face a look of "Is everything alright" on his face.

Ella nodded, before turning her gaze to the stage. She didn't like liars, and Jamal just showed that he was the biggest one of all.

"If you have anymore questions, see the receptionist. Dinner would be severed shortly. Until then,Enjoy and relax. Once more,Welcome to Reethi Beach."

Claps and cheers filled the air as Lejandra walked off the stage. Music began to Blare from the speakers and soon the chattering resumed.

One guy clad in a white pristine suit came over to whisper something into Jamal's ear and left immediately.

Ella didn't bother to hide her disappointment when he pushed his chair and got up.

"Sorry,El,but I have to rain check." He gave her a sorry smile. "Don't wait for me,I don't know when I would be back."

Then he was gone.

Ella didn't realise that she was still staring at his back, until someone cleared their throat. She turned to see Alejandra settling into the chair that Jamal was sitting earlier.

"Hello,stranger."

"Hello you too." Ella replied with a genuine smile on her face. "I guess that explains the reason why I was seeing colourful shirts earlier."

"Now you know." Lea signalled to one of the men in pristine slacks and white shirts. "What would you have Ella?"

"Something delicious and satisfying."

"John, I would have Banana sponge cake and a cup of Mocha. The lady would have three burger with lots of cheese and Apple juice."

"Coming right up,ma'am."

Ella waited until the guy was out of ear short before grinning. "Ma'am? That makes you sound like an old woman. How old are you anyway?'

"Twenty-nine." Ella must have looked shocked, because Lea was laughing with tears streaming down her cheeks. "Just pulling your legs. I am eighteen."

"Wow." Was all Ella said before their food arrived.

She dug in immediately, not aware of the fact that she was really hungry. Half way through her third burger, she looked up to see Lea staring at her with an amused smirk on her face.

"What? Do I have sauce on my face?"

"Nope." Lea reached for her coffee cup and sipped from it. "For someone who looks slim, you really eat a whole lot."

Ella merely shrugged as she took a large swig of her Apple juice.

"Oh my cakes!" Lea suddenly sat up in her chair. "Hot guy in sleeveless shirt at ten o'clock."

"What? Where?" Ella started to turn around but Lea caught her arm before she could.

"Don't turn or he would know that we are staring." Lea hissed under her breath.

"Where is he?"

Lea seemed to freeze in her seat, making Ella's brow furrow. Torn between turning to see for herself and Watching Lea,she bit her lower lip.

"Where is he,Lea?" She tried again.

Lea started to open her mouth to answer but whoever it is she had been ogling spoke up first.

"Good evening Ladies. Mind if I join you?"

Ella felt herself go even more rigid than,Lea,who still looked as rigid as a pole.

Never in a million years did she think that she would hear it again,at least not too soon. To her horror,Heat flooded her veins and all the feelings she thought was dead surged to live. Her body became hot and cold all of a sudden.

There's no way he would be here. Last she heard,he was still in Philly, working in his company, Mckade Gadgets ,and whatever thing he was good at doing.

Berating herself for even thinking that he would be here and telling herself that she was only imagining it,she relaxed visibly, paste a bright smile on her face, then twisted around in her chair to greet the new guest.

The smile fell and whatever she was about to utter got stuck in her throat. Standing behind her and looking deliciously handsome in a dark blue sleeveless shirt, which showed off his biceps and muscular arms, looking also surprised as she felt, was none other than the last person she would have thought she would see here.

"Liam."
