Chapter Twelve
How carried away were they? That they didn't even notice someone walked in. Flynn took a moment to soak in the remarkable performance. She applauded gently.
"KEITH!!" Flynn called out with a subtle yet threatening voice.
They both turned around in shock, Athenaïs stood behind Keith, fastening her buttons and pulling down her skirt.
"Oh no... do not stop on my account, I was starting to enjoy the show," Flynn said with a terrifying smile.
Keith faces Flynn.
"What are you doing here?" he asked Flynn.
"You should be ashamed of yourself Keith!! Fucking your employee?" Flynn said to Keith.
"You're the one to talk..." Keith retorted.
Flynn faces Athenaïs.
"You!"
She attempts to physically attack Athenaïs but Keith stops her.
"I guess you were right, after all, you're not here just for the money... you're here to fuck my fiancé. Filthy slut! Shameless floozy!!" Flynn said to Athenaïs.
She attempts to hit Athenaïs again but Keith stopped her and tells her to leave. Athenaïs wept in utter humiliation.
Everyone at the office now knows she's been having an affair with Keith. How will she show her face at the office ever again?
Flynn shouted at the top of her voice, she might have as well used a microphone.
"This is how you intend to punish me? By screwing your employee?" Flynn said.
Keith glared at Flynn.
"Get out of my office, you're never welcomed here again... I'll be sure to inform security,"
She smiled fiendishly at Athenaïs.
"How does it feel? to be a tool... he's only sleeping with you to get to me!! Shameless floozy!!!"
Athenaïs looks at Keith with tears in her eyes, he shook his head in negation to Flynn's statement.
"If anyone here is a floozy, it's you Flynn... after fucking my brother; don't be a hypocrite,"
"It was years ago!! Get over it... we are getting married!!! I'm still your fiancé!!!"
"You and I both know it wasn't years ago, you both have been screwing around... you forget who I am!!"
"You're talking nonsense..." Flynn replied.
"On our engagement night... I knew you went over to his house, I found an ear of the diamond earrings I bought for you as an engagement gift... IN HIS BED!" Keith snapped back.
Flynn was taken by surprise and went speechless.
"Cat got your tongue? I have respected you and tolerated you. You know why I'm marrying you, it's to save your sorry ass of a family from financial wreckage!"
Flynn swung her palm across Keith's face.
"Don't you dare!! Talk about my family that way,"
Keith balls his fist to hold in his aggravation.
"The other day I came to your suite, I knew Martin was somewhere in there hiding... you think I'm that stupid, don't you?"
Flynn's eyes were full of hate and anger.
"I'll marry you... fulfill the promise I made to my late father but do not expect me to love you or treat you like I used to, the Keith that was in love with you is DEAD!" Keith said.
"You can go to hell with your love Keith!! You're going to pay for this... That's a promise;"
Keith laughs hysterically.
"Did Martin promise to save you?"
Flynn looks confused.
"I have more than enough shares to kick Martin out of this company without a cent to his name. If you both think you can screw me over... again? I'll love to see you try."
"This is not over Keith," Flynn said with a deathly stare.
She faces Athenaïs with a piercing gaze while Keith called security.
"And for you, slut... you better watch your back," Flynn said and left in a rage.
Athenaïs wished what happened was nothing but a bad dream, and a pinch will wake her from this nightmare.
But it wasn't a dream, now she has to face the music.
As though her face fell to the floor, the humiliating situation she found herself in felt unreal.
"Is that true?"
Athenaïs asked Keith.
"What do you mean?"
"Was all this... just to get to her?"
She couldn't stand one more minute around him, Athenaïs bolted away before he could utter another word.
Called Martha on her way out, everyone stared at her from the side of their eye as she walked by. Her hair was messy and she missed a button or two on her shirt.
Athenaïs was too devastated to care what people thought of her, the worst has already happened.
Athenaïs dunked herself in the bathtub, facing the ceiling with her eyes shut. Her thoughts drifted off to when she first met Keith.
How he worked his way into her heart, the beautiful moments, his touch; his kisses.
Funny how sweet memories could bring such heart-wrenching pain. She knew what she had to do.
She got out of the bath, and sent Keith a text, quitting her job. For real this time.
"How do you feel?" Martha asked her.
"I'll be fine..." she responded.
"You know you don't have to go back there..." Martha said.
Athenaïs smiled at her.
"I know..." Athenaïs replied.
Martha gave her a side hug.
"I'm stepping out for some groceries, you need anything? I won't be long..."
"Nah I'm fine..." Athenaïs replied.
Minutes after Martha left, Keith showed up. Athenaïs let him in. He took a seat.
They stare at each other, not saying a word.
"Why are you here?" Athenaïs breaks the silence.
"I got your message... and I completely understand,"
"Good! So you're here to tell me that,"
"No..."
"Then why? To play your wicked games with me again, knowing I'll take the bait,"
"Why will you say that, I-"
"You what?"
"Athenaïs I didn't mean for all this to happen,"
"All you've ever done is hurt me, Keith. I keep falling for your sick mind games!"
He stood up and squatted before her to make her gaze meet his.
"That's not true... I-"
"You what?"
"I love you Athenaïs,"
Athenaïs wasn't expecting those words from Keith, her heart fluttered to hear those words from his lips.
He repeated himself. In that sweet tender moment, he kissed her.
Underneath her breath she said.
"Then don't marry her..."
"But I have to... I made a promise,"
Athenaïs switched up.
"What do you mean?" She asked.
"You won't understand..."
"Wow! I'm so stupid... you say you love me but you have to marry someone else?"
"I know it sounds crazy..."
"No... this is another one of your stupid mind games again and I was nearly falling for it,"
"Not true..."
"Get out!"
Athenaïs shows Keith out of her house.
"I don't want to ever see you again!"
"I'll leave but before I go..."
Keith hands her a blank Cheque.
"I'm not going to convince you to come back to work for me and since you've decided to leave. I want you to have your dream career, the house is yours for life and the car too,"
Athenaïs stares at the blank cheque and then looks at Keith. Her anger builds up like a fan to flame.
"So a payoff?" Athenaïs asked.
"How can you say that? You prefer I let you go penniless?"
She ripped the paper to shreds in his presence.
"I hate you!" She said.
"Athenaïs..." he said in a soft hushed voice.
Athenaïs points to the door.
"Get out!" She said.
Without arguing, he left.
Athenaïs broke down in tears. Keith gets home and drowned himself in alcohol and insomnia hits.
He remembers how happy he was when he was with her. The first time he kissed her; the silly dalliance they've had in and out of the office.
Keith knew giving that up was stupid but he swore to his late father and that seemed to overpower the love he has for Athenaïs.
Finally admitting he was in love with her felt like a heavy burden was lifted off his shoulders but now he wished he never told her. He partly felt that was selfish of him to do so.
"Maybe I deserve this..." Keith said to himself as he swallowed half a glass of bourbon in one gulp.
The regret of confessing his feelings to Athenaïs was because he knew it hurt her but Keith couldn't hold it in any longer, no doubt he was fond of Athenaïs and somehow he felt that was the only chance he'll ever get to let her know how he felt.
Now he has to marry the woman he loathes. A woman that broke his heart and plunged him into a dimension of distrust and emotional unavailability and not to talk about sleeping with his younger brother no less.
But somehow Athenaïs brought him out of it. The magic was her; until he met Athenaïs; Keith felt all the women were with him for one selfish reason or the other or so he thought.
Even when he was not a charming gentleman. When he was a jerk.
Athenaïs still saw him in a beautiful light; it bewildered him, how someone could love him like that; when he was with her he felt extraordinary.
Keith stared blankly into thin air, his thoughts remained fixed on Athenaïs till the sun came up.
The following day, Keith put a call through to Flynn. Asked her out for coffee. She agrees.
In three hours they meet at a coffee shop. Keith was seated at a corner and Flynn takes a seat at his table.
"What is this about?" Flynn asked in a cold and distant demeanor.
He sipped on his beverage and said.
"I'm going to make this quick, we might not be in love but we can be civil with one another. I apologize for recent events; I'll inform you that Athenaïs is no longer with Diamond Ace, so I suggest we continue to plan our wedding, especially now that it's in a few weeks,"
Flynn's demeanor changed completely. Her countenance became sunny.
"That's good to hear..."
Keith nodded with no apparent reaction.
"And prepare, we are having dinner with my mother tomorrow evening, she demanded to see you ever since I told her you were in town," He said.
"It'll be nice to see her again," Flynn replied.
In a split second, Flynn forgot about the promise she made to Martin. Her hopes have been lifted now that Athenaïs is no longer in the picture.
Her initial intention to call off the wedding was distracted by her rage when she caught Keith in the arms of another woman.
In that fit of rage, she realized she wasn't ready to give up on Keith. She still had feelings for him even though she was cheating on him.
Her mission to win Keith's love was back in action.
The following evening, they're at his parent's house.
"Flynn my dear..." Keith's mum— Mary embraced Flynn as she saw her.
Keith's mum has always been fond of Flynn, Martin was also around and dinner was served.
They gathered at the dining hall to eat. It was clear that Martin was upset for some reason as he kept clanging his silverware on the plate like he was fighting someone in effigy using the filet mignon on his plate.
"Martin, do you mind? We are trying to have a quiet dinner here," Mary said.
Flynn glanced over at Martin, and Keith ate peacefully like nothing was going on.
Martin stood up and left the dining hall in fury. Keith smiled to himself and Flynn follows Martin.
"What's wrong with him?" Mary asked Keith.
In the passageway, Flynn stops Martin.
"Martin!" She called out his name.
He turned around.
Her fingers were twitchy and so was her voice.
"I know I told you I was going to end things with Keith but..."
"You're still going to marry him?" he interjected her statement.
The guilt in her eyes answered his question.
"WHY?" he asked hyperventilating.
Back at the dining hall, Mary urged Keith to go and see what was happening. Keith obeyed.
As he approached the passageway, he overhears Flynn and Martins' conversation.
"Why are you marrying him? He doesn't even love you!" Martin said.
"That's not for you to decide Martin, I want to be with your brother,"
"But you said you loved me... was that a lie?"
Flynn goes silent for a moment and Martin repeats the question but in a loud and angry tone.
Flynn responded accordingly.
"Maybe! Maybe it was a lie, I don't know!! But I know I'm not ready to give up on your brother, I'm marrying your brother and that's final!" Flynn berated.
Flynn responded and walked away from Martin and ran into Keith on her way back to the dining hall.
Martin left and Keith followed Flynn back to the dining hall.
After dinner, they all settled in the living room chatting.
Keith announced his intentions to leave and Mary took note of the awkwardness between him and Flynn.
They didn't even kiss goodbye. Not even a hug. Just "bye."
Keith left and Mary gave Flynn a little advice.
"Is something wrong between you and my son?"
Flynn scoffed.
"We had a huge fight... I'm afraid the spark we once had is gone, Mary,"
Mary observed Flynn's facial expression.
"I know this is none of my business but when was the last time you both did it,"
Flynn looks at Mary with her eyes wide open and laughed. They both laughed together.
"Mary..." Flynn teased.
"I may be over 60 years old but take it from me... sex will bring back that long-lost spark,"
"I wish... oh I wish, Keith and I haven't been intimate in years Mary, " Flynn said.
"You are going to be his wife, sex is already bound to happen, you need to remind him why he fell in love with you in the first place," Mary advised.
Flynn kept mute.
"Go to his house when he's at the office, he keeps a spare key under a false rock, our little secret... slip into something sexy or even nothing at all and wait for him on his bed... and tell him to dig in,"
Flynn laughs out loud, they both laughed over it.
Passed the night with Mary. All alone in the guest room, Flynn thought about what Mary had told her. And it made perfect sense, maybe if she could get Keith to sleep with her, he'd realize what he's been missing.
