The letters

It's the 5th of July, and I can hear the birds chirping loudly outside my window. I sit up and close my eyes before getting dressed and going downstairs to check the mail.

I get a letter from my family in England every week, so I figure I should check if it were here.
After all, it was either delivered today to tomorrow, as no one delivered post on Sundays.

The air is crisp, but warm from the heat of the sun. I open the mailbox and take out two letters, which is odd because I usually only get one. It's probably just scrap, but it has my name written on the front.

I step inside again, the heat following me in as I do.

I open the first letter.

Dear Sakata,

We miss you so much! Hayato is doing well, and we are too. We hope you're having fun in America with your friends! Make sure to send us a letter back soon,

Love, mom and dad.

I smile.
My parents usually sent letters because I used to love writing them and then sending them off to friends or relatives. When I left for school they thought it might be nice to feel that nostalgia of when we all were together.

I sigh and look and the letter in my other hand; opening it.

Dear Sakata,

I'm sorry for what I'm about to say, I don't want this to ruin our friendship.
This is embarrassing to admit, but I've liked you for quite some time now. I know you don't feel the same way, but I just had to tell you. I hope this doesn't makes things complicated.

Love, unknown.

I pause and put down the letter.

What?

Whoever it is, they know me.

Perhaps a friend?

No, I don't have many friends so it can't be one of them. Maybe a classmate?

I push the letter aside and think for a moment.
They said love at the end, didn't they?

I blush, a thought crossing my mind,

What if they're a girl?
