Chapter Six- The Beach

                  Rebecca's POV
Today, surprisingly, I didn't wake to screaming. The screaming started immediately after I woke up. I sighed, crawling out of bed.

"Why did you agree to this?! We shouldn't be going, especially not with that b****!" Alex yelled, pointing at me.
"Well, if that b**** doesn't behave, she's going to get a worse beating than she's ever had in her life." I slowly crept out, and then Alex and Trish looked at me.
"Listen up, you little w****. We're going to the beach for a lunch, and you're going to behave....or else." I nodded, fear building in my chest.
"May I.....May I bring a swimsuit, get in the water?" I whispered, and she nodded.
"Only because I don't want anyone to get suspicious of your.....privileges here." I nodded, quickly grabbing an apple, running back upstairs. I packed my swimsuit, sunscreen, and a towel, and stared at the picture of me and my dad. It was the same one he had as his phone background. A tear trickled down my cheek, remembering how I was planning to sneak out and see them tonight. Then, there was a pounding on my door.

"Hey, hurry up, brat! We leave in two minutes!" I quickly shoved my stuff in my backpack, sticking the picture in my pocket. We got there, and I quickly slipped into my bathing suit in the small room they had. I came back out, and Trish laughed at me.

"Wow. She looks even worse like that. So fat and ugly." I blinked back tears, and then saw a little boy running down the beach.

"Daddy, catch me!" He called, then, he ran into the water. I chuckled, but my eyes went wide with fear as he slipped and went under. I took off running, throwing my shoes. As I ran, I heard a strangely familiar voice calling for the boy.

"Jude! Hang on!" I dove in, streaking through the water towards him, and grabbed around his waist. Thank goodness he was really light. I resurfaced, moving back quickly towards the beach, but the boy wasn't moving.

"No. Come on, buddy. Come on." I lay him on the sand, gently pushing down on his stomach. A minute later, he puked up the water and started crying.

"Hey, it's okay. You're safe." He looked up at me, and I froze. My foster brother, Jude. Jude Smallbone. I stood, helping him stand, and pointed out Luke.

"Your dad's over there." I put my head down, quickly walking away, but heard him.
"Becki! Becki, come back! Becki!" I tried to shut out his cries, blinking back tears, but I couldn't. Tears blurred my vision, and I heard Luke also calling to me. Alex grabbed my arm, growling in my ear.

"You little b****. You knew they'd be here, didn't you? You tricked us." I shook my head frantically, looking for help. But the only people here were us, Luke, Jude, and a middle-aged man reading a book. Alex's hand slid to my throat, tightening slowly until I was clawing at it, struggling for breath. As I started to black out, I heard Luke's voice again.

"Let her go, now." Alex glared at him, his grip tightening further.
"And who do you think you are?" Somehow, I managed one last thing before I blacked out.
     "He's......my.....dad..." Then, everything went black.

              Luke's POV
Before Rebecca passed out, I heard her say one last thing.

"He's.....my....dad..." She managed, and then she blacked out. He dropped her to the ground, and sent a swift kick to her ribs. I knelt, gently picking her up, and moved back.

"Enough. The police are on their way. You're not keeping her after that." She had bruises on her arms, and some were already forming on her neck. She was also much too pale and thin, which scared me. Just then, I heard sirens, and he tried to bolt. He was quickly caught, and an officer said Courtney and I would have our rights to her back within two weeks. She stirred, and I gently lay her on the sand, kneeling beside her.

"Dad?" She whispered, and I nearly cried, smiling sadly.
"Hey, baby. You're safe now." She sat up slowly, wrapping her arms around my neck.
"I don't ever wanna leave you again." She whispered, and a couple tears trickled down my cheek as I returned the hug.

"I'm not ever going to let you go."
