*2* •She's Alive•

"Lexi! Dinner is ready!" Helen, Alexis's mom, hollered through the hall.

Alexis, who usually goes by Lexi, was looking at herself in a full length mirror. In her hand, a picture of her mom, Helen and her dad, Dylan.

She looked back herself. She didn't look like them. She didn't have anything that looked like them.

Her parents have straight hair, while she had curls. Her parents looked Caucasian, while she looked Hispanic. They had milkish skin tones, while Alexis had caramel colored skin.
They had blue and gray eyes, she had brown eyes. They had an all American voice, she had an Australian accent.

She was nothing like them. But, she looked down and saw a golden chain locket. She had it since birth. Inside was a picture of herself, when she was a baby. In someone else's arms. But, she didn't know who. Well, she knew it was her mom. She knew she was adopted.

She smiled and responded to her mother. "I'm coming!" She quickly hid her locket. Her parents didn't quite like that locket.

She entered the kitchen, where her parents were getting the table ready. She quickly washed her hand and sat down. Helen served her mash potatoes, baked chicken, and a small side salad. They all closed their eyes and began to say Grace.

Dylan, Alexis's dad, spoke quietly. "Dear heavenly father, thank you for this wonderful day and meal you have given us. Please Lord, bless us. And all the people said-"

"Amen," they said in unison and ate.

Alexis ate pretty quick, to go back and study herself in the mirror. Helen found that suspiciously. "Wow. You are pretty quick. Why is that?" Alexis bit her lip. She tried to find words, but at the same time not lie to her mother.

"Um, I'm just going to... My room." Dylan still are his food, looking down at his plate. But he asked anyways. "And what are you going to do in there."

Alexis thought. Was she really just going to her room to look at herself? She cancelled that plan and chose to listen to music. "I'm going to listen to my music and probably read."

Helen and Dylan nodded. Helen smiled. "Alright, Lexi. Have a good night."
Dylan and Helen kissed Alexis's forehead. Dylan smiled, "Good night, sweetie."

Alexis smiled and said good night. She got up and walked out the kitchen. She walked upstairs, carefully because it was dark. She went to her room and grabbed her red jersey and some shorts. It was her sleeping clothes.

She grabbed her iPod and plugged in her head phones and listened to her music. It was "The Lost Get Found" by Britt Nicole. Somehow, she felt a connection to that song.

Pretty soon, she fell asleep. Listing to that song over and over. She felt like she was lost, and someone was trying to find her.

--------------

"So, Moriah, have you and Joel written any songs together?" The reporter pointed her mic at Moriah.

Moriah smiled and shook her head. "No, not really. He's been a little busy writing, singing, and acting." The reporter nodded and used the mic. "When will you and Joel have kids?"

Moriah lost her smile. She looked down and pressed her lips together. "Joel and I have tried, once. Our little girl, Alexis. She was so beautiful and small. But, sadly, in my arms she-"

Moriah's voice cracked at that part. She began to cry, but quietly. Tears slowly went down her cheeks, but she didn't make a noise.

The reporter looked at her crew then back at Moriah. She gave sympathy look. "I am so sorry, Moriah. I didn't know, I'm very sorry."

Moriah wiped her tears, but didn't smile. "It's okay. I know you didn't know about her." The reporter pushed away the mic. "If you want, we can cancel this inter-"
Moriah sniffed and raised both her hands. "No, no. It's fine, I'm okay. Please, continue the interview."

The reporter gave a worried look, "Are you sure?"
Moriah nodded, wiping her last year. "Yeah."
The reporter nodded. "Okay. So, Moriah have you..."

The interview was a blur to Moriah. All she could think about was Alexis. She faked a smile through the interview.

-------------

A nurse turned down the volume to the television in the lunch room at the hospital.

Some nurses were on their lunch breaks. Including, Mrs. McKeon, the nurse who found Alexis alive. She watched the interview. She noticed Moriah.

She tapped on one of the nurse's shoulder. "Hey, can you turn the television up just a bit." The other nurse nodded, "Yes." She walked over to the television and turned it up.

It was at the part were Moriah talked about Alexis. The Mrs. McKeon leaned in a little, trying to remember.

Suddenly, like a flash of lightning, she remembers.

She's a miracle baby...

Those words repeated over and over in her head. She stood up quickly, her face flushed pale. Another nurse noticed. She ran to Mrs. McKeon frantically. "Are you Alright?" Mrs. McKeon shook her head fast and ran out the lunch room.

She ran through the hallways, passing rooms with open doors and people. She ran behind a counter, plopped her self on a chair and typed in the search box of the hospital's history, "Smallbone Peters, Moriah."

One name showed up. It was Moriah. She clicked on her name and it showed Moriah's information. She found her contact number and grabbed the hospital phone quickly.

-----------

Moriah finally finished the interview and was in the car with Joel. She got into the passenger seat and shut the door.

Joel smiled at her, waiting to see her smile. But, she didn't. Joel touched her hand. He spoke in a calm, smooth voice. "You okay?" Moriah let one tear go. "No, not really."

Joel hugged her. "What's wrong, love?" Moriah wiped her tear. "The reporter asked a question. And that reminded me of Alex-"

Moriah didn't have to say her name. Because, Joel's eyes were already starting to water up. Moriah sniffed, trying hard to be brave. But, it was no use. She cracked, and began to cry softly.

Joel leaned over and kissed her forehead. He kept whispering in her ear. "God has a purpose and reason for this. He will never challenge us with something we can't handle."

Moriah nodded, because she knew that was true.

Out of the silence, Moriah's phone rang. Joel slowly let her go and Moriah sniffed. She grabbed her phone and answered. "Hello?"

"Is this Moriah Peters?"
"Yes, and who is this?"
"This is nurse McKeon, from Hillcrest Hospital. I want to inform you that, fourteen years ago you had a daughter, Alexis Peters Smallbone?"

Moriah's eyes grew wide and she out the phone on speaker.
"Yes. She died in my arms."

"That's incorrect."
"What do you mean?"
"When you left the hospital, at exactly seven hours later, Alexis came back."

Joel and Moriah looked at each other.

"How is that possible? Why weren't we informed?!"
"Sadly, you and your husband left the continent, and we could not contact you."

Moriah's voice began to shake.
"So, what you mean is..."

There was a pause. Then, Mrs. McKeon broke the silence.

"What I'm trying to say is, your daughter Alexis Peters Smallbone, the one who died fourteen years ago, is alive."

Moriah and Joel went silent. Then the nurse repeated.

"She is alive."

Moriah broke into tears of joy. Joel did too, hugging Moriah and thanking God.

Moriah cried out, thanking God too.
"She's alive."

Their little girl is alive.
