*12* •Like There's No Tomorrow•
"It's gonna happen soon, Joel. Why can't we tell her?"
Luke asked Joel, for the third time this week.
Joel sighed.
"Luke, I don't know. But I just can't tell her now. It's not the right time."
Luke shook his head.
"Joel, please understand. It's going to happen, and soon."
Joel just sighed.
"I know. I just... I just can't right now."
Joel got up and walked out, leaving Luke on the bus. Joel couldn't tell Alexis now, because today was August 7.
Alexis's birthday.
Joel went up behind Moriah, he hugged her and smiled.
"Hello, Love."
Moriah smiled.
"Did you get the cake?"
Joel pressed his lips together and headed towards the SUV.
He hollered back at Moriah.
"I'll be back!"
Moriah giggled and waved as she fixed some lanterns.
"Have fun!"
Joel smiled as he thought of the party. Alexis was going to be fifteen years old, and she was going to have a quinceañera, since Moriah is Hispanic and thought it would be amazing if she had a quinceañera.
Joel parked, and grabbed his wallet and headed to the bakery.
--------------
"It was like yesterday you were just fourteen years old."
Joel said as he spinned Alexis.
It was the father-daughter dance, the song "No Crezcas Mas" by Tercer Cielo played.
Alexis smiled and looked down. Her dress, a golden dress with orange beads at her waist. She had a crown of lights, white and gold lights. She had curls, and natural make up.
She was stunning.
Alexis giggled.
"That was yesterday. I'm fifteen today."
Joel laughed as Alexis swayed.
"My little girl is growing up."
Alexis smiled and hugged her father.
"I'll always be your little girl."
Joel and Alexis parted, Joel was crying.
Alexis put her hands on her hips and smirked.
"Are you crying?"
Joel wiped his tears and smiled.
"No."
Alexis lifted an eyebrow and kept her smirk.
"You're crying."
Joel sniffed.
"No, I'm not."
Alexis shook her head.
"Then why are you crying?"
Joel pressed his lips together and wiped another tear.
"I have something in my eye."
Alexis gave him a strange look.
"In both of them?"
"Yes," Joel quickly responded.
Alexis laughed, and they returned to their dance.
Moriah looked from aside. She was there, but she was tried. She sat down, she was fatigue.
She smiled at Joel and Alexis.
There's not much time.
Moriah lost her smile. Those words repeated in her head. She just couldn't get rid of them.
Her eyes stung with tears.
Courtney noticed.
"Moriah? Are you alright?"
Moriah shook her head and got up.
"I need to be be alone. Excuse me."
Moriah quickly got up, and ran out the large white tent, where Alexis had her party.
Luke noticed and went to go see what's wrong.
Luke lifted up the cover and stepped outside. He looked to his left, but heard sobbing on the other side. He looked to his right, there Moriah stood, covering her face with her hands and crying.
Luke walked towards her as fast as he could.
"Moriah? What's wrong?"
Moriah sobbed back, ignoring Luke's question.
"Please tell me Moriah. You can trust me."
Moriah gasped for air and finally spoke.
"I can't take it."
Luke looked confused. Moriah kept sobbing. Luke remembered.
"Why can't you just tell Alexis?"
Moriah shrugged, wiping some tears with her sleeve.
"I wish I could, but she's so young and happy. I don't want to take that away from her."
Luke hugged Moriah. She felt a little better, but still not. Luke parted and looked at her.
"I understand. I didn't want to tell Courtney the news when I was diagnosed and it could have cost my life. I didn't want her to worry. But, I had to. And although she began to cry and asked me to not leave, we made it through, together."
Moriah looked at the ground and shook her head.
"I don't know. I wish I could, I really do. But-"
Luke interrupted her.
"It's okay, Moriah. I know you can't tell her now."
Moriah nodded, her heartbreaking.
"Thank you, Luke."
Luke smiled sadly and hugged Moriah.
Moriah parted and Luke left her alone, since Moriah wanted to be alone.
Moriah held her hands to her mouth, thinking.
Her phone vibrated. She pulled it out and turned it on. The screen glowed in the dark.
It was a message from Dr. Johnson.
Dr. Johnson:
I got the results back. You don't have much time.
Moriah began to cry, she dropped her phone on the ground. She slid to the ground and cried.
Those words were now in her head. It would be impossible to forget them.
She sniffed, she just couldn't believe it.
She whispered through her tears.
"God, please help me."
Somehow, she felt a warm hug. She didn't feel alone anymore.
She got up, wiped the tracks of her tears, and faked a smile through out the party.
Alexis tugged on her hand to come and join her and Joel.
Moriah gave in, and joined.
Moriah eventually told Joel while Alexis went to get something to drink. Joel lost the light in his eyes.
Moriah looked down, tears threatened to come.
Joel touched her chin.
"We are going to make it through this. I will love you and Alexis dearly."
Joel and Moriah turned around as they heard Alexis laugh with Rayne and Madi.
Joel kissed Moriah's forehead and embraced her. He whispered into her ear softly.
"Like there's no tomorrow."
