Twentieth Chapter - Workplace Chaos

The morning sun spilled through the massive glass windows of Valerie Designs, bathing the sleek interiors in golden light. Designers flitted around like bees in a hive, holding fabric swatches and clipboards, all while exchanging quick snippets of chatter about the latest project deadlines.

Sara walked into the bustling office, a paper cup of coffee in one hand and her tote bag slung haphazardly over her shoulder. Her hair was tied into a messy bun, and her navy blazer hung slightly askew. She was a walking paradox—chaotic yet brilliant.
Ohayō gozaimasu!” she called out as she strolled past her coworkers.

Aiko, her closest work friend, peeked up from behind her desk. “Sara, don’t tell me you were late because of coffee again?”
Sara grinned. “Not just coffee—spilled coffee. The universe decided my white blouse needed an abstract caffeine print.”
“Of course,” Aiko deadpanned. “You’re a walking disaster.”
“Correction: a walking, talented disaster.”

The office buzzed with energy as Sara joined the team preparing for a crucial presentation with Kōmei Boutique, one of Japan’s top fashion houses.

As Sara settled in, her manager, Ms. Haruka Ito, appeared. A statuesque woman in her late 30s, Haruka was known for her impeccable style and unflinching demeanor.
“Sara,” Haruka began, tapping her tablet, “I assume you’ve finalized the presentation for the Kōmei Boutique pitch?”
Sara nodded. “Of course! It’s all ready to dazzle their socks off.”
Haruka arched a brow. “Dazzle their socks off? They’re one of Japan’s most prestigious fashion houses. Let’s aim for awe, shall we?”
“Trust me, Haruka-san. I’ve got this,” Sara replied confidently.

An hour later, Sara sat at the head of the conference room table, her laptop connected to the massive screen. Around her, the team was in high spirits, buzzing with anticipation. This presentation could secure Valerie Designs a coveted partnership.

Ito, the team’s no-nonsense manager, paced at the back of the room, her tablet in hand. “Sara,” she said, her tone clipped, “you’ve reviewed the slides, right? Everything’s perfect?”
“Perfect,” Sara replied with a grin.
“Good. Because if anything goes wrong—”
“Relax, Haruka-san. Trust me, I’ve got this.”

Haruka’s eyebrow twitched, but she said nothing, while Sara booted up the presentation. The opening slides were flawless, showcasing designs inspired by wabi-sabi, the Japanese aesthetic of finding beauty in imperfection.
The Kōmei representatives on the video call nodded in quiet appreciation, their expressions calm but attentive.

Sara clicked to the next slide, her confidence soaring—until the screen lit up with chaos.
Instead of the next design, a cartoonish kimono popped up: vibrant colors, sparkles, and cats playing shamisen. The room fell silent.

Aiko leaned over and whispered, “Sara, what is that?”
Sara froze. “Um…this is…uh…”
The next slide appeared—a doodle of a frog wearing sunglasses and sipping matcha, with the caption: Frog Goals: Matcha Always.
A junior designer stifled a laugh. “Oh my god, is that…a mascot idea?”

One of the Kōmei reps tilted his head. “This is...unexpected.”
Haruka pinched the bridge of her nose. “Kami-sama, tasukete…” she muttered under her breath.
“I can explain!” Sara blurted, raising her hands. “This is…uh…a sneak peek of our experimental line! Yes, we wanted to gauge your reaction to something playful before diving into the main concept.”

The Kōmei reps exchanged glances, intrigued despite themselves. “Interesting approach,” one of them said.
Haruka’s eyes widened. “Sara, what are you doing?” she hissed under her breath.

Sara ignored her and quickly clicked back to the main folder. “Now, if you’ll allow me, let’s get to the actual designs we’ve prepared.”

As she resumed the proper presentation, her passion and confidence began to shine. She spoke about the intricacies of the designs, tying traditional Japanese aesthetics to modern fashion trends.

“Each piece tells a story,” she explained. “It’s not just clothing; it’s art that speaks to the soul.”
By the end of the presentation, the Kōmei reps were nodding in approval.

“This is impressive,” one of them said. “Your team’s creativity is…unmatched.”

Haruka exhaled audibly, a mix of relief and exhaustion, while Sara leaned back in her chair, a triumphant grin on her face.
Back at her desk, Sara found herself surrounded by coworkers.
“That was legendary,” said Kenji, a junior designer.

“I’m calling it now,” added Naomi, another designer. “The Frog Slide will go down in Valerie history.”
Aiko smirked. “It’s amazing how you can mess up so spectacularly and still come out on top.”
“It’s a gift,” Sara replied, tossing her hair dramatically.
Kenji laughed. “Seriously, though, how do you stay so calm during a crisis?”

Sara shrugged. “What’s the point of panicking? Shikata ga nai, right? It is what it is.”
Naomi nodded. “I don’t know whether to admire you or be terrified of working with you.”
“Both,” Sara said, grinning.
As lunchtime rolled around, the break room was abuzz with laughter as the team recounted the morning’s events.

“Did you see Haruka’s face during the frog slide?” Kenji asked, cracking up.

“She looked like she wanted to commit seppuku,” Aiko said, barely containing her laughter.
“Haruka-san’s always so calm,” Naomi added. “Leave it to Sara to push her to the brink.”

“Hey!” Sara protested. “It all worked out in the end, didn’t it?”
Aiko rolled her eyes. “Only because you’re ridiculously good at what you do.”

“And because I’m charming,” Sara added, lifting her coffee mug in a mock toast.
Kenji snorted. “Sure, let’s go with that.”

As the workday came to a close, Sara leaned back in her chair, a satisfied smile on her face. Despite the chaos, she knew she’d done her job well.

“Hey, Aiko,” she called out. “Do you think I’m too…chaotic?”
Aiko looked up from her desk. “You? Chaotic? Nah. You’re just…special.”

Sara laughed. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”

And with that, she headed home, ready to tackle whatever chaos awaited her tomorrow.
