sofia's pov +

"i'm sorry that jack bailed on you last night" kenzie apologised as we walked down the school hallways to first period.

"actually, he made it up to me" i let out a growing smile.

"oh my gosh, ew, ew, no!" she got the wrong idea and quickly covered her ears. i laughed and pulled them down.

"no, not like that" i corrected. "he projected a movie onto the wall on south wallace and bought the pizza to me instead".

kenzie obtained a confused look, "jack did that? my brother?".

"yeah" i nodded, smiling back to last night and how much of a surprise it all still was.

"woah, what was that?".

"what was what?" i recalled.

"that smile that you just did" she released a small chuckle. "don't tell me you actually like him".

i ran my fingers through my hair, shrugging my shoulders, "okay, don't get ahead of yourself kenz. i told you that we're just friends and remember i don't—".

"do boyfriends, yeah i know" kenzie continued as we reached our gym class. "but with the way you're acting it seems like jack will be an exception".

i scoffed, "your brother doesn't know a thing about being in a relationship. he was a little off with me this morning anyways".

i pursed my lips at the thought, but it was definitely my fault for being too invasive about his dad.

"hey, don't read too much into it. he's like a ticking time bomb sometimes" kenzie informed. i nodded, brushing it off before we headed to the locker rooms.

jack's pov +

my phone vibrated in my hand with a text message. i sat in johnson's living room with him and sam, watching one of the fast and furious films that happened to be on tv.

"who's that?" johnson questioned.

"just sofia" i locked my phone again. "asking if i wanna hang out".

"what's going on with you two anyways? you guys seem really close now" he handed me the small bags of weed to start rolling.

"yeah but it's nothing serious"  i shrugged, before sam emitted a loud laugh at my confession.

"do you not recall what you did for her birthday yesterday?" he said with a mocking grin. "that rom-com shit seals the deal for girls like her".

"girls like her?" i frowned, adding the green fragments to the filter paper.

"he's talking about hood girls. you know, girls who have never been given any better" johnson explained to me.

"nah. you don't know what you're talking about" i said.

i rested my arm on the top of the couch to disregard them. these two are always speaking some sort of bullshit any ways.

"listen, does she always hang by your side now, check if you've eaten, fold your clothes, stay over for more than half the week, help you out all the time?" sam listed.

"yeah".

"wow, you're in there deep, man!" sam exclaimed, finding so much amusement in this topic alongside johnson. "i'd run while you still can, g".

i laughed at his rapid conclusion, "sofia is not like other girls. she's feisty, independent and doesn't do boyfriends. we're just friends and she's well aware of that".

"is she though?" sam inquired me with a cocked brow that i rolled my eyes at.

"sam is just running his mouth as usual" johnson disagreed. "i'd say enjoy it all while it lasts".

with a shrug, i finally lit up the joint, "don't get me wrong, the sex is unbelievable but maybe sam's right. i don't need a clingy fuck buddy".

johnson furrowed his eyebrows, laughing at my words as if i were joking.

"seriously?" he recalled when i didn't laugh with him. "dude, i think chanel messed you up".

"what's that supposed to mean?" i defensively retorted.

johnson sighed, turning to face me more on the couch.

"okay, i'm not trying to go all love story on you but from day one you were attracted to sofia. you went the extra mile to get her to fuck you and you've spent almost everyday with her for the past few months" he explained.

wondering where he was going with this, i let him continue.

"you kiss, you flirt, you give her birthday gifts and you do all the shit that points out in big letters that you could like her, and now she's just a clingy fuck buddy?" johnson added. "dude, i'm not blind. you just don't want to look stupid again".

i handed sam the blunt, focusing back on the movie and refusing to take a moment to process what was just said.

quiet fell upon us all after johnson's little evaluation, and it was obvious that sam was finding it awkward from the face that he was pulling.

"nah, johnson doesn't know what he's talking about" he interrupted the silence with a big pat on my back.

i nodded thankfully at him being on my side.

"but you do give her oral and no guy we know does that unless they're really into a girl" sam carried on.

"see!" johnson exclaimed.

"i'm really going to stop telling you two shit" i muttered, picking up my beer for a sip.

"but i still say get out of there" sam reminded me, making johnson roll his eyes at their contradicting opinions.

when i arrived back home, i went straight for my bedroom and lay back on my bed after all the chinese we had to soothe our munchies.

a knock on my door followed by someone entering. i sat back up as sofia came in with a brief smile.

"hey" she closed the door behind her and stayed put against the wall beside it.

"hey" i replied. "miss anything at school today?".

she narrowed her eyebrows in confusion.

"not school work" i corrected with a chuckle and she did the same, shaking her head.

"nope".

i nodded then getting my packet of marlboros from my pocket. i took a cigarette out and chucked the packet on the bed, before standing by the open window to light it up.

where my packet landed, i noticed a few clean clothes folded neatly in a pile. releasing the first cloud of smoke, i gestured at them.

"who did the laundry?" i asked.

"uh, kenzie and i did" sofia answered.

i snickered lightly, "kenzie folded my clothes?".

"no, i did that actually. she refused to touch your underwear".

sofia emitted a small laugh whereas i quickly thought back to sam's words from earlier.

"look, i'm sorry for being so stubborn this morning" she spoke up in the silence. "i just know how it feels to have both parents not care about you. to have one, that's great but two, you're pretty fucking lucky".

"but that letter i wrote for my dad was just to let my thoughts out. nothing more" i told her, holding the cigarette outside the window.

"i get that" sofia nodded, then cautiously bit her lip. "so, do you wanna stay up and watch family guy downstairs tonight?".

"i can't. i have school work to catch up on".

"it's friday?".

i shrugged, looking at the touchy frown that she had on her face.

"just better to get it done early. y'know for summer school" i told.

sofia pushed herself off the wall, "okay, well kenz and i will be down there if you wanna join".

she opened the bedroom door to leave but i called out her name before she could.

"yeah?".

"with us or whatever it is that we're doing, we're on the same page right?".

combing her fingers through her curls, she shrugged, "meaning?".

"that we're just messing around, sof".

she pursed her lips, taking a few seconds longer to reply than i thought she would.

"yeah" sofia chuckled. "why? you thought that just because we fuck, sleep in the same bed, hang out all the time, we're suddenly ghetto married?".

"no, it's just with how you—".

seeing her defensive brown eyes transform into softer ones, i held back from elaborating since i didn't want to upset her.

"you know what? nevermind" i continued.

"okay" she brushed off. i handed out the rest of my cigarette and sofia came beside me to pull in the smoke and release.

"so ghetto married, huh?" with a smirk, i cast back to her earlier reference.

she rolled her eyes with a laugh beneath them, "don't get any ideas, jack".
