Epilogue
A/N: Here it is :) I'll definitely miss Ollie and Haruto. While Love, on Read is quite a mess of a story, so is Ollie LOL. One day, I may try to revise it/rework it, but I'm still proud of finishing this story. No promises, but I may post a few extra scenes, snippets, etc., for Inksgiving, etc. later. Thanks for reading this chaotically written story. <3
Ollie's POV
"Is the tie okay?" I stood in the middle of the hotel room, waiting for Haruto to stop messing with his hair. Even though I was sure it'd be fine, he was still trying to comb it to perfection. He turned around with a grin. Wordlessly, he crossed the room, adjusted the tie for me, and kissed my forehead.
"Now, it's fine."
"Good."
"Still nervous?"
I sighed. "Of course I am. I don't know why they agreed to have me speak at the wedding. I'm shit with crowds."
He laughed before wrapping his arms around me. "You'll do great. You rehearsed it on the plane for hours and in the airport. And last night after dinner and—"
"Okay, okay," I interrupted. "I get it; I just don't want to mess it up."
He hummed, reaching behind me to grab the rental car keys. "If it makes you feel better, we can rehearse it in the car ride there."
"Yes, please." We parted from the hug, wordlessly checking the hotel for the essentials we'd need for the wedding, making sure I didn't forget the hotel room key like last time, and heading out the door.
The friendly valet people in the lobby pulled up to the curb with our car, sending Haruto the same hand sign as Mahealani demonstrated when we first met. A shaka, as the locals called it. I didn't try to mimic the gesture, but Haruto did effortlessly before retrieving the car keys from the man.
Haruto punched a destination into the GPS, but I quickly realized that this wasn't the place of the venue. "Where are we headed?"
He smirked. "Figured we could go sightseeing beforehand. Take a few photos before we get there."
"Oh, okay." I had wondered why we left the hotel early, but I figured that Hawai'i traffic was utterly different from California's. "Where's this at?"
He handed me his phone, which had the destination opened on Google. Pali Lookout. Haruto started the car, took the exit onto the main road, and said, "it's a historical lookout with amazing views. It's fairly windy, so I brought a travel-sized gel for the hair."
It looked absolutely stunning as I flipped through the photos on his phone. With an expansive view overlooking a cliff with the Pacific Ocean in the back, I could only imagine that the images wouldn't do it justice.
And after a thirty-minute drive, Haruto pulled into the moderately full parking lot. The wind was already strong as we got out of the car, our suits making noise as we headed up the slope to the lookout point. Tourists and locals congregated toward the concrete railing, giant signs with historical information posted nearby.
The photos really didn't do it justice. The mountains were a rich and diverse array of green, lush, with ferns and trees that extended into the sky, the mountain tops piercing the clouds above us. And as we got near the actual observation area, it was truly spectacular. The ocean was a deep blue, easily outshining the California coastline I was used to.
"Crazy, right?" Haruto asked. He held up his phone and took a few panorama photos before motioning for us to take a couple of selfies. I was still awkward with pictures, but his smile was contagious, and it was easy to be relaxed in a photo with Haruto.
We spent a good third to forty minutes admiring the sight, reading through the infographic signs. If it weren't for the suit and ties, I would've forgotten about the wedding and let Haruto drive around the island to all the sightseeing places, even though we agreed to do all the touristy things tomorrow.
"We should head out, or we're going to be late for the wedding," I pointed out, shielding my eyes from the sun starting to peak out from the clouds. "We're supposed to be there early for the official photos too."
"Aw," an older lady cooed from behind us. "I'm so sorry to eavesdrop but are you two gentlemen getting married?"
Her husband nudged her side before sparing us an apologetic glance. "Sorry."
Haruto waved his hand between them. "Oh, no. We're attending a friend's wedding."
She pursed her lips. "Maybe one day?"
My cheeks flushed as her husband scolded her. "Beth, leave them alone."
Haruto laughed. "Maybe."
It was my turn to look at Haruto like he had lost a head. "Maybe?"
He grinned as Beth just about melted. "There are some charming wedding spots up on the North Shore. I grew up on this side of the island, but up north's got some beautiful views too."
"Thank you," Haruto said. "I'll definitely have to look into it."
Beth's husband apologized again before ushering her away.
"One day?" I looked at him, aware that my cheeks felt incredibly warm even with the cool trade winds.
Haruto wrapped his arms around me. "Don't worry your overthinking little head about it. We've got a wedding to go to, remember?"
I hummed, still wanting to interrogate him further but being wrapped in his arms was a distraction enough. "Fine. But don't think I won't ask you later."
"Alright," he digressed. "Besides, you probably want to rehearse your speech before it starts.
"Shit," the curse slipped. "Let's go."
—
By the time we arrived at Kualoa Ranch, I was certain Haruto already knew my speech like the back of his hand. Even after sneaking photos of the scenic drive on the eastern side of the island between rehearsing, I was still nervous about messing up my speech.
But those nerves subsided once I saw them, already in their matching white jumpsuits and dress.
"You look so good!" Courtney exclaimed, practically dragging her soon-to-be wife towards us. Mahealani nearly tripped in her white heels but recovered and approached us with her arms outstretched.
"Likewise," I commented before finding myself crushed in the girls' embrace. "Hope we aren't too late."
"No, most of Mahealani's family is running late. Hawai'i time, as she calls it."
"Traffic," Mahealani said. "The H2 is a mess, but they'll definitely amp the party up."
Courtney laughed. "She's the black sheep for being introverted in a family of extreme extroverts. You thought I was an extrovert; just wait till you see her aunts and siblings."
"My dad's side is like that," Haruto chimed in. "Especially the uncles."
Mahealani nodded before throwing a thumb over her shoulder. "Let's get you two situated, shall we? There's still some time, but the appetizers are up for grabs even before the ceremony if you'd like to sneak some in now while they're fresh."
"Yes, I'm starved," I said. "And we need to get some pictures."
Courtney looked towards the larger building. "I'll ask our photographer. He knows all the best places on the ranch to catch a photo. We took a couple up the hill that looks great with the lighting."
We followed the girls inside, finding our table next to their table for two and the food table, which I'd have to thank them for.
—
The speech went swimmingly, and despite the awkward laugh when I joked about third-wheeling their relationship for most of our college years, both Mahealani and Courtney's family all enjoyed it. The ceremony and traditional Hula dance that Mahealani surprised Courtney with all had us tearing up at some point.
It was a fantastic ceremony and reception with plenty of delicious food and alcoholic beverages that I made sure to wash down with water and juice. Haruto led most of our conversations with their friends and family, often discussing the local coffee farms on the North Shore that Mahealani's family recommended. It was definitely going on our list of places to check out.
By the time the reception ended, it was well past ten and nearly eleven by the time we returned to our hotel. While exhausted from all the obligatory dancing and mingling with Mahealani's very party-people family, I think the wine, delicious food, and excellent company were an adrenaline rush. Haruto and I continued our little DJ session in the hotel room, blasting some of his favorite Kpop songs (mostly Wonho) and a blend of Olivia Rodrigo and Conan Gray. Of course, the music was kept on low, but that didn't stop us from lip-syncing our hearts out until we finally wore ourselves out by two in the morning.
—
I stared at the screen, letting those words and pictures of us at their wedding yesterday and at the Pali Lookout sink in.
In a relationship. Today.
Except, the date was technically wrong; we were just publicly announcing today that Haruto and I were officially boyfriends. That's right, I said it. Boyfriends.
It was surreal even thinking about it in my head. Though we've been boyfriends to the girls and Haruto's coworkers for a while, we kept it low-key and kept calling it dating. Which would've been weird to differentiate, especially at a wedding like today, but saying the word boyfriend just didn't feel quite right until recently.
Now, it felt normal to hold hands, kiss, and do everything that boyfriends do. Introducing him to people as my boyfriend would take some time to get used to, but that word was no longer a scary thing to even dream of.
My phone erupted with notifications within minutes as I turned it on.
Harvey: congrats! P.s. Hope he's a better kisser than I was ;)
Janice: Congratulations!
Miyoung: best wishes to you both <3
Even Lauren and old friends from drama classes and old student council members commented their congratulations.
Haruto's family showed their support through gifs and emojis, his mother texting him and gushing about the picture. My mom and her boyfriend commented on the post a few moments later.
Anna: When's the wedding? You better bring him and his family over for the holidays. And he better like watching Hallmark movies.
My mom's boyfriend had a more emotional response.
Brian: They grow up so fast :( Look at how adorablleeee.
Courtney: Called it first.
And underneath it, Mahealani, Janice, and even Herb commented that they had called it first. I bit back a smile, resisting the urge that Herb was the first one I had announced it to (when I had awkwardly tried to sneak Haruto up to my apartment). Janice and Miyoung were next since they were both there when Haruto started putting boyfriend on the coffee cups following our discussion.
After glancing at the message war of who had called our relationship first between the girls, Herb, and Haruto's coworkers, I spotted one more message, almost doing a triple take.
Comments from Benjamin and Mason themselves. My thumb hovered over the notification, but curiosity took over.
Both liked the post, with a quick congratulations. While tempting to ignore it or even delete the message, it wasn't worth the stress or energy. Instead, I liked their comments and set the phone down.
Haruto stirred next to me at the sound of my phone. He blinked lazily just as the early morning sun rays peeked through the hotel curtains. "You're up? Everything alright?"
I hummed before placing a kiss against his nose, effectively waking him up. "More than alright. Shall we go sightseeing, boyfriend?"
He nodded, finding my hand underneath the sheets still. "And take all sorts of boyfriend photos?"
"Yes."
"Perfect," he said with a smirk. "But coffee first."
I grinned. "Coffee first."
