Part 15
~Free's POV~
I was driving home, my mind heavy with thoughts. Y/n's baby shower had been postponed to next week due to some hospital work she got caught up in, and Mom had gone to meet her friends. Being a doctor isn't easy. I wondered how Dalny was feeling. She tries to hide it, but I know she's in pain. I've seen it in her eyes, the sadness she keeps bottled up. I need to do something—I can't bear to see her like this. My thoughts were abruptly interrupted when a child suddenly appeared in front of my car. Thank God I slammed the brakes in time.
I quickly got out of the car and saw a little boy, no older than five. His clothes were worn and tattered, and he was crying, clearly scared.
Free: Hey! Are you okay?
He nodded slowly, looking up at me with wide, frightened eyes.
Free: Don't be scared. I won't scold you, dear. What's your name?
Daniel: D-Daniel...
He was clutching his leg, and I noticed he was injured.
Free: Oh my—let's get you to a hospital.
Daniel: N-No...I-I'm hungry, Uncle...
Free: Where do you live? Do you remember your parents' phone number? I can call them—
Daniel: I live on the s-streets...Please, just give me food.
A shiver ran down my spine as I looked at him. His vulnerable state brought tears to my eyes.
Free: Come with me, dear. I'll give you lots of food.
He agreed, and I took him with me.
~End of POV~
Dalny answered the door as the bell rang, frowning slightly when she saw Free standing there with a child in his arms.
Dalny: Who is he?
Free: I'll explain later. He's hungry. Can you arrange some dinner for him?
Dalny: Yeah, sure.
Dalny quickly prepared a meal, and the boy devoured it eagerly.
Daniel: Thank you, Aunty. It's sooo tasty.
Dalny smiled at him warmly.
Dalny: Eat as much as you want.
As Daniel continued eating, Free explained everything to Dalny. She listened, her expression softening with sympathy.
Dalny: Oh my... Poor thing.
Free: I felt so bad for him, I couldn't just leave him out there.
Dalny: You did the right thing, Free.
They both watched Daniel as he finished his meal.
Free: I've called Shu. He'll investigate to see if we can find out who his parents are. In the meantime, let's keep him here.
Dalny: Yeah, it's already late. Daniel, let's get you some fresh clothes and bandage that wound.
~A Week Later~
Days passed, and in that time, Free had grown deeply attached to Daniel. Shu had found out that Daniel's parents were dead, leaving him an orphan. Everyone suggested sending him to an orphanage, but Free wasn't ready to let him go. He kept making excuses, delaying the inevitable. Daniel, too, had become attached to Free and didn't want to leave.
One day, Shu entered Free's office to discuss the situation.
Shu: Brother, I need to talk to you about Daniel.
Free: What about him?
Shu: You've been acting differently since he arrived. You're not letting him go. I know you're attached to him, but how will you cope when the time comes?
Free: Shu... To be honest, I don't want to let him go. I want to give him the love and care he deserves.
Free's voice trembled with emotion as he expressed his feelings.
Shu: But you know you can't keep him with you forever, right?
Free: I know...
Free's head hung low, the weight of the situation pressing down on him.
Shu: Brother... You and Dalny can't have children of your own. What if you adopt him? That way, you and Dalny would have a child, and Daniel would have parents.
Free: That's... That's a great idea, Shu! Thank you so much!
Shu smiled, relieved to see his brother genuinely happy. Shu had also lost a child of his own, but he had stayed strong for everyone. Now, Free had a chance to fulfill a dream that had once seemed out of reach.
Free: I'll talk to Dalny about this.
Shu: Let me know when you need the adoption papers. I'll help you with that.
With that, Shu left the room, leaving Free with renewed hope.
~Time Skip~
Free entered the room and found Dalny gently tucking Daniel into bed. He watched them quietly, noting the tenderness in Dalny's expression—a tenderness he hadn't seen in a long time. Maybe she felt the same way he did about Daniel. Maybe she would agree to adopt him, to give him the home he deserved. Once Daniel was fast asleep, Free approached Dalny.
Free: Dalny, I want to talk to you.
Dalny: Hmm? What is it?
Free: I've been thinking a lot about Daniel... about what he's been through and how he's already become a part of our lives. He needs a parent's love, and I can see how much you care for him, Dalny. I was wondering... How about we adopt him?
Dalny's expression hardened immediately. She straightened up, crossing her arms defensively.
Dalny: What?
Free: He needs a family, Dalny. We could give him that. He's already here with us, and he feels safe and loved. I know you've been through a lot, but this could be a chance for us to heal, to care for someone who needs us.
Dalny: I'm not adopting a street child. I've already lost my own baby, and you think a random kid from the streets can just replace him? No. I won't do it.
Free gently placed his hands on her shoulders.
Free: I'm not saying he'll replace anyone, Dalny. He needs us, and I think we need him too. This could be a chance for us to move forward. I'm not pressuring you. Just take your time to think—
Dalny jerked away from his touch.
Dalny: ENOUGH! What time, huh? I will not adopt a boy who lives on the street—ever! I'm not interested in taking in some stray, Free. He's not our responsibility. He belongs in an orphanage, not here. And I'm done talking about this. If you want to keep him around, that's on you. But don't expect me to play along with this fantasy. I've made up my mind, Free. Daniel is not staying here permanently. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have preparations to make for the baby shower.
With that, Dalny stormed out of the room, leaving Free standing there, feeling more alone than ever.
Daniel: Uncle...
Free turned to see Daniel sitting up in bed, his eyes wide with fear.
Free: You didn't sleep, dear?
Daniel: I was... I heard you. Aunty doesn't want me here?
Free's heart sank, and he sat beside Daniel.
Daniel: Will you leave me? I-I don't want to go, Uncle... I-I want to stay with you and Aunty... Please don't leave me at the orphanage...
Daniel's voice broke as tears welled up in his eyes. Free pulled him into a tight hug, his own eyes filling with tears.
Free: Ssh! Don't cry, dear.
~At Evening~
Guests started arriving, congratulating Y/n and Shu and showering them with gifts. The moment everyone had been waiting for—the gender reveal—was finally here. A large cake was brought out, and everyone gathered around, eager with anticipation. The plan was simple: the inside of the cake would reveal the gender of the babies—green for boys, yellow for girls, or both for twins.
Y/n took the knife and sliced into the cake, revealing two distinct colors—one yellow and one green.
The room erupted in cheers and applause as everyone celebrated the news that Y/n and Shu were expecting both a boy and a girl.
Y/n: Twins...
She murmured, looking down at her belly, tears of joy filling her eyes. She glanced at Shu, who was equally overwhelmed with happiness.
