Chapter 25
AMERICA'S POV
Snow lightly descends from the clouds as we hurry into the church. Thank God there aren't any cameras. So far, we're in the clear. It looks like we're going to have a white Christmas. The moment we step inside Natasha rushes off to check on the guys and Wanda shepherds me into a side room for any final touch-ups. There's really nothing to fix, so we just sit in silence, both of us deep in thought. There are only a few minutes left. It'll be nice to have a real last name again. I watch the snow fall through the window until someone knocks.
"Can I come in?" Sam asks through the door.
"Yeah, it's open."
He walks in and immediately gives me a hug. "You look fantastic."
"Thank you. So do you." I pull away. "Is it time? I thought we still had ten minutes until four."
"We do, but I need you to come see something first," he says. His eyes meet Wanda's in understanding. Whatever this is, she obviously knows about it.
"Okay."
"I'm going to find Natasha and Pietro. I'll see you soon." She waves before running off.
"We need to go this way," he says.
"Hey, Sam? Thanks for being here. It means a lot to me." I think about how we only met about eight months ago, and he's quickly become one of the most important people in my life. "I just wanted you to know... there aren't a lot of people I fully trust, but I trust you and love you like a brother. You've helped Steve and I out so much these last few months, so I just wanted to say thank you." He shrugs the compliment off, but there's a small smile on his lips.
"You and Steve are my best friends. I wouldn't miss this." He leads me down the hallway into an empty room. "You go in here." Confused, I do as he says. He shuts the door, but there's no one in here. I even walk around to check. No one. It's basically a storage closet.
"Sam?" I ask hesitantly through the door. "You still there?"
"Mer?" I immediately draw close to the door, heart racing.
"Steve?"
"Hey, doll." I can hear the smile in his voice, and I lean against the door, certain that he's doing the same thing. "Was this your idea?"
I shake my head, but he can't see that. "No. I thought it was yours."
"It must've been Wanda or Sam, then. I'm glad they came up with it, I missed you. How was your morning?"
"Good. Really good. We had a lot of fun. And so was last night. I saw Coldplay!"
"I saw Tony jump out of a window, so I think I win."
I laugh. "So that actually happened?"
"Yes. Yes, it did." He chuckles. "You ready for this, doll?"
"Yeah." My voice is soft, but I know he still hears me. "Can I open the door? Just a bit. We don't need to see each other. I just want to hold your hand for a minute."
"Don't hit me with the door again," he teases. I blush at the memory and crack the door open. I reach my hand out and feel him take it.
"I won't." There's a pause as I just grip his hand as tightly as I can. "I love you, Steve."
"I love you too, Mer. I can't wait to see you in a few minutes." I smile as he speaks. "I've got to go. It's just about time."
"Bye." He lets go and I hear his footsteps down the hallway. A new face opens the door.
"You ready?" Pietro asks, winking. I grin and take his arm.
"More than anything." We walk to the back of the church, where the wedding party is waiting in a line. We take our places in the back with Wanda, who fusses with my veil before stepping back.
"You look beautiful, Wanda," Pietro says, giving his twin a kiss on the forehead.
"Thank you. You look better than usual." Laughing, the three of us all lean in for a group hug. When Steve and I got engaged, I never would have believed that my family would be there for the big day. Now, I can't imagine today without them. Wanda breaks the hug, hands me a bouquet of red roses, and takes her place in the line as the organ music starts.
It's showtime.
First, Natasha and Clint go, followed by Tony and Wanda. After a few seconds, Pietro turns to me.
"This is us." I nod and take his arm. We start the walk down the aisle. Familiar faces surround us in the pews. Pepper, Eliza, Thor, Dr. Cho, Rhodes, even Fury and Hill. There are a few others, but when we were making invitations, Steve and I realized that we actually don't know that many people. After the initial glance-around, I only have eyes for one person.
Steve stands with Sam and the priest at the altar, eyes wide. There's this little smile on his face, this smile of disbelief. He looks so handsome. When I reach him, his blue eyes seem a little glassy. Pietro lifts my veil and gives me a gentle kiss on the cheek before putting my hand in Steve's and moving respectfully to the side.
"Hi," I whisper, squeezing his hand as we turn to the priest.
"You look beautiful," he whispers back. "I love you so much."
"Ditto, Mr. Rogers." I wink at him and he rolls his eyes as the priest begins.
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to witness the union of Steven Rogers and America Evans in the bonds of Holy Matrimony. Many events have led them to be here today, but the two of them stand before us as proof that love will always find a way." We don't let go of each others' hands until it comes time for the actual ceremony itself. "Steven and America, have you come here to enter into Marriage without coercion, freely and wholeheartedly?"
"We have," we answer in unison.
"Are you prepared, as you follow the path of Marriage, to love and honor each other for as long as you both shall live?"
"We are."
"Are you prepared to accept children lovingly from God and to bring them up according to the law of Christ and His Church?"
We exchange glances at this one. He smiles. "We are."
"Since it is your intention to enter the covenant of Holy Matrimony, join your right hands, and declare your consent before God and His Church." He addresses Steve first, and he smiles as he repeats the words.
"I, Steve, take you, America, for my lawful wife. To have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, until death do us part." The love in his eyes is so pure and deep that I feel like crying, but I repeat my vows instead.
"I, America, take you, Steve, for my lawful husband. To have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, until death do us part."
"May the Lord in His kindness strengthen the consent you have declared before the Church and graciously bring to fulfillment His blessings within you. What God has joined, let no one put asunder. May the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, the God who joined together our first parents in paradise, strength and bless in Christ the consent you have declared before the Church, so that what God joins together, no one may put asunder."
Sam steps forward with the rings, grinning at the pair of us. He's going to get such a big hug later.
"May the Lord bless these rings, which you will give to each other as the sign of your love and fidelity."
Steve takes my ring from Sam. "America, receive this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity." He slides the gold band onto my shaking finger and grips my hand for a minute to calm me down.
I take a deep breath and say the same thing, sliding the ring onto his finger. "Steve, receive this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity."
"By the power vested in me, I now declare you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Steve puts his arms around me and we kiss as he dips me low. I can feel the smile on his lips as everyone claps and the organist plays, but I ignore it all, deepening a kiss I don't ever want to end.
If I may...
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
