Old Friend (Kevin)
Prompt: I'm different now.
I love you all, my darlings!
It had been years since you had seen Kevin. The two of you had always talked to each other, of course. You always made yourself available whenever he needed someone to talk to, and in return, he made sure to offer as much advice as possible whenever you were thinking of making a major decision. It worked for the two of you. It allowed your friendship to remain without the possibility of a potentially messy relationship forming. After all, long distance relationships weren't easy for anyone.
But, when Kevin had contacted you with an opportunity to meet at a coffee shop near your home, you eagerly accepted the invitation. A deeply rooted need to see him in person spurred your nerves and excitement at the looming encounter. The day arrived quickly, and you tried to dress nicely while remaining casual. At the end of the day, it was just Kevin. He had seen you in sweats during college. There was no need to dress like you were going to a fancy restaurant.
You parked outside the establishment and entered. He was easy to find. He had obviously picked the small table for that reason, and when he spotted you, he stood and opened his arms. You stepped into the hug. Kevin was warm and vaguely familiar, and the simple action offered far more comfort than you could have imagined.
"It's so good to see you, (Y/N). Please, sit down." He pulled the chair out for you, ever the gentleman, before taking his own placement at the table. "Thank you for coming."
"Oh, it's no problem! I'm happy to see you again, Kevin. It's been too long. How have you been?"
The two of you talked deeply into the day. Conversation flowed easily and effortlessly. The time you had spend apart from your friend melted away as if it never existed in the first place.
"You seem happier," you commented softly before you two finally parted.
"I am different now, for sure, but yeah, I'm happier. Are you? I mean, you sound okay whenever we talk."
You smiled. "Yeah, I'm doing well."
Kevin walked you over to your car. "Keep in touch, okay? I'll always be here if you need me, no matter what time it is or where I'm at."
"Half of the time, I have no idea of the state of either," you joked.
He laughed; you joined in along with him. Another hug was shared before the two of you were separated once again. But, it was easier this time. Something in you felt lighter, and while you wanted to see him again as soon as possible, you were contented enough to wait. Yes, he was different, but you were, too. It just wasn't different enough to change your relationship. You were extremely grateful for that.
