Daphne Van Russell- Focused and Determined
"Too much fun and not enough work does not keep an empire afloat."
She repeated her father's words in her head as she started the second semester of the year. This was not hard for her to do. She never had any fun.
Work, work, work!
Besides taking a full load of classes, she interned at the family business two days a week working in the International Affairs department her father newly added. Van Russell stores opened their first overseas location two years ago in Paris. Daphne was helping to get another one opened in Italy.
Her major was International Business and that would come in handy at Van Russells Enterprise. Though technically she was in her second year of college, she had enough credits to almost be a senior. She planned to graduate next fall after only two and a half years and start full-time at Van Russells. She already knew what position she wanted. Manager of International Affairs. From there, Director, then on to Vice President. After her father retired in about fifteen years, she would take over.
Not that her sister or any of her cousins had a chance. Who else would continue the legacy?
She was fluent in five different languages. Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese, and Italian. Spanish was her favorite. She was in her third Spanish class since starting college. She took French and Chinese in high school, picked up Italian on her own, and took Japanese classes every summer for the past four years.
She traveled to several different countries, immersing herself in different cultures. This summer she wanted to go to Madrid. Spanish was her love language. It was so mesmerizing to her.
"Daphne V, looks like we have yet another class together," Jessica Scoville said, plopping down uninvited next to her.
Jessica was her frenemy. In high school, she barely said two words to her. Since starting Midtown University together, she acted like they were best buds. Daphne loathed her, but she was the only half-friend she had.
"I thought you were done with Spanish?"
"Pretty much. I figured this should be an easy A. Took three years in high school, this is just a refresher."
"Take another language."
"Why?"
"Broaden your horizon."
"Oh, I will! Have you heard about the new professor? Senor Monzon?"
"No. Why?"
"Let's just say he puts the fu in fuego!"
Another student nearby heard and shook her head in agreement.
"Muy caliente!"
Daphne had no idea what they were talking about until in walked the most gorgeous man she had ever laid eyes on.
Senor Monzon, the new Spanish professor was drop-dead handsome. Smoky dark eyes, dark hair, nice body, even under slacks, a button-down shirt, and a dark blazer. He looked young, and the earrings in each ear proved he was not a traditional teacher either.
She drew in a breath.
He immediately addressed them in fluent Spanish explaining his background. He was Mexican, both parents first generational U.S. citizens. He grew up in Chicago and moved to Midtown for this job.
Daphne did not see a ring on his finger. This semester was going to be anything but easy.
JESSICA SCOVILLE-Young and in Charge
She felt like if anyone could catch the professor's eye, it was her. She could barely pay attention in class because she kept watching his dick print. She imagined she was wrapped in his arms and looking into those smoky eyes.
"Good God that is a hot man!"
She would drop the class if necessary, to not have a student/teacher conflict. She looked around the class and other females were mesmerized by him as well.
Oh well!
They were not her, Jessica Lorraine Scoville, one of the top ten richest families in Midtown. Well, maybe not number four anymore, with the family business nearly going bankrupt, her father selling a good portion to the Van Russells and the family savings dwindling.
Poor little rich girl, others whispered behind her back. Not Daphne, she wouldn't kick her while down. Even though Daphne did not act like most of the rich, elite girls she grew up with, she chummed up to her anyway, for one reason only. Get in good with the Van Russells and keep her social image.
Or marry money.
How much money did a college professor make? Couldn't be that much.
Oh well, he would be good for a fuck.
After they were dismissed, she freshened her lipstick and powdered her face, fluffed her tousled bleach-blonde curls, and went over to Senor Monzon.
"Senor."
"Senorita."
She loved how he said that.
"I wanted to introduce myself to you. I'm Jessica Scoville," she said, saying her last name as if it meant something to him. She almost wanted to say, "of the Scoville family" but left that off. "I want to personally welcome you to Midtown and Midtown University. Lovely town."
"I know," he said with a grin at her. "I come here often actually."
"Oh really? Business or pleasure?"
"Family. My sister lives here."
"Awesome. So I guess you won't be lonely after all." She gave him a flirtatious smile. "I mean, maybe your girlfriend visits, or-"
"I don't think that is any of your concern," he said and turned away.
So no girlfriend and maybe he was heartbroken because he left Chicago. Things were going to get spicy with the Mexican fly guy.
JULIUS MONZON - Latin Lover
He knew the first day was going to be a test. So far, not so good. Sometimes he wondered why he loved teaching so much when it was so hard to resist the hot female students.
He wanted to bend that Jessica over his desk and teach her a lesson.
He knew he was a great-looking guy. No, he knew he was a sexy, hot Latin lover. Many, many women to choose from and he enjoyed them all. But why oh why did he always end up falling for the wrong ones?
He left Chicago and a great job and house there because he had become involved with one of his students. Granted she was twenty-one to his thirty-four, but she was his student. It was forbidden on that campus. It was forbidden here at Midtown University as well.
The relationship was kept secret, it never came out, but he had to end it and leave town from the stress of it. He took the job at Midtown University for a clean start. He loved the ladies, but he was not going to get involved with another student.
During his first few weeks in town, he met a friend, a co-worker actually, who showed him around the campus. Aaron Pitney worked in the Medical School and worked as a doctor at Midtown University Hospital. He headed to his office after class.
"What's up champ," he greeted him, giving Aaron a fist bump.
"Work as usual."
"Starting fresh kinda sucks. I'm out of my comfort zone."
"You'll hit your stride."
"I need to de-stress. Maybe we can hit a bar after your last class."
"Not today. I have rounds at the hospital all through the night. We pull all-nighters, gotta break them in well."
"Damn! Guess that's why you get paid the big bucks, doc."
"Gotta hustle hard dawg!"
"I need to meet some ladies."
"You're speaking to the wrong brother here. Do you see any trying to knock on my door? My lady is this lab coat and stethoscope." He stood and put on his white lab coat. "And we have a date with a class of wet-behind-the-ears first-year med students. I have to break em down and build them up."
"Do what you do, partner."
DR. AARON PITNEY-The Doc's In
Aaron knew he was the toughest attending doctor in their teaching hospital. He felt like if they were going to be a doctor, bring it hard or go home.
He never had it easy. His parents were AWOL, raised by his maternal grandparents. Lost his grandfather when he was ten, and his grandmother two years later. Went on to live with a great-aunt for five years, then she passed away. From there he was tossed around to other distant relatives. He hated it.
Once he left for college, he was gone for good. He had no idea what he wanted to do, but he knew he never wanted to struggle and did not want to die young.
Good thing he had the brains to study medicine because it was a perfect fit. He worked hard every day because there was no other option.
To be the best he had to do the best.
His ex-wife did not see it that way.
He was only married for four years, enough to make his daughter who he adored.
Getting remarried was not on his horizon. Dating was a rare occasion. Mainly women asked him out, not the other way around. He could take them or leave them, was how he felt.
"So class, the first lesson in medicine, as a doctor, we're not God, so don't play God," he told his residents. "With the proper knowledge, you can save someone's life. The more you learn here, the more lives you save. I take no slackers. If you're not ready to live and breathe medicine, find another field that lets you make a mistake. No room for them here."
He was a natural at what he did.
ELAYNE VAN RUSSELL-Head Bitch in Charge
It was January in Midtown and freezing. Not many people wanted to brave the outside to come to Snappies after school. There were six inches of snow outside. But she was no punk. She had her driver drop her off.
Elayne sat at the counter at Snappies, drinking hot chocolate. Carter Banks, a fellow junior, walked over and sat beside her. She inwardly groaned. Though he was nice to look at, with blonde, blue eyes, and deep pockets, he acted so immaturely. Seventeen going on ten.
"All alone?"
"No, waiting on someone."
"What guy now?"
"No guy." He needed to get lost.
"There's always a guy with Elayne Van Russell."
Did she have that kind of reputation?
"Are you harassing me?"
"No, I thought maybe I'd have a chance to go out with you."
"Fat chance." She turned away from him and sipped her cocoa. She made out with him once when she was like thirteen. She realized he was a jerk when he spread lies that they went all the way. Turning him down every day for the last four years barely made a dent in his peabrain head.
Ciara walked in and waved to her, then stomped the snow from her boots. She walked over to them.
"Hey Carter, what's new?"
"Trying to get Ms. Frigid here to go out with me."
"Frigid?" Elayne spat out. "I'll show you frigid asshole! Get the hell away from me and please, please, never come back."
"Bitch," he muttered, walking away.
"Uh, thank you!" She yelled out to him, taking it as a compliment. "I'd rather be a bitch than a douchebag loser."
A few around laughed.
"Oh E, Carter's a cutie, why did you do that?" Ciara asked, taking his spot.
"I keep telling you, all high school boys are lame and he just proved it."
"Not all, Tony's not...and I'm sure there are others."
"Dream on!"
Ciara looked around. "Hey, what can I do for some service here?"
Elayne motioned for Asia. "Another hot chocolate over here for my friend."
"Oh, her," Ciara said under her breath. "I don't think she likes me."
"Why? Asia's cool."
"Really? In what world? She's such a mean girl, and remember she's after X."
"Lots of girls are after X, my cuzzo needs to get used to that."
Asia walked over with a mug of hot chocolate and slammed it down in front of Ciara, splashing some on the bar counter.
"That was uncalled for!" Ciara yelled at her.
"Oh, sorry," Asia mustered insincerely.
Elaine stepped in to say, "Asia, do you have a problem with my friend?"
"I have no problem with you, Elayne."
"I asked if you had a problem with Ciara."
Asia crossed her arms across her chest. "No. I don't even know her."
"Good. So let's not make a problem where there is no need." Elayne pulled out her wallet and handed Asia her credit card. "For the hot chocolates. And give yourself a nice tip."
Asia took her card and smiled. "Thanks, Elayne." She rolled her eyes at Ciara, then walked away.
"Wow, you see that?" Ciara said.
"Asia is cool, just a little misunderstood. We used to hang out back in the day."
"I find that hard to believe. She's part of the mean crew...but hold up, wait, you can be mean too."
"When I need to be and who I need to be with," Elayne said. "But what about you? Before Tony you were like the loner, and wouldn't talk to anybody. My dad is your biggest contributor and even I got the cold shoulder from you."
She shrugged. "The little friends I had always wanted to use me for something else. Either to get to my father or get into my mom's dance school."
"Well I have no political aspirations nor can I dance."
"Ooo, you should dance with me at the Talent Showcase next month."
"And among your many talents, I see hard of hearing is one."
"No really, you and Chrissy, I'll teach you the steps."
Elayne shook her head no. There was no way anyhow she would dance on stage in front of the entire school. She knew her lane, talking shit and being a bitch, not dancing.
