Chapter Twenty-Three
"What if I break?"
"Where are the boys?" Amanda asked, glancing between Cleo and Lia.
"Econ," The two answered at the same time.
"Lame, how are we going to know if they're safe?" She asked with a sigh.
"Unfortunately we won't until Econ gets out," Lia said, lifting her hand to the apartment door.
After knocking three times, it quickly opened to reveal Tatum on the other side. "Hey guys," She said, scooting over to let them in.
"Finally! Now that the group's all here I feel so much better," Tara spoke. She grabbed Lia's bag, "You're staying in my room tonight. Amanda will be with Tatum, and Cleo will be out here with Anika, Mindy, and Chad."
"And whenever Ozzie and Ethan get here, we'll figure something out." Sam flipped her phone around in her hand. "It's a bit of a squeeze, but I personally feel better knowing we're all here together and that nobody's separated."
"Although at the same time, we could be locking ourselves in with the killer." Mindy sent a smug smirk to the older Carpenter sister, reaching a hand out to help Amanda with her bags.
Lia took a spot at the table next to Sam at the table, putting her phone down on the hardwood. Sam just sent her a glance, making sure none of the others were listening before speaking up.
"Have you had a chance to talk to Jonah?" From the look on her face at the boy's name, she knew that the answer wasn't going to be any good.
"No. Jenny's got him under this tight leash. He texted me the other day, but that's it." Lia unlocked her phone. She pulled up the last few messages with the Bennett twin, sliding the phone over to Sam.
Sam read the text over, a frown covering her features as she slid the phone back to Lia. "He's just grieving, he'll come around."
"He liked to act like he didn't like Joshua, but that's who he spent all his time with." Lia shook her head. It grew silent, Sam knowing there was no point in saying anything. Lia then took in a sharp breath, glancing at Sam again. "When... when you went through this last year, did you lose someone you were close to?"
Sam lightly winced at the question, not expecting it. She thought about it for a moment before replying. "My boyfriend, but it's different because he was the killer." She admitted, "I wasn't really close with any of them. I babysat Wes, his mom didn't really like me, and Dewey helped us with what he could. He saved our lives, I guess. But I wasn't close to them the way the others were."
Lia nodded, "Out of all the people in our friend group, I think I talked to Joshua the least. He was closest to Cleo and Jonah. When I see Cleo coping just fine, I start to wonder why I'm struggling to get through it as much as I am."
"Hey," Sam said, causing the other girl to look up at her. "Grief is different in everyone. Cleo also didn't see anything more than him getting stabbed. She didn't have his blood all over her, she didn't see and experience what you did. She could also be better at hiding it. You have every right to feel the way you do and if anyone says different, they're bullshit."
Lia sent a kind smile to the girl, one which Sam returned. She stood up, leaving Lia alone at the table to go help get dinner ready. She began to mess with the bracelet on her wrist, the one she refused to take off unless she was taking a shower. Her thoughts were jumbled, and although they were here all together she still didn't feel safe.
Not only did she not have Ethan here, but she didn't have Ozzie here. Sure, Chad made her feel somewhat safe considering the things he'd done for her in the past, but it didn't give her a sense of safety the way her best friend or boyfriend did.
"So when were you going to tell me that you and Ethan made it official?" Chad asked, sitting next to the girl.
"I didn't realize I needed to tell you," Lia answered as Tatum sat across from her.
"Girl, he's my best friend and his roommate, you think we wouldn't want to know?" The dark-haired girl asked, sending a smirk to Lia. "You make him a non-virgin yet?"
"Tatum," Chad scolded, sending her a look. "I really don't want to know about Ethan fucking anyone."
"Sorry, my bad. I'm just asking what everyone else wants to know." She shrugged, "I think it's cute. Hopefully, if he survives this we'll see the day he loses his virginity."
"I thought that virgins always survive?" Cleo asked from the kitchen, where she stood awfully close to Tara.
"Not always, just more likely," Tara told the girl as she stirred the food.
"Does everyone else seriously want to know?" Chad asked, looking at the group in disbelief. Nobody said anything, just sharing awkward glances. "You guys are disgusting."
"Don't lie, deep down you wanna know," Mindy spoke, sitting down next to Anika on the couch.
Lia followed suit, deciding that the TV was more interesting than the topic of her and Ethan's personal life. She took a seat on the same loveseat she and Ethan usually sat at, catching the attention of Mindy.
"You didn't get offended when I accused you of being the killer," Mindy stated.
"I know," Lia mumbled.
"Why?" Anika asked.
"It's understandable for you guys to assume everyone's the killer. I mean, you're right. We're roomies, my dad's an agent in the FBI, and all evidence leads to me. Would I sit and try to argue and defend myself as if you don't have logical reasons to think it's me?" Lia asked, "Also, it's not the first time I was accused."
"I don't really think you're the killer, Lia. I only said that because it is possible. Although, you don't give me those vibes." Mindy shook her head, "I might have been wrong last time about who the killer was, but I can confidently say I'm not getting psycho-killer vibes."
"Well, thanks." Lia messed with the bracelet on her wrist.
The breaking news caught everyone's attention, announcing that there had been another murder. Lia's heart jumped in fear that it was Ethan or Ozzie considering they were the ones not here, and part of her even worried for Jonah since she hadn't been in contact with him.
"Blackmore University students Savannah Bright and Jenny Bennett were found mutilated in their apartment. Police are still working on the details, although we do have a suspect in mind-"
Sam's name lit up on the screen, along with the video of her trying to fight the girl from the party only days ago. Sam watched the TV in horror, while everyone else just stared at the TV in shock.
Anika reached forward, shutting the TV off. Sam went and sat back at the dining table, the others who'd survived the Woodsboro massacre following suit. This left Anika, Lia, Amanda, and Cleo in the living room.
Amanda and Cleo made their way back into the kitchen to supervise dinner, while Anika and Lia stayed in their positions. Lia glanced at Anika, the girl already seemed to be looking at her.
"Who do you think it is?" Anika asked, "I'm only asking because you seemed really secure in your answer as to why you didn't get offended. Maybe I'm just sensitive, but I was offended and I swear I'm not the killer. Fuck what the rules say, it's not the love interest this time."
"I can't say who I think it is, honestly. Our groups are so used to doing their own thing, the only thing I know for sure is it's not Amanda, Cleo, Ozzie, or me." Lia said, "I'm almost completely positive it's not Ethan, considering he's been with me when most of the murders have occurred, but I know it's not the others or me because we were all there when Ghostface attacked."
"You said something about defending as to why it wouldn't be them," Anika started. "The only person that seemed to get really offended when accused was Quinn, she tried to put the blame on you."
"I don't think Quinn likes me very much," Lia said. "But that's okay, I guess."
"Is that why you never come around?" Anika asked.
Lia glanced over, noticing that the five sitting at the table were lost in their own conversation, along with Cleo and Amanda in the kitchen. She just looked back at Anika, nodding. "I don't like confrontation and I don't like problems. I didn't want drama between the group so I just decided to distance myself."
"Well we really like having you around," Anika told the girl. "Hopefully you change your mind and start coming around more, whether Quinn's here or not."
"Thank you, Anika." Lia smiled.
The sudden sound of whimpering caught everyone's attention, and everyone shared a look. "Look's like Quinn and her gentleman are at it again." Mindy joked, causing small giggles to erupt from the rest of the group.
Cleo and Amanda took a seat with Anika and Lia, tired of being the ones in charge of dinner. They began a conversation about a specific class, one Lia found herself not paying any attention to.
More thudding occurred, but nobody questioned it until everyone's phones began to go off around the same time. They all looked at each other in confusion. Lia's phone had been the only one to not go off, so she leaned down to look at Amanda's.
Everyone shared a look of worry and fear at the photo that had been airdropped. It was a photo of Quinn getting attacked by Ghostface, and it was sent by the boy whose apartment was just across the way.
This happened to be the same boy Sam had been secretly hooking up with, which had been revealed only moments prior. He had airdropped it to everyone possible, but because Lia's airdrop was turned off, he was unable to get it to her.
Standing up from their spots, they all stood in a line. They held onto each other with fear, Sam beginning to run around the apartment to look for a knife.
"Guys," Lia spoke, clinging onto Cleo. "I don't want to die."
"I don't think anyone does, Li," Amanda told her roommate, holding onto Mindy tightly.
"We need to run," Cleo grabbed onto Tara's hand, to which Mindy just nodded.
"Run."
As if on some type of queue, Quinn's bedroom door opened. Her lifeless body was thrown out, landing right on Anika. She let out a blood-curdling scream, Lia not hesitating to push Quinn off of Anika. She began to help the girl up but was flung against the wall by Ghostface.
Her head grew dizzy, and all she saw in her blurry vision was Cleo, Amanda, Tara, and Chad making their way out of the apartment in a rush. She struggled to get back on her feet, having hit her head on something nearby.
She watched in horror as Ghostface slashed at Mindy, blood immediately oozing out of her arm. They then picked Anika up, slamming her against the wall in a chokehold. Ghostface stabbed the knife into her stomach, slowly dragging it upward as Anika let out another scream, only to be thrown to the ground as Sam slammed the knife-holder against Ghostface's head.
Mindy scrambled up, grabbing her girlfriend and taking her to Quinn's bedroom. Sam began to go as well before remembering Lia was still out there. She grabbed the girl and hoisted her up. She held her arm around her shoulders, practically dragging her into the same bedroom as the other two.
Sam and Mindy immediately fought off Ghostface, barely getting the door shut. They struggled to hold it shut as they looked for something to block the door.
Anika sat on the bed, her wound bleeding out. She cried as Lia's vision came back, her eyes landing on the open bathroom door.
She stumbled into the bathroom, gagging at the dead body laying in the bathtub. The entire bathroom was bloody, just another indicator of how brutal the unknown man's death was. Pressing her hand to her mouth, she began to walk to the other door before she became face to face with Ghostface.
"Hello, Ophelia." The menacing voice spoke. Whoever it was behind the mask, Lia couldn't tell because of the voice changer. She backed up, barely escaping Ghostface's clutches as Sam pulled her into the room, slamming the door shut.
Mindy pressed her back to it as Sam grabbed another piece of furniture, putting it in front of the door.
"Samantha!" The sound of the boy who had airdropped the photo was heard, and they looked through Quinn's window to see him waving at them to get their attention.
"You're losing so much blood," Mindy cried as she pressed a cloth to Anika's stomach.
"Please say something more positive," Anika begged, grunting in pain.
Lia watched as the boy pushed a ladder to the window, holding onto it securely.
"Lia, go," Sam ordered to the redhead, who looked at her in worry.
"I-I don't think I can," Lia said. "I'm dizzy."
"Just hold on, Danny's holding onto the other side and I'll be holding onto it here, okay?" Sam asked.
Lia began to shake her head quickly, her stomach erupting in nervousness. "Sam, I-I don't think-"
"Lia," Sam said sternly, grabbing onto the girl. "Go, so we can all get out of here alive."
Lia glanced over at Mindy and Anika, who nodded in encouragement. She shakily made her way over to the ladder, climbing through the window.
"Don't look down," The boy - Danny, said.
Lia shut her eyes for a moment, the feeling of lightheadedness making its way back into her mind. She felt as if she could throw up any minute, and so instead of looking down, she looked straight ahead at Danny, the boy encouraging her to come across.
At some point, her hand slipped. Her face and chest hit the ladder roughly, but thanks to the grip both Sam and Danny had on it, she didn't fall. Once she was in arms reach Danny gripped onto her tightly, practically throwing her into the apartment.
Instead of going to the window to see what was happening, Lia stayed on the ground. The room was spinning, the feeling of something wet trickling down her face. She pressed two fingertips to her forehead, a sticky red substance covering them as she pulled them away.
"I think I'm bleeding," She mumbled.
By now, Sam had gotten into the apartment as well. Mindy was on the ladder, quickly making her way across in fear of falling.
"Guys, I feel woozy," Lia then said. She noticed a nearby trash can and crawled over to it. Almost as soon as her fingers touched the can, she threw up and emptied her stomach of any food she'd consumed that day.
"Anika you have to hurry!" Mindy screamed out.
"I can't! I don't want to die!" Anika cried out.
Lia watched from the ground in horror as the three at the window cried out to Anika, the girl refusing to move any further.
Ghostface stood in the window at the other side of the ladder, gripping it with both hands. They began to toy with Anika like it were a game, shaking it and moving it so she bounced around. She couldn't move any further due to it, the pain in her stomach growing overwhelming as the shaking got worse. Despite how tightly the three at the window held onto it, it didn't do much.
Right as she got at arm's length, Mindy grabbed onto her hand for support. They held on tightly, but due to both of their hands being drenched in blood, it did nothing. Ghostface moved the ladder one last time, and the girl flew off of the ladder.
She hit the dumpster below the apartments with a loud thud, her blood immediately soaking into the concrete.
Mindy stared at the girl in shock, Sam's eyes on the Ghostface who just grabbed the knife from the windowsill and fled the scene.
"Guys," Lia mumbled. Just before she could get another word out, more vomit came out. This time it was just liquid, as she'd already emptied her stomach of everything.
"She-she's dead," Mindy cried, as they finally turned away from the window. "Anika's dead."
Lia lay on the ground in defeat, the feeling of the room spinning becoming almost too much to handle. This caught the attention of Sam, who was on the ground next to Lia in no time.
"Don't fall asleep, Lia, stay awake!"
