Chapter 23
Rosie and her guide stood at the edge of a log that partly hung over cliff. Fog was all the two tiny beings could see as they both looked down. The Pop troll nervously gripped her backpack straps while the gentle breeze blew through her hair one last time before fading away. The Party Crasher threw a tiny piece of broken stone into the fog but,it made no sound as it disappeared. No sound was heard either when it landed on the hidden ground.
" Are you sure this is the right place?" Rosie asked concerned.
" Yup! Sugar Plum is down there. Nobody really guards her but, once a week she gets a visit from the Rock King's pals. Lucky for us it ain't visiting day. " The Party Crasher confirmed confidently.
He slid his hands into his grey jean pockets still watching the fog. Rosie glupped feeling her fear raise within her soul. The fact that she couldn't see beyond the fog worried her. What if something was hiding down there? What if the Party Crasher was wrong? What if there were still Rock trolls walking around? What if this was a trap? The woman shook her head for a brief moment trying to clear her mind from her negative thoughts and fears.
" How how far down is it actually? Is is it dangerous?" Rosie asked with her voice trembling.
"Oh it's only -..." The Crasher paused then smiled mischievously turning around to face Rosie. " Maybe it would be better if I go down for you? Afterall for a troll like you, going into a prison might be too scary. I'll just take -"
After his pause his voice had became suspiciously gentle and caring. Very different from his mischievous trickster personality that she had faced when the pair had met earlier. Rosie turned her head to her guide with raised an eyebrow and an untrusting blank expression. She eyed his reaching out hand suspicious as it approached her hair. The hair that stored the magic flower petals.
"Don't touch the hair!" Rosie barked slapping his hand away. " Respect my boundary. "
The man was surprised, to say the least, by the female troll's actions. His whole body stiffened as his hands curled with his lower arms brought close to his chest. Like he had forgetten about her display of stress related anger she had shown earlier when he stole from her. He had thought that it was a one time thing and that all Pop trolls were the most polite and niciest to others of all trolls. Too good for their own good but, clearly this one he met wasn't playing around with him.
" Besides I aIready came this far. " Rosie added calmly redirecting her gaze to the fog. " I have to be the one to get the Love Potion. "
" Only cause of my help..." The Party Crasher pointed out.
" And I appreciate it a lot but... How do I know you won't run off with the Rose and Primrose petals? Again... " Rosie placed her hands her hips turning her full body to her guide.
Her manner of speaking was polite but, her words were not as sweet as her politeness. She had no intention in magically forgetting how the stranger scared her, robbed her, ran from her and on purposely made himself disappear from her sight. That first impression wasn't a good foot to stand on trustwise but, Rosie had no choice other than to accept his help earlier. She wanted to complete her mission and return to the Pop lands as soon as possible. Then the Crasher made the most dramatic express of disbelief he could master.
" What? Me? Why would I? Don't you trust me?" The Party Crasher exclaimed like he had been betrayed.
His bad performance did nothing to change the Pop troll's mind. She just folded her arms protectively with her blank stare never leaving. It was like Rosie had heard his play a million times before, despite them only meeting for the first time earlier that day.
The man sensing that his "I would never" card was not working, he dramatically stabbed his heart with an imaginary knife. His head tilted to the side as the back of his free hand was brought to his forehead. His eyes became somewhat sadder but, not convincing enough for Rosie to feel sorry for him.
" Ow. Right in the heart. Even a Pop troll doesn't trust an Elvis..." The male Crasher contuined covering his 'broken heart' with both hands.
" Are you done? " Rosie said blankly then her tone shifted as she contuined asking a genuine question. "And your name is Elvis?"
The now named stranger's performance face turned blank giving up on his acting career. This is why he wanders around the Rock Forest instead being on the big screen of Goblinwood. If you scam a troll with performance then why keep beating the bush? Elvis walked around Rosie and opened her empty backpack. He didn't even check it before he reached inside.
" Why are you digging in my pack?" Rosie said unhappily and shocked.
" Checking for rope..." Elvis stated calmly.
" I didn't bring any. "
For the third time that day, Elvis paused slowly processing what he had just heard. He looked into the pack again, checking it for the second time to comfirm the statement. He stared at how empty the bag was mentally slapping himself for not figuring out sooner why he couldn't find anything inside. Elvis silently gorwled at himself frustrated with his own stupidity as he walk back to the spot he was standing in a moment ago. Rosie glanced over at her still open backpack then back at the intruding party.
" Then how am I suppose to go down with you? I know! Your hair! " Elvis commented shifting from confused to excited.
The female troll backed up immediately when Elvis regained his excitement from his new idea. It wasn't that Rosie couldn't help him go down into the fog with her hair but, she truly did not want to be alone with him in the said fog. Risking her very important potion ingredients around a proven thief while being blinded was not on the list of things she was willing to risk. Her gut strongly agreed with her on that note too. Rosie looked down at the fog again then slowly brought her gaze back to her guide. She ran her fingers through her purple locks combing it.
" How about you just stay up here and keep watch for me? For the Rock trolls... " Rosie suggested blankly.
She pulled off her backpack and tenderly pulled the hood over the open storage space. With simple and light push of her thumb she clipped it closed again. Elvis's bright eyes lost their shine disappointed. He scoffed to himself defeated approaching backwards to the log wall behind him. When his clothed back hit the bark Elvis folded his arms.
" Fine. Always the boring jobs. " Elvis grumbled softly.
Rosie sighed at her company's choosen componentness. Despite the fact that he wasn't fond of the idea, Elvis taking to in seconds was a good sign. At least to Rosie it was. The troll turned herself around and carefully stepped closer to the edge. Her nervousness returned as she contuined to stare at the very low-lying clouds. She began silently repeating her usual breathing techniques to calm her mind while she placed her pack straps on her shoulders.
" Should I push you or are you gonna - " Elvis interrupted the mental preparation.
" No, thankyou. I choose life. "
The Pop troll extended and whipped her hair firing up at a tree. Her powerful hair lurched onto a strong ans tough branch. Then Rosie, after releasing one last deep breath, stepped right off the edge steadily swinging herself to the middle of the fog and lowered herself, disappearing into the unknown. Her feet touched something soft and familiar once they landed on the ground.
Once her hair had returned to it's orginal state, Rosie lightly wrapped her hand around near the top and slightly pulled it up. Her magical hair lit up becoming a bright yellowish light. The small troll could now see anything close to her through the fog. She looked down at her feet to find what she was standing on. It was moist grass and near her foot were a handful of tall sticks.
" JUST GO FORWARD UNTIL YOU SEE A TREE TRUNK WITH METAL DOORS!" Elvis yelled.
" OKAY! I'LL BE RIGHT BACK!" Rosie called out.
The adventurer looked around checking for any potential threats but, there was nothing, except the fog and silence. Rosie bended over grabbing one of the tall sticks and placed into the soil so it could stand. She repeated this action with a second stick and pulled both pieces of dark wood closer to form an big X. Rosie smiled calmly at her location marker feeling more at peace with the idea of walking through the fog.
Ten minutes later... Rosie was still walking. Every step she took was steady and carefully placed. Her ears had became more sensitive in terms of her hearing. Her eyes scanned everything that came into her view as she carried on. Her hair had become brighter providing more light to Rosie's path but, she couldn't make it bright enough to see beyond ten troll feet.
" Where the heck is that tree truck? I have been walking forever! " Rosie complained frustrated. " I am so gonna kick Elvis' b-
Rosie had gotten so lost in her frustrations that she hadn't noticed where she was going. Her whole body bumped straight into metal and shut doors! The sound of her crash rang extra loud into her sensitive ears while she flinched at the sudden impact.
" Ow..." Rosie exclaimed stepping back with shut closed eyes and rubbing her sore nose.
Rosie had finally found Sugar Plum's prison...
