Chapter 2- graduation
I put on black sweatpants and a tight black sports t-shirt of Nike and put on some mascara and lip gloss. I put my hair in a messy bun and look at myself in the mirror. Perfect.
Exams, here I come.
When I come downstairs everyone is already there. My parents and my sisters are all eating eggs at the kitchen table and look at me when I enter. "Good morning." I mumble. My mother does not give me a glance and my father gives me a contemptuous look.
"What are you wearing?" He asks surprised. "Gym clothes." I say looking for cornflakes and yogurt in the fridge.
"Gym clothes? Do you have to gym? You had exams, right?" Evangeline asks. I finally found everything and put the cornflakes and yogurt together in a bowl. "I also have a gym class in between." I mutter between two bites of corn flakes. "Phew, I almost thought we had to live with her another year." Anastasia whispers in Evangeline's ear. I immediately turn around. "What did you say Anastasia?" I ask angrily. She looks at me innocently. "Nothing." I look at her cautiously. "Do not lie to me!"
"That's enough Joseline! How dare you accuse your sister of lying!"
My mom shouts at me. I eat quietly from my corn flakes. "Joseline!"
I still don't respond. "Not even having the decency to sit at our table, accusing your sister of lying and not even answering afterwards? Unbelievable. How can this be my daughter ?!" She screams, this time louder. I'm sure the neighbors have heard this. My father says nothing but nods in agreement. Anastasia and Evangeline grin and Mom and Dad don't even notice because they are too busy accusing me of everything. "Get it out of our house! Now!" I throw the bowl down in the sink. "All right! I'm already going." I snarl at them.
I walk into the hall and put on my white Filla's. My airpods flash as a sign that they are connected and I put them in my ears. I put the music loud so that I only hear the music. I vaguely hear that my parents are calling after me but it sounds even softer than a breeze. I open the door and jog all the way to school. I don't even bother closing the door behind me.
It is a half hour walk from my house to school, but my parents thought it was 'a waste of money' to buy a bicycle or something for me so I have to do it. My sisters both have a brand new pink bicycle, while their school is less than 300 meters away. That's a sign right?
When I finally arrive at school, Max is waiting at the entrance. I kiss him. "Hey babe". "Hey" he replies. "Why are you late?" He asks concerned. "Oh you know ... Problems with my parents and sisters." He nods his head as a sign that he understands. At his home it is about the same situation as at my place. I take his hand. "Come on. We shouldn't be late."
