52. Epilogue.

Two Years Later

Two years.

It doesn’t feel that long. Not really. More like a dream that flickers in and out, like light through the cracks of drawn blinds.

Marcelina stands by the window, her figure softened by the warm afternoon glow. She’s not looking at me, but I can feel her presence, a steady pull that anchors me in place. She’s always had this effect, even when I didn’t want to admit it.

Two years ago, I wouldn’t have believed we’d be here, sharing the same space, building something together. Back then, it was all sharp edges and stubborn pride, each of us trying to outdo the other. Now, it’s different. Still intense, still challenging, but softer around the edges.

“Do you think it works?” she asks, turning to me. Her voice is casual, but there’s something in her tone—an invitation, a quiet dare.

I glance at the screen in front of me. The design is clean, polished, but she’s right—it’s missing something. “It’s good,” I say, leaning forward, “but it’s not... us.”

Her lips curve, a small, knowing smile that makes my pulse quicken. “And what would make it ‘us’?”

“Something bold. Unexpected. Let the design breathe a little.”

She raises an eyebrow, her smile widening just enough to tease. “Bold, huh? That’s a little risky.”

“Good,” I reply, leaning back in my chair. “Risk is where the magic happens.”

Her laughter is soft, warm, and it settles between us like it belongs there. The room feels smaller now, quieter, like the rest of the world has faded.

It’s been two years, and she still has this ability to pull me into her orbit, to make me forget everything else.

I catch myself staring and force my focus back to the desk. The hum of the office surrounds us, but it feels distant, muffled.

“Do you ever think about how we got here?” I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.

She looks at me, her expression thoughtful, like she’s weighing the question in her mind.

Finally, she shrugs, her smile softening. “Sometimes. But I think... we stopped fighting it. And that’s why it works.”

Her words hang in the air. I nod slowly, the weight of it settling in my chest. She’s right. We stopped fighting—each other, ourselves—and somehow, it all fell into place.

Her phone buzzes again, but she doesn’t even glance at it. Instead, she steps closer, her movements unhurried.

“What about you?” she asks, her voice quieter now. “Do you think about it?”

“More than I should,” I admit.

She tilts her head, studying me with that sharp, unrelenting gaze of hers. It’s the same look that used to intimidate me, the one that used to make me feel like I was being dissected.

Now, it feels like she’s trying to see me.

“Good,” she says softly, her lips curving again. “Because I think we’re just getting started.”

The air shifts, and for a moment, it feels like the ground beneath me isn’t as solid as I thought. But I don’t mind. Not when she’s looking at me like that, like I’m the only thing that matters.

Two years ago, I would’ve run from this feeling. Now, I can’t imagine anything else.

Two years ago, I couldn’t have imagined this. But now, I can’t imagine anything else.

Two somehow turned into my magical number!
