ding !
May groans, placing her pencil down beside her ipad and taking a look at her phone, its screen unlocking as a message pops up. "Gosh, what is it now?" she huffs, hands running through her hair, brown with black bottoms, and picks up her phone.
PETAL
im done with my shift at the supermarket, you can come here so we can buy your groceries and snacks
May types a "yeah, okay!" in response and takes her round thin rimmed glasses, she leaves her bedroom studio, going into the kitchen to take the shopping list from the fridge. she slips on her long ash brown coat, stuffs her wallet into the pocket, patting her hair down when she passes the little mirror decorating in her living room and puts on her shoes, ready to leave to the supermarket Leaf works at.
the street is cold, city lights falling on the stoned pavement, there's a subtle hassle in the atmosphere. 24-7 shops open, neon signs of the clubs and gaming cafes. the odd warm smell of baked food wafting in the air as May passes the local bakery cafe. she reaches the supermarket rather quickly, maybe it is because the cold was seeping into her boots and her coat and freezing her.
"over here, May!"
she enters and looks up, spotting Leaf removing her counter lady vest, folding it and handing it over to her co-worker who will be taking over after her. she bows and then gestures May to follow her through the aisles.
May takes an empty basket along the way, catching upto Leaf soon enough.
"you just got off, why don't you go back home and rest?" she asks, falling into line beside Leaf while the older halts in front of the cereals section, eyes looking carefully through the options as she ignores May's statement by waving her hand, brushing the topic off.
May shakes her head, picking up the almond honey-bunches and placing it into the basket. she walks a bit ahead and looks through the chips and biscuits, taking her favourites.
"hey! what about my favourites?" she hears Leaf whine and before she can tease the older, Leaf is already dumping her favourite banana milk packets and peanut biscuits. she laughs at the choices of the older girl but Leaf only grins at her. "c'mon, you can't leave out peanut biscuits! now please take tangy tomato chips for me."
"yeah, okay," May laughs, pushing Leaf's shoulder playfully and takes four packets of tangy tomato chips for the older.
she will never understand Leaf's choice of favourites.
———
they are soon back at May's apartment, lounging on the couch with the TV on, some animal documentary going on while they are both busy on their phones, munching on monaco tarts May had made as soon as they stepped foot into the house.
"how's working on your webtoon project going on?"
May shrugs, leaning down on the couch more and with mouth full of salty biscuit and savoury vegetables and cheese, she mumbles, "nothing much productive, to be honest. i'm on the second chapter but it is so damn difficult to draw out the panels and scenes even if you have them all laid out in your mind."
"it's tiring, petal. a lot, like my mind just can't focus." her voice is low, and she wonders if Leaf heard her or not. luckily she gets the hint because then Leaf is wrapping her arms around May and pulling her close to her. the older knows May is tired, has known that ever since May decided to not go out like she used to and focus on the project.
Leaf runs her hands through May's brown locks, humming, "how about we go to my friends party tonight?" she asks, knowing May will refuse but it doesn't hurt to try.
May looks ahead, at the TV but her mind is swirling in the words Leaf suggested. a party? this late? but it has just been 11:30 pm. maybe she can go, but there are lots of people, it will be filled with sweaty bodies and alcoholic stench. she wrinkles her nose in disgust, at the thought of alcohol and sweaty bodies.
"uh, no.."
"why not? you can loose a little stress too, it will be just a little booze in your system, thats all." Leaf pesters, not wanting to give up because the younger girl clearly needs to get drunk, even just a little to relieve the stiff mind.
May ponders for a while, Leaf going back to focusing on her phone, probably texting her friends until May answers.
"okay, i'll go."
"that's the spirit! now let's get dressed decent and get moving!!"
