Chapter Nineteen: Don’t Bother Saving Me
The sun beat down on us from above. I felt as if I were being cooked alive. It hadn’t rained in weeks, making the heat that much more unbearable. I don’t know where Naruto found all of his energy. It felt as if mine were being zapped from my body as we trudged forward. Naruto was bouncing all over the place, when I probably looked like the walking dead. Lovely.
“Woohoo!” Naruto yelled. He was excited--still--to get such a ‘big’ mission. I could’ve strangled him.
Kakashi and Tazuna were discussing some kind of business when I saw it. A puddle. I doubt any animal could’ve made such a thing. I stopped walking for a moment, staring.
“Hitomi.” Kakashi was giving me a warning glance. I nodded and started walking again. He had undoubtedly noticed it. Perhaps my teammates had, also? I couldn’t be to certain.
They acted otherwise. But maybe they were doing just that; acting.
I ran over to our team leader. “Kakashi?” My whisper was urgent. Again, he gave me the same look.
“Just keep walking. Ignore it.”
“But, why? I--”
“I said, keep walking.”
He had a weird look in his eye. And was obviously determined to shut me up. But, why? Shouldn’t we be readying ourselves for an attack? We should be told our stances; he should give us our orders so we can fight. I huffed and put my arms over my chest. This guy is so confusing! Second only to Sasuke.
Not even a second later a kunai flew by my head, hitting a tree. A ninja had emerged from the puddle; another flew out from the trees. Everyone had been caught off guard and let out different varies of shrieks. I had been ready.
The ninja immediately went for Kakashi, wrapping chains around him. They kept squeezing him, harder and harder. You could see the life fading from his eyes.
“Kakashi-sensei!” Sakura screamed. And for once, she had a good reason to. He was gone; there was nothing we could do. Their next target was Naruto. My guess was as good as any, to why, though. The state he was in, he was no threat. He stood frozen from shock and fear. I wouldn’t watch this time. No, I would save him. I kicked one in the chest, sending him flying in the other direction. By then the other one had already gotten to Naruto, and sliced his hand. I cursed under my breath. I knew there was no way I could get to him in time, but my body still tried.
Before any more damage could be done, Sasuke took the chains that were aimed at Naruto, and wrapped them around a tree. Rendering the ninja useless.
The one that I had kicked into the air was aiming his attack at Tazuna now. Sakura tried to protect Tazuna by standing before him, going on the defensive. Sasuke kicked the guy, making him hit a tree. This didn’t stop him, though. But it gave me enough time to push Sakura out of the way. I didn’t like her, but she was still my teammate, and I wouldn’t let her get hurt. I would be Tazuna’s shield. The ninja had sharp claws, no doubt filled with venom. This didn’t make me move an inch. I was ready to feel the sharp claws pierce through my skin. This was my job, after all. Protect the client at all cost.
Sasuke decided to play hero again, and put himself between me and the attacker. “What the hell are you doing? Move! I can’t let anyone else get hurt!” I hissed.
As much as I hated to admit it, he was too important to me. I would loose neither him nor Naruto. He was just going to have to get over it.
“You’re too noble.” His voice was too sarcastic for my liking. “I refuse to loose you either.”
I gasped; “Sasuke!” the ninja had swung his arm in the air, getting ready for his attack. I flinched back, I wasn’t ready to see Sasuke blood fill the air. Or watch him be filled with agony. It was too unbearable. Thankfully, Kakashi decided to make his appearance. He threw the ninja next to the other. He then wrapped them both in their own chains. Making it impossible for them to move. Wait….Kakashi? Wasn’t he dead? I was pretty certain that he was….
When Kakashi couldn’t get any useful information out of the two, he killed them. I hid my face from the terror. I would one day have to do that. I will one day have to kill a man. Hundreds, even. My body collapsed to the ground. Not from fatigue or injury, from relief. We had won. No one was dead. And Naruto was the only one who got hurt. Thank the heavens it was only a small scratch to the hand.
Sasuke dropped to his knees beside me. “Hey, are you okay?” He lightly cupped my face in his hands. His eyes searched my face; genuinely worried. I looked helplessly at him. Our moment was short lived though.
“Don’t you ever do that, again.” My voice was so scary, it could probably make the Hokage cry. He looked hurt, but quickly put his emotionless mask up.
“I just saved you.”
“I don’t need to be saved! How could you put yourself in danger like that!?” My voice dropped to a whisper, “I couldn’t ever bare to loose you.”
“I can’t--”
“Save it. You ever attempt to do that again, and I will personally slit your throat.”
My eyes traveled over to Naruto. He was giving this speech about how he would never need to be saved again, that he would be the one to save people. I snorted, not over my dead body. He then proceeded to drain the poison from his hand, by cutting the wound deeper.
“That was a great speech and all, but if you loose any more blood, you’re going to die.” Nice one Kakashi, freak him out, why don’t you?
I walked over to where Kakashi was bandaging Naruto’s hand. “How is he?”
“He’ll be just fine. It’s just a little scratch, nothing to worry about. It should heal in no time.” He assured me, giving off his infamous crinkled eye smile. At least, I think it’s a smile. He seemed a bit to cheerful. As if he was hiding something.
“Okay…”
Kakashi got up to tend to Tazuna. No doubt to question him. I went to leave with him, I would like to hear this man’s pathetic excuse on why he was endangering poor genin’s lives. I felt a hand grasp my lower ankle. My heart accelerated as I slowly looked down, expecting to see claws, feel his hand rip through my skin. None of that happened. It was just a normal human hand. I really needed to chill.
“Hitomi….sit.” Naruto’s voice was so demanding. Since when was he my father? Either was, I obliged. I needed to get this out of my system. I turned to face him, but quickly turned my gaze to the ground when I saw he was assessing me. Watching my every move.
“I’m sorry.” I blurted out. He’s been living through his own personal hell for his whole child hood. I’m the only one who treated him like an actual person. And I stopped that days ago, it tore my heart in half. He didn’t need this crap, especially from me.
“For what? Eh, it doesn’t matter. I’ve been meaning to talk to you. I have something to tell you….” My head snapped towards him. ‘Talks’ were never good. Don’t ever trust people when they say it’s just a friendly talk. Last time I had one of those, my parents were found dead.
“You aren’t pregnant, are you? Wait….that wouldn’t make sense. Unless you got pregnant with your sexy jutsu. Hmm….is that even possible? Probably not. Tell me, damn you! The suspense is killing me!”
Naruto sweat dropped at my little outburst. :It’s safe to say that I am not pregnant.” I laughed at my stupidity. I quickly sobered up when something else came to mind.
“Did you get someone pregnant? It better not be Sakura’s. I will not be a god mother to a thing like that!”
“Why do you keep jumping to conclusions about pregnancy? It has nothing to do with that!”
“Are you gay? I mean, that’s understandable, you liking Sakura and all. Ooh! You and Sasuke can be gay together!”
“…..”
I felt glares piercing into my back. Sakura and Sasuke looked as if they were trying to set me on fire with my eyes. I’ve tried that so many times, and for once, I’m glad it doesn’t work. But, I guess I wasn’t exactly quiet about my insults. It’s not as if I hurt their feeling, though. They weren’t even good insults! Kakashi let out a nervous laugh, sensing the tension.
“Let’s go, shall we?” He asked hopefully. Trying to get their minds off of killing me.
“Okay!” I agreed. I wasn’t exactly in the mood for dying, anyways.
“Thank you, Hitomi.” Naruto whispered. I looked at him and smiled. “That’s what I’m here for you.” I knew he was referring to earlier with the rogue ninja. Not that I should be the one he should be thanking. I just kicked the bastard. Sasuke is the one who really saved him.
“I’ll return the favor.”
“Don’t you even dare think about it. You try, and I will make sure you never get another bowl of Ramen in your life.” He swallowed and nodded. That would probably be the biggest threat in the world to Naruto. And it worked like a charm. I gave him my 1000 watt smile and started skipping.
“Let’s get this show on the road!”
I wasn’t as scared as Naruto. But the fear was definitely still there, but I wouldn’t let it rule my life. Especially when Naruto needed me the most. Now that he was a ninja, his life would be in danger, everyday. I swore on my life that I will protect him.
I may be somewhat scared of him, but he’s still my best friend. My brother, even. Nothing could or would ever change that. I swear on my parents’ graves I will protect him with everything I have in me. Even if that means loosing my life……
