Caught in the Middle

This is based on the song 'Caught in the Middle' by A1.

Adrien sat next to Marinette placing a piece of vanilla cake into his mouth as she gushed to her parents about how delicious each and every piece has been.

They'd tried so many flavours that Adrien was wondering how they would ever choose just one. He looked over at his fiance, enthralled by the excitement she was displaying about something as simple as choosing their wedding cake. Unknown to her though, he was stuck between a rock and a hard place.

He loved her, really he did. They seemed to fit together well, and she filled in a part of his life that was empty. A missing puzzle piece to his jigsaw. However, as she slotted in another had cruelly taken her piece out. He was still incomplete. She never had the time for him. She never wanted him, even though he tried for years and years. There was always another, and to make it worse she was now engaged to the other 'boy'. The boy she loved.

With her, he had history, they had something no others would have, a certain trust, a certain level of commitment, the need to protect each other. That was never enough for her though. This other boy was everything she wanted, she made that clear every time he questioned her. It was over, he had to move on himself, so he did.

He loved Marinette, but only with half his heart. As soon as he saw her again, his heart swayed and, now, he was caught in the middle.

~~~~~~~~
"Goal!" Adrien ran up to Marinette, grabbing her and spinning her around. Her laugh was heavenly and brightened his days. Her happiness meant everything to him. He loved to see her smile. He loved to put that smile on her face.
"That's my girl." He placed her feet down onto the grass and kissed her gently on the lips.
"Get a room!" Kim shouted, causing the others to shout too and wolf whistle at them.
Marinette's confidence never failed to amaze him, as she grabbed the back of his neck and pulled him down for a deeper kiss. Adrien wholeheartedly responded to Marinette's affections, enjoying every feeling she brought to him. The joy, the love, the brightness. Some days he really thought he was moving on. He really thought he was over her, until an alert sounded putting him in turmoil. He was going to see her again.
"Akuma!" Alya announced, grabbing Nino and running off in the direction the news broadcast had announced.
Like a memory that couldn't be erased, he guided his fiancee to safety before running off to transform. Running towards the other half of his heart.
Making his way up to their rooftop, the embedded memories of her made their way back to the surface. His love was here to stay.
He thought he was over her, he was wrong.
He thought it would be easy once he was with Marinette, he was wrong.
He was caught in the middle.
~~~~~~~~

Adrien sat inside of the church dressing room, Nino by his side, hip flask in hand. There was nothing wrong with a bit of dutch courage before waiting at the bottom of the aisle, was there? All the grooms did it, didn't they?

His thoughts began to run away from him, and for the final time, he made his comparison.

Marinette was different. She was the sunshine on a rainy day.

His Lady was his warmth, thawing his once frozen heart.

Loving Marinette was easy, she was just so easy to love.

But he couldn't get over his Lady.

"I can't do it." His voice was a whisper. He could feel the tears beginning to well up on his lower eyelids, knowing he couldn't' commit to Marinette. She deserved more. She deserved a lot more than this.

He couldn't stop thinking about her he'd never stop thinking about her. The memories were too much. The bond was too much.

Without the Miraculous, he knew his heart, body and soul would belong to Marinette only. She didn't deserve this split state of mind and heart, she didn't deserve to be caught in the middle.

~~~~~~~~
The previous evening ...
"So, I'm getting married tomorrow." Adrien played with the ring on his finger. The ring which brought him to this perfect woman, to his soulmate. "Just say the word and I'll cancel it. I can't stop thinking about us. I can't stop thinking about you."
Marinette looked at her cat-like partner. He was looking down at his Miraculous, not wanting to give her eye contact whilst he stated his claim.
"I love her, I really do. But I love you too. I just can't stop thinking about you, about our history,"
Marinette reached her gloved hand out and took her partners,intertwining their fingers together.
"I'm marrying my boy tomorrow. I love you, I really do, but Chaton I have committed and I absolutely adore him. I have since I was fourteen."
"So this is it?" He asks, throat full, heart aching.
"I'm afraid so, kitty. You have your new life to live with your soon to be wife. I've heard you talk about her, and I know you will be happy. I can tell you love her, you brighten up every time you mention her. I feel like I know everything about her, she sounds wonderful."
"She is wonderful," Adrien comments, "I'm just caught in the middle."
~~~~~~~~

"What do you mean? You can't just cancel! Marinette will be crushed."

"I can't stop thinking about her. It's not fair." His heart was breaking, for Marinette and himself. He really loved her. They'd had a perfect relationship, but he couldn't erase the memories of his lady. They were his history, and would be his future too. How could he share that with someone who didn't even know he was a superhero. He looked over himself in the mirror, he was in the suit she'd designed for him. The perfect fit, the perfect style, from one of his perfect ladies.

No, this wasn't fair on Marinette. He couldn't make her share his heart.

"Thinking about who?" Nino questioned.

"My partner."

Nino looked at his best friend.

"Have you been cheating on Marinette? That's not ok, dude. She loves you so much, this will destroy her."

Adrien knew every word was true. It wasn't ok, and it would destroy her, but he hadn't been cheating physically. Though, it stands to question his heart.

"I haven't, and never would, cheat on her." He sat down on one of the arm chairs in the room, dropping his forearms to his knees, and his head in between his legs before whispering his transformation.

"Ladybug?" Nino whispered, heartbreaking for both his friends.

Adrien nods, returning back to his civilian self.

"I can't stop thinking about her." Adrien couldn't look at his friend, he could only try and steady his own breathing.

A black creature flew over to Nino suggesting he went and got pigtails. He nodded before heading towards the door. As quickly as he opened it, he closed it again.

"I'll support you whatever you do, man. I'm your best friend and your best man. Just make sure you make the right decision."

Adrien looked up to see the back of his friend leave the room.

Sighing, he pulled out his phone and looked at his private camera roll. Pictures of both Marinette and Ladybug interchanged as he flicked through.

What was the right choice?

He was caught in the middle.

~~~~~~~~
The door opened again.
Adrien was too afraid to look up.
"Nino said you wanted to speak to me, though it is bad luck to see the bride in her wedding dress before the ceremony, so I've taken it off for now."
Adrien finally looked up to see Marinette dressed in a white robe. He was quite sure it was silk and had 'Bride to Be' embroidered on the back. She was smiling at him. Her face beaming like any bride would be on their wedding day.
"So what's wrong, hot stuff?"
Adrien could feel the tears run down his face. He couldn't do this, but knew he had too. He looked down again.
"I can't marry you." His voice was low, barely audible to himself, let alone to who it was aimed at.
He looked up to see a worried expression in Marinette's eyes. She didn't look as though she was going to speak, so he continued.
"I thought it would be different, being with you. I thought I could forget about her, but I can't. Every time I see her everything comes flooding back and I can't do that to you. I love you so much, Marinette, but even though she's getting married I can't bring myself to do the same. I can't share my heart between both of you. You deserve so much more."
Marinette continued to look him in the eye. She looked broken. He'd broken her.
He could feel his anxiety levels build up and he had to get out of there before he had a panic attack.
He walked towards her and placed one last kiss on her cheek.
"I'm sorry." And with that, he was gone.
~~~~~~~~

She'd been dumped by the love of her life on her wedding day. Hell, she didn't even get a chance to put on her wedding dress, her perfectly chosen wedding dress.

She stood still for a couple of minutes, shell shocked by the events which just took place before she ran out the door in search of him.

Still only in her robe, she ran down the front steps. Thunder clapped and it began to rain. Just like that first day, though this time there was no umbrella to keep them safe.

Heading to the church gardens, she saw a black outline sitting and staring at a grave.

"Chat Noir?" He flinched when he heard her voice.

"Chat Noir?" She repeated.

Taking a deep breath, he turned around to face her. Praying the mask hid the tears currently making a waterfall of his face.

"Marinette, are you getting married?" He questioned, volume up to be heard over the rain.

"I was but my groom has run away. Something about another woman."

Adrien let out a harsh laugh.

"He doesn't deserve a girl like you."

"Actually, Chaton, I don't deserve him. You see, I have another boy. I just chose Adrien as he was my first true love."

Adrien looked up feeling as though someone had taken a fish hook and pulled out his guts. She'd been cheating on him. After all this time panicking, she had been the one unfaithful.

Marinette looked behind Chat and moved closer.

"Your hair." Adrien commented as she knelt next to him by the grave.

"It's only water. I'll get over it."

Marinette kissed her fingers and placed a hand on the grave of M. Agreste.

"You come here often Chat?" The inquiry shook him. What could he say without giving away his identity?

"Once a week since myself and LB pulled her from the basement of the Agreste mansion. I feel I owe it to her after we couldn't save her."

"It's been ten years. That's really admirable. I come here often too, she knows all my secrets. Including how I fell in love with her son, twice."

"Twice?" Adrien questioned. She'd never mentioned twice. Only once, in the rain.

"Yup." She responded. "But he's caught in the middle of two loves, and I'm hoping I can fix that."

He looked her over, wondering what she meant. How could she be so calm? Perhaps she wanted to be with the other boy and this way she could? She didn't have to break it off with him, he'd done all the hard work.

"Adrien never gave me a chance to speak. He just left before I could get a word in. I needed to tell him something."

Marinette was staring into Adrien's eyes, and he could feel his breath hitch in his throat. Coughing, he tried to speak.

"What," cough, "what would you have said?"

His heart was racing, his whole body was shaking. She stood up and began to make her way through the rain to the church doors.

"It's quite simple really," she shouted over the storm. "Spots on."
