Chapter Three: Realization-- DUN DUN DUN!
Vince was pretty sure he was dead. That is, until the girl he had just recently fell on threw a gleaming golden knife in the creature's distorted face.
He was pretty sure she threw a coin at first, but strangely, it had turned into a knife that hit the Cyclops right in the knee.
Dust spewed out from the wound like a waterfall, spilling to the already dusty ground. A groan of agony came from the monster, who clutched it's wounded knee in pain. It's face twisted in an agonized expression.
"Skittles!",it bellowed as it's hand swooped down in a clenched fist and plunged towards were they were a minute ago. A web of cracks appeared under the monster's hand due to the extreme impact.
"Run!", Vince screeched and grabbed the dark-haired stranger's hand, which felt warm and soft in his own.
She yelped as he started dragging her away from the monster who was trying to find where the skittles were in a pitiful attempt.
The son of Ares didn't know monsters could sniff skittles too, maybe next time he should think twice before keeping a candy wrapper in his pocket.
The angry monster pulled out the knife from his knee and tossed it in their direction and it shot straight towards them.
He admit, he maybe let out a not-so-manly scream when it narrowly chopped his hair off.
His companion was faster though, she grabbed the knife as it sailed an inch above his head, right before it fell on the floor. Though her catch wasn't all that perfect.
Droplets of blood dripped down from her hand, indicating that she had hurt herself while catching the dusty, now red tinted, deadly projectile.
She winced and whimpered in pain.
"Come on",he muttered, concerned and pulled her to an exit. The monster bellowed and charged after them, hearing their hurried footsteps.
Quickly, they dashed away from the room.
For what seemed like hours, they jumped over gaps between floors, ducked from flaming flying arrows and ran as fast as they could when they got chased by venomous snakes.
Panting, they slumped against a dusty old wall, finding it funny that they the snakes had decided to attack the cyclops instead of them, they probably decided it was more meatier and had less weapons that they could use to kill the slithering reptiles.
"Who-are-you?", he asked pausing from time to time to catch his breath. Vince ran a hand.over his messy hair and wiped away the sweat from his forehead, exhaustion clear in his eyes.
"Kim",she said, dropping her golden dagger, making it clatter to the ground. "Kimberly Sanchez"
"I'm Vince", he greeted wiping his sweat off with his hand. "Vince Winston"
"Nice to meet you", she said and winced when she saw the wound on her hand.
"Here",he said and pulled out band aid from his pocket. Since he didn't have anything to clean the wound up, he used a handkerchief from his pocket to wipe away a bit of the blood.
He was pretty sure he wasn't doing it right. But at least he tried.
His specialty was stabbing dummies and giving black eyes to people, not healing wounds.
"I'll do it", Kim said, giggling as she saw his failed attempt to help her. She ran her hand over her wounded one and for a moment, it started to heal. It was halfway done when she stopped.
"This'll have to do", she said, wincing. "I can't waste using more of my energy"
"Woah....", he muttered and shook the surprise off his face. "I'm guessing you're a demigod then"
"Um, yeah, duh"
Vince rolled his eyes."Don't sass me",he said more intimidating than he intended it to be.
The black haired girl hugged her knees to her chest, as she looked away, slight fear in her eyes. "S-sorry"
His face softened at the girl's fright and he lowered his voice. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you"
"I-It's alright", she said, and blinked back tears.
The son of Ares panicked. Why was she crying? Did he do something wrong? Did he hurt her? Did he scare her?
A million negative thought ran through his head, and it worsened when he heard her choke back a sob.
"Oh gods, please don't cry", he said and tried to awkwardly comfort her. He didn't wrap his arms around her because, heck, all he knew about her was her name. So he just patted her back awkwardly. "I'm sorry for whatever it is I did. Just please don't cry!"
Kim rubbed her eyes that were tinted red and sniffed. "N-no, it's not your fault, it's just that... I know what this place is"
Vince nodded grimly, "The Labyrinth"
Kim's expression darkened, "I read about this place....and as far as I know, it's almost impossible to get out. And I just--", she choked, and Vince waited for her to continue. "I'm just worried if I can ever get out"
The Greek demigod's face softened and he tried to speak in his most soothing voice, but that was hard. He was used to scream motivation speechs to people, which may or may not include death threats and such. But never had he ever tried to encourage a girl so fragile. The girls he knew were stone cold and tended to speak with their fist, not their mouths.
But this... It was like holding glass, a wrong move could send it shattering to a million pieces, injuring him too.
No wonder a lot of boys were single, a lot of girls were just hard to talk to.
"Hey", he said, mustering a not-too loud voice, "It's gonna be okay, I'll help you out. We'll be fine"
Kim looked up at him, her green eyes searching his face for any signs of lying or doubt.
"You sure?"
"Yeah"
"Promise me", she said, holding up her pinky. "Pinky promise"
Vince snorted and blew off the bangs on his face. "What are you, five?", he said, scowling.
The determined expression on her face surprised him a lot. For a second, he could see a soldier in her, a flicker of a well trained warrior inside the body of a frail girl, waiting patiently to be released.
"Are you going to promise me or not?",she asked, in a firm voice.
He could do nothing but promise her, sealing their deal with two entwined pinkies.
Their weapons lay on the floor, the faint glow casting a thin blanket of yellow light to coat the walls and the floor of the dusty corridor.
"I guess I need to tell you a bit of information about me", Kimberly said, smiling.
"I guess so"
"Daughter of Hecate, third cohort", she said making him blink in surprise and confusion.
"Um... Son of Ares"
She frowned, her eyebrows furrowing adorably. "Don't you mean Mars?"
"The planet? Or the chocolate?",he asked, frowning.
"Um, no, the god"
"Oh... You mean the Roman version of Ares?", he asked, eyebrows furrowed. "Nope, I mean Ares, not Mars"
Then noticed a tattoo in her shoulder, he frowned even more.
"What's that?", he asked, pointing to the tattoo on her shoulder. It looked like it got burned on her skin instead of painted on. At least that's how he thought tattoos we're done.
Two torched crossed over 'SPQR' and one vertical line was bellow it. It wasn't fancy or anything, it was simple yet weird at the same time.
She furrowed her eyebrows at him in confusion. "What kind of Roman are you?"
"What? Roman?", he asked, baffled. "No, I'm American, though a bit of Asian, though I'm also son of a Greek god but---"
"Greek god?!",she repeated, surprised. "I'm the daughter of a Roman goddess, Trivia--er, Hecate"
"What?! That's not possible!"
"Of course it is! I'm a demigod!"
"Yeah, a Greek one. You're not Roman lol. That doesn't exist!"
"I'm Roman demigod! And of course it exists!"
"You must be delusional, I'll take you back to camp"
"But I just came from Camp Jupiter to New York---"
"Camp what?"
"Huh?"
"Did you just say Camp Jupiter? Don't you mean 'Camp Half-Blood?"
"What? What is camp half-blood?"
"Um, the camp for half-bloods duh"
"But there's only one camp for half-bloods, and it's Camp Jupiter"
"Wait... You don't mean... "
Questions started buzzing in their heads. Then they realized what this meant. Connecting all the puzzle pieces and linking the information's, they had reached an answer, which was both unbelievable and believable at the same time. All that they ever known had been false, theories appeared in their minds and everything they thought they knew, changed.
What if there was not only one camp. But two?
What if there was not only one version of the gods but another?
Greek and Roman!
Their eyes darted to their weapons.
One gold knife, one bronze sword.
Both different metals.
But both shining as brightly as the other.
Both waiting for them to use them against a possible enemy.
They stared at each other one more time, before grabbing their weapons and running away from each other.
Kim to the left, and Vince to the right.
Once they were sure they were far away from each other, they slumped against a nearby wall and clamped a hand over their mouths which were open in shock.
What have they just discovered?
They had to get back to camp.
They had to warn them.
Warn them that there was something else other than them.
Warn them that these people, might not even be on their sides.
With a determined expression, they rose from their position and started running in different directions.
They had to get out of there.
They had to escape.
But somewhere inside them, they were knew, that there was a low chance of them surviving.
Especially when you're trapped inside an endless thousand-year old maze designed to kill anyone who dares to enter this death trap.
But little did the two demigods know, there was a goddess looking down at them, a pleased and wicked smile on her face as she saw them run away from each other.
But no matter what they did.
Their paths were destined to cross.
She had made sure of it.
