Chapter 4

"So, where are we going?"
"I'm going for a walk through the forest."
"I hate going on walks though....." he stretched the "o" for a couple seconds.
"You get to listen to my music if you come."
His eyes immediately lit up. I smiled and handed him one of my AirPods, playing my favourite playlist. We walked for a few minutes, me singing along with the songs and him just listening and humming along if the tune was consistent, sometimes even softly singing along.

We both zoned out for awhile, and eventually we had come to the edge of the forest, leading out to another street, this one was obviously abandoned and was ready to be demolished. All the houses looked either burnt or like whatever was holding them up had fallen.
"Oh we are SO exploring these. Let's start there." I pointed to the largest house that still looked to be mostly held up.
"Race you there!" He immediately bolted away, getting a few seconds of head start. I ran after him as quickly as I could, but he was definitely at least twice as quick as me. By the time I got there, he was already exploring inside. When I walked in, a shiver ran down my spine.

Everything was dark and there was dust and abandoned things everywhere. Lots of rubble, presumably from the higher level. I glanced around, but I didn't see anyone. Fukase was probably checking one of the rooms. I decided to check around too. It was a pretty normal house, the main room used to be a living room, and there was broken stairs to the second floor. But that was almost completely destroyed. I decided to go to what seemed to be a study. It was a pretty beautiful sight.

Despite the rubble and abandoned objects, there was a relatively unharmed bookshelf. A few shelves had novels, some had files, and some even had CDs and vinyls. I took a few CDs with old bands I liked, and vinyls with nice covers, and put them in my bag. Thank god I brought it. Then I started looking through the files. They seemed to be for some tests. Results for different chemicals and reactions. But one set caught my eye. There was a group of notebooks with names on them. Only about ten. My curiosity got the best of me and I started looking through them. None of them were recognizable or even similar to any names I knew, until one.

My eyes widened and I put the others away. I quickly checked both covers. There was some scratches, and a small water stain that conveniently ruined the name of whoever was writing them. It seemed to be intentional since it was on all of them and only ruined the cover.

"Yo, Len. I'm bored. What did you find?" He walked in casually. I quickly grabbed my bag and hid the notebook out of his sight, I didn't want to cause him flashbacks, but I really wanted to read it later.
"Hey Fukase, look, I found CDs on the shelf." I opened my bag, showing the ones I was taking.
"Oh hey, there's some files-"
"Don't look at them!" I quickly cut him off. "They seem to be related to your... uh... pre-death. I don't think you'll like them." He looked surprised, then looked closer at it. He stepped back, then started rubbing his arms. It was like a rush of cold ran over him.
"Are you okay? Do you want to leave?" I put the notebook in my bag while he wasn't looking, then offered a hand.
"Please..." he took my hand, squeezing it tightly. I carefully led him out of the building and we walked back through the trail. He seemed to get tired halfway through, and he leaned his head on my shoulder. It was sweet. I put my arm around him, in case he fell asleep. Why do ghosts even need sleep? He doesn't need anything else. He doesn't even need to eat.
"Mhhh... Len... 'm tired... w'na sleep..." Fukase mumbled into my shoulder.
"Want me to carry you?" He just nodded in response. I carefully put my arm under his knees and lifted him up. He fell asleep pretty quickly after that. And not too long after that I had brought him to my room. Luckily my parents weren't home yet, so I didn't have to explain why I was carrying nothing. I carefully left Fukase on my bed and sat down on my chair, digging through my bag until I grabbed the book.
