Chapter Twenty-Two

"...She should regain her strength any moment now. You were wise to bring her here."

My ears were ringing, and my head was spinning. I barely had any energy to open my eyes. I squinted them, trying to see where I was.

"Zelda? Oh, thank the goddesses!"

I felt someone's arm under my neck, and their hand resting on my shoulder. They gently lifted me off of the ground. I held my right arm over my eyes.

"Who...?" I mumbled, my throat dry. I coughed a few times.

"You better give her this now," a voice spoke. Someone's hands were holding mine, and they placed a cold, glass bottle in my hands. "Drink up."

I slowly pressed my lips to the cold glass, sending a shiver up my spine. I began to drink the liquid. Whatever it was immediately boosted my energy, and my eyes had fully open now.

A tall woman floated off of the ground before me. Her hair was bright pink, and severed into three ponytails. Vines encased her body, yet not all of it. Her presence made me a bit uncomfortable. The vines on her body did not cover much. She had long, claw-like nails, that were painted pink. In addition, she wore pink eyeshadow, and as well as her fingernails, her toenails were pink as well. She had piercing purple eyes.

Just like mine.

She cackled. "Ah, the poor dearie! She has finally opened her eyes!"

"Who... Are you?" I coughed once more, finishing the drink.

"She goes by the name of the Great Fairy," I heard Link's voice from behind me, who was presumably holding me up.

I nodded gently, a warm smile spreading across my face. "Did you... Heal my leg?"

The Great Fairy held her hands on her hips, a courageous expression plastered on her face. "Of course I did, my sweet! I healed your nasty leg wound, and even replenished your magic and energy!"

I gasped. "You..."

Link stood up, pulling me up with him. "Yup! She gave us more magical strengths, meaning we can stay in the past a bit longer."

I squinted my eyes, just as I had done before when I regained consciousness. "And you trust her?"

The Great Fairy erupted with laughter, flying backwards. "Sugar, I supply Hyrule with its magic! Especially magic for that of the royal family, which you are apart of."

I looked at Link, then back at the Great Fairy. "I cannot thank you enough for your help."

The Great Fairy held out her arms. "Oh, darling, it's no trouble at all! This is what I am here for!"

I smiled. "We are eternally grateful for your help. Thank you."

The Great Fairy gestured to the exit of the small enclosure we were in. "Now you two loves better get going, lest you let Hyrule fall into despair."

I shook my head. "That won't happen."

The Great Fairy closed her eyes. "I trust that you two are strong enough."

Link took my hand. "Let's go!"

I laughed. "Okay, Link, slow down!"

We both began running to the exit, when the Great Fairy gasped.

I slowly turned back towards her. "Is something the matter?"

She shuddered. "Did you just say... Link?"

I blinked a few times before nodding my head. "Y-Yes, I did. Why?"

The Great Fairy backed away, still in midair. "Oh, no."

"What do you mean, 'Oh no'?" Link asked, stepping forward.

"You're the hero..." she stated, holding her hand up to her mouth. "Link, the Hero chosen by the Gods."

Link nodded. "Well, I guess so, since everyone is saying I am," he chuckled.

The Great Fairy waved her hand. "Quickly! Run into the small bath of water. Thrust your hand into the purified water. I need to... See something."

Link nodded, raising his eyebrows. "Alright...?" Link's hand fell out of mine as he walked over to a small body of water the Great Fairy was floating above. He pushed his two hands under the water. When he pulled them out, his left hand began to glow golden.

The Great Fairy gasped once more. "So you really are the Hero...!"

I stepped over beside Link. "Did something happen?"

The Great Fairy turned away. "You have to promise me to not lose faith after I tell you this story..." She floated down to the floor quickly, waltzing up, inches between our faces. "Promise me!"

Link and I nodded our heads. "We promise!" We said in unison.

The Great Fairy sighed. "It is a story of tragedy and deep sorrow..." she looked at us, frowning sadly. "...And you two are the center of attention of this story."

Link gulped. My legs felt weak.

The Great Fairy continued. "As you may know, the evil doer by the name of Ganon sent the land of Hyrule into ruin, aiming to kill anyone and everything in his path. He murdered without hesitation, and destroyed without mercy." She turned around, holding her right arm out to her side. "Ganon possessed the Triforce of Power, one of three of the sacred triangles passed down from the three goddesses, Nayru, Din and Farore. The other pieces of the Triforce were passed onto the Hero, chosen by the Gods themselves. A small, orphaned boy by the name of Link, and the heir to Hyrule's throne, Princess Zelda."

The Great Fairy paused, slowly walking into the body of water in front of her. Her feet sank into the water, up to her ankles. She inhaled deeply, a small smile spreading across her face.

"Link," she continued, "possessed the Triforce of Courage. Princess Zelda, the Triforce of Wisdom."

Suddenly, my right hand began to glow golden. Like the Great Fairy spoke of, three triangles were glowing on my hand, one glowing brightest of them all. Link's hand did the same.

"However!" The Great Fairy yelled, balling her hands into fists. "Not all can triumph over evil. Not all stories have happy endings." She sighed, falling to her knees. "Link... You were killed in the final battle against Ganon."

My heart stopped beating. My eyes widened.

"No..." I whispered, holding my face in my hands. "That can't be...!"

The Great Fairy nodded. "After Link's death, Zelda, you were so devastated that you took your own life."

I gasped. Link took my hand and squeezed it tightly.

The Great Fairy turned and faced us once more. "You cannot, under any circumstances, let that happen again!"

Link and I nodded. "We won't," I stated.

The Great Fairy held her hands over her chest. "You see, although Link was killed, he did a great amount of damage to Ganon. He concealed himself, only meaning to for a hundred years." The Great Fairy pushed her hair off of her shoulders. "The Sages and I, with our power, were able to seal him off for almost four thousand years. Hyrule, with its remaining population, began to grow again."

"Wait..." Link paused, holding out his free hand. "What time is it here? How long has Ganon been sealed away now?"

The Great Fairy smiled. "Now? It hasn't happened yet. Ganon will attack Hyrule in five years."

I shook my head. "How do you know all of this?"

The Great Fairy walked over to me, pressing a hand against my cheek. "Darling, the Sages and I can see into the future. We already knew you two would come back in time to retrieve your weapons to defeat Ganon in your time."

I felt tears come to my eyes, but I quickly wiped them away. "Why haven't you warned anyone?! If you know, then you should be able to do something to save the people...!"

The Great Fairy folded her arms. "It is a terrible taboo for beings like I who can see into the future, to tell others about events that shall occur..."

"What will happen if you tell people?" Link asked calmly, holding a hand on my back.

The Great Fairy shook her head. "The Sages and I have no clue. No one has dared to say anything to anyone about the future before."

"But," I began, "aren't you telling us about the future right now?"

The Great Fairy smiled. "You two already know about the future. You know about the destruction that will fall before Hyrule." She stopped, frowning. "You two already know..."

Link held out his hands, smiling nervously. "Yeah, we do know," he looked at me, winking. "But Zel and I are going to save the future."

I had a sinking feeling in my stomach. "Wait..."

Link turned towards me. "What is it?"

I looked at Link, then at the Great Fairy. "What if we just stop Ganon in this time period? Then everyone will be saved, no one will die, and we can ensure the safety of everyone in our time."

The Great Fairy shook her head. "If people survived, then Hyrule could have been able to thrive. People would have children, and they, in turn, would have their children, and on and on. New people would be in your time, and even some will not exist."

"Then, could we bring Ganon somewhere other than our city?"

I looked at Link. He sputtered that last sentence, looking at the floor. He obviously wanted to protect our friends from harm.

And I wanted to protect them, too.

I nodded. "Link's right. I can't-" I gasped, remembering Agitha.

"Don't worry... I feel like I'll see you again," that moment repeated through my head over and over. The moment that Agitha was shot with an arrow, in her back. She had died because of me.

I was not going to let that happen again.

I didn't cry. Instead, I sighed, a smile escaping my lips. "I'll do whatever it takes to protect my people, in this time and the future!" I proclaimed, throwing my fist in the air.

"Zelda..." Link said calmly, looking at me with a smile.

I felt like I had changed. I wanted to become stronger. I didn't want to be a damsel in distress. If something awful happened, I would put on a strong face and would shed not a single tear.

I was going to protect my best friend.

I was going to protect Agitha.

No matter what it took, I was going to protect her.
