Chapter Twenty-Five

My eyes slowly fluttered open. My heart was beating at a steady pace. I breathed slowly and silently. I smiled, looking at his face.

Link laid down right beside me. I guess we must have both fallen asleep after what happened earlier, I thought to myself, admiring his peaceful face. I tried hard not to squeal; Link looked so adorable as he slept!

I realized that one of his hands were under my neck. We were pretty close to each other, too. I laughed ever so quietly, blushing just a bit. I remembered getting tired after crying for so long, that I must have fallen asleep beside him.

Link's eyes opened slowly, and he smiled. "Good morning, princess."

I stuck out my tongue. "Good morning, hero."

Link chuckled softly. He moved his hand from underneath my neck, then closed his eyes. He stretched out his arms, then sat up. He propped his body up with his elbow, looking down at me. I held my hands under my head, yawning.

"So, what's on the agenda today?" I asked.

Link looked to the left, then he laughed. "You mean tonight?"

I sat up. "Oh, by the goddesses, you have got to be kidding me..."

Out of the window above the bed, the dark night sky was filled with thousands upon thousands of sparkly stars.

"We slept through the day," Link sighed, "and now we're up at night. This is just-"

"Fantastic," I said sarcastically, interrupting Link.

"That's exactly what I was thinking," he laughed. He fell back down on the bed, laying on his stomach. He laid his arms under his head. He groaned. "This isn't good for my sleeping schedule."

I nodded. "Same goes for me." I paused, looking around the house we were in. It was very open. "By the way, who's house are we in?"

"Mine," Link said bluntly.

"Ha," I laughed once. "For a second there, I thought you said this house was-"

I stopped, looking at Link, who turned around to look at me.

"How is this your house?!" I demanded, shaking Link's shoulders. I gasped. "Did Ilia give it to you? Oh, I swear-"

Link laughed loudly. "Oh, are you jealous of Ilia? Princes Zelda of Hyrule, envious of another...?"

I punched Link's back. "I am not envious of her!" I rolled my eyes. "Anyways, did she give this place to you?"

Link didn't answer.

I slowly leaned in towards him. "Did she...?"

Link shook his head. "It was mine..." he said quietly. "The me of the past..."

I grinned. "That's amazing..."

Link nodded. "I know, right?" Link smiled, looking around the house. "The guy had pretty great tastes in décor, too."

I laughed. "Yeah, I guess so."

Link sat up, stepping off of the bed and onto the floor. "How are you feeling?" He asked me, pulling off the blanket that was still lying on top of my body.

I looked down at my leg, the corners of my lips turning to a frown. I reached my hand out to my calf, barely grazing the top of the bandages. I slowly unfolded them, taking my time. Link watched as I held the full bandage in my hands. I squinted my eyes, slowly turning my leg over.

My whole calf was red, blue, black and purple; a disgusting mix of colors. I winced, turning my leg even more. A large hole went through the middle of my calf. The skin was still raw and a bit damp from the blood that had spilled out uncontrollably form before. It was hard to control my breathing. My thoughts were swirling throughout my mind.

I was eating myself alive.

Zelda, come on! My mind scolded myself. Link needed you and you let him down. He won't be able to find his weapon now, all because of you. This is your fault! Why do you always ruin everything? Go back to your own time, you useless freak!

"Zelda!"

I blinked a few times. I slowly looked back up at Link. He looked worried.

"Yeah?" I asked calmly.

"You zoned out for a moment there," Link told me. "Are you okay? You wouldn't answer me."

I pressed a hand to my forehead. "I-I'm fine, really. Just a small headache is all."

Link sat down on a chair a few feet away from the bed. "Does it hurt?"

"Huh?"

"You're leg, dummy," Link smiled.

I nodded, my monotone expression making Link's smile fade. "It hurts to move."

Link's smile returned as he held out his hand. "Let's go downstairs and see if I can help any, okay?"

I took his hand, nodding. "Okay."

Link stood on my left side, and my arm was slung around his shoulder.

"Agh...!" I clenched my fists. I couldn't bend my knee, or else I would cause pain in my calf. "It hurts..." I groaned.

Link nodded, placing me back on the bed. "Since there are only ladders here, I can't carry you in my arms," he said. "Do you think you can get on my back?"

I wanted to roll my eyes as I felt my face grow warm. "Uh, I guess I could..."

Link smiled. "Okay, just get on whenever you're ready."

I nodded, watching as Link turned around, kneeling down to the floor. I leaned forward, gripping his shoulders. I moved onto his back, and he stood up, moving his hands under me.

"Are you alright?" He asked, turning his head back a bit.

"Mhm," I answered. I yawned as Link began walking over to the first ladder, climbing down.

"Hold on tight, okay?"

"Mhm," I repeated. "I will."

Link moved carefully down the two ladders. When he reached the main floor, he moved his hands back under my body, hoisting me up. I laughed like a child; it had been years since someone last picked me up. Link smiled as he set me down on a small wooden couch to the side of the house. He propped my leg up on a pillow.

"I'm going to see if there are any more bandages," Link said, turning around and walking to the kitchen. There were plenty of cupboards to explore and search. "I'll also grab some medicine and something to clean your calf out with. There must be something in here."

My head froze, and I couldn't move. "Fifth cupboard to the left, second shelf."

Link slowly turned around and faced me. He stared directly into my eyes. "How did you know that?" He asked, dazed.

Suddenly I was able to move my head again. "I don't know... It just, sorta, came to me, I guess..."

Link nodded his head once. "Alrighty then, fifth cupboard, second shelf."

He walked over into the kitchen, opening the exact cupboard I had told him. Sure enough, on the second shelf, sat a roll of bandages. Link shrugged his shoulders and pulled it out, along with a disinfectant and a bottle of liquid medicine. Link picked up a towel on his way back over to where I sat.

"Roll over on your stomach," he told me.

I groaned. "Do I have to?"

"Do you want me to clean out your wound, Zel?" Link asked, holding the towel close to the disinfectant. He began to pour some onto the towel, regardless of what I had to say.

"It's gonna burn," I whined, turning onto my stomach, lying down on the wooden couch. Thankfully there were a few cushions on the couch, so I wasn't uncomfortable.

Link nodded. "Yeah, it will." He paused, hovering the towel over my calf.

I turned back toward him. "Are you okay?"

Link held out his hand. "You're going to need something to take the pain out on."

I smiled weakly. "Don't come crying to me when I break your fingers."

I gently placed my hand onto Link's, and I wrapped my fingers around the back of his hand. I braced myself for the pain that was sure to come.

And it had.

Link slowly placed the towel on my calf, and I immediately screamed. The pain surged through my leg and up my body. It was unbearable; worse than anything I had experienced before. The only other pain that rivaled this one was when I first met Midna in her true form; her hand through my chest was not pleasant.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," Link apologized quickly.

"Don't... Don't apologize!" I breathed heavily. I felt bad for his hand; I was gripping it pretty hard.

"Squeeze harder if you need to," Link advised, and I did so as he began to move the towel around my calf. I could hear the sizzling of the disinfectant running through my calf.

As quickly as it began, it stopped.

Link tossed the towel off of my leg, quickly grabbing the bandages and wrapping up my wound. Since I no longer had his hand to squeeze, I buried my face in a couch cushion, screaming harder than I had ever before. I kicked my left leg up and down.

After Link finished bandaging my leg, I lifted my head from the cushion, gasping for air. "That hurt like hell!"

"Watch your language, Zelda," Link laughed. "And yeah, I figured it would hurt."

I sat up, propping my leg back onto the couch cushion. I sighed a heavy breath of relief, happy that the pain was gone.

"What now...?" I muttered, looking at Link. He sat on the floor in front of me, his legs crossed and his hands in his lap.

"I don't know," Link said, cracking his fingers.

I winced.

"Oh, right, I forgot you hated that," Link said, shaking his head. "I'm sorry."

I cringed. "It's alright, I just hate the sound."

Link's raised an eyebrow. "Do you know why you hate it so much?"

"I don't know," I lied.

Although, I had known.

_______________

The dream had reoccurred many times throughout my childhood. My mother died shortly after I was born, and my father left me to my aunt and uncle. I never saw him again. I felt like the dream had something to do with my father, however.

I just never really knew why.

It began to appear in my dreams every once in a while, ever since I was eight years old. I haven't had the dream in a few months, however, but I could easily recite what was said, and what had happened.

I was running. There was some boy by my side, and he was gripping my hand. We ran through two large doors, and I was crying. I turned around, and two men with blurred faces were fighting. Then, the taller man snapped the other man's arm. A loud crunching noise resounded throughout the area; even when the door had slammed shut behind us.

After that, the cracking noises continued.

Every morning after that dream, I woke up, out of breath, drenched in sweat.

I never knew why, or what relations I had to that dream.
