Chapter Twelve

"We're in Hyrule... Aren't we?" Link asked, admiring the giant castle.

Midna nodded. "We are. However, this is just like a hologram; we can't interact with anyone in this time period."

Link smiled, and he began walking towards the castle.

I, however, backed away. I had a terrible feeling in me. My dress suddenly disappeared from my body, changing my clothes back to my shirt and skirt. My hair fell down at my sides, and I wasn't able to see. I frantically searched my pockets, and was glad to have found a pair of glasses. I slipped them on and watched as Link moved closer to the Castle.

"Midna," I began, "can we go home?"

Link turned around and stared at me, and Midna did the same. "What do you mean?" She asked. "You don't want to stay and see everything?"

I shook my head. "I really don't."

Link laughed. "Zelda, this is amazing. Why don't you want to-"

"Just let me go home."

Link's smile faded, and he looked at Midna. "Alright, Midna. Could you possibly take us home?"

Midna shook her head sadly. "I cannot. You must witness, first hand, Hyrule Castle, it's glories, and everything..." she paused for a moment, staring at the castle. "...everything else."

I began backing up farther. "I can't stay here," I spoke my mind. I had a horrible feeling. "I'm leaving."

Midna held out her hand. "Before-" she stopped herself, looking at the ground, then lifting her head back up to face me. "Listen, Zelda. Won't you want to investigate Hyrule Castle Town? Maybe you'll recognize someone." She smiled. "Anyone. From your time period, or this one."

I stopped backing up, and looked at Midna. "I feel like... I can get us there."

Midna beamed. "Really?!" She ran over to me and took my hands. "Try it! Maybe you can use your magic to get us into Hyrule Castle Town!"

I flashed a nervous smile. "I-I don't know if I can, though."

Midna winked. "You won't know unless you try!"

Link ran beside us. "Yeah, Zel. I believe in you."

I smiled bravely, and nodded. "Give me your hands. You two- hold onto each other's hand as well."

Midna and Link nodded, holding hands. They both reached for my right and left hand. I took a deep breath, closing my eyes. I sighed, feeling a surplus of energy grown within my body.

I took a deep breath, my stomach churning as I strangely remembered an incantation. "Nayru, Goddess of Wisdom, direct us into Hyrule Castle Town!"

I saw a flash of blue emit from the area. My whole body felt light as a feather, as I felt my feet lift from the ground. I clenched my eyes shut as best as I could. I couldn't let go of Link or Midna's hand, so I was unable to shield my eyes from the light. I looked down, praying that everything was working as it should be.

When my feet finally touched the ground again, I opened my eyes.

We were surrounded by bustling people.

A wide grin spread across my face. I spun around, looking at every nook and cranny in the small town. I quickly ran around with Link and Midna chasing after me. Just as Midna had said, we were practically invisible to all the townsfolk. No one was able to see us.

I watched a little boy ran over to his mother, laughing with a loaf of bread in his arms. The mother smiled, wrapping her arms around her son, patting him on the back.

I turned and saw an old couple walking down a small path together. I was able to float right through them. I watched in front of them as they hoarsely laughed and talked.

There was a sign, however, that caught my eye. It was hanging above a door to a small house, and on it was a purple butterfly. Curious, I walked through the door, amazed at what I saw inside.

There was a giant tree growing in the middle of the house. A small kitchen was in the back right corner, along with a table and a short stool. Books littered the floor and other desks around the house. I smiled, looking at all of the different kinds of bugs on the tree.

Agitha would absolutely love this.

I climbed a small ladder that led me to the second floor. I noticed a short girl laying on her bed in the back of the room, next to a jar with a beetle inside.

I laughed, the girl reminding me of Agitha.

I made my way over to her side, sitting on a chair beside her bed. The little girl laid on her stomach, so I wasn't able to see her face.

I giggled, watching as she rolled over on to her back. She stretched out her arms and sat up beside the jar with the beetle.

My smile grew wider.

"Good morning, Flippy!" She laughed, pressing her face up against the jar. "Do you know what day it is?"

She paused, as if she waited for the bug to answer. I laughed.

"It's my birthday!" She said happily, hopping out of bed with the jar in her arms. "I'm seventeen, starting today. That means you have to treat me like an adult now, y'hear?" She laughed, descending down the latter carefully.

That little girl... Seventeen? I thought, following after her. No way. That can't be.

Her hair was pulled up into pigtails, and her blonde hair rode down her waist. She had a dress covered in sequins of bugs and sparkles. Her shoes matched her dress. They were all crazy looking colors.

"How do I look, Stacy?" She asked, walking over to the giant tree. She was talking to a butterfly that laid up against the tree. It fluttered its wings a few times. "Oh, what a lovely compliment!" The girl laughed.

I couldn't help but laugh along. "She can understand bugs?" I asked aloud.

The girl froze. She barely turned her head. "Excuse me?"

She ran up to her kitchen and took a pan in her hands, holding it above her shoulder.

My eyes widened. I thought Midna said all people would be unable to see or hear us!

The girl spun around and stared me right in the eyes. She walked over to me, inches in front of my face. She may have been a few inches shorter than me, but she looked scary.

"Who said that about my hair?" She asked with a frown on her face. "Don't think I won't squish you!"

I snorted, holding my hands over my stomach. I began laughing, tears forming at my eyes.

She smiled, whipping the pan around her finger. "Yeah, don't mess with me-" she stopped when the pan hit her cheek. It fell to the ground with a loud clatter, and she held her hands over her face. "Ow!"

I gasped, running beside her. I inspected the wound on her cheek, and a bit of blood spilled from it. She quickly cleaned up her cut with a small bandage and some water. When it was patched up, she smiled proudly. I giggled, sitting down on a chair.

She looked at the bug-infested tree. "Y'hear?" She laughed. "Don't mess with me."

I smiled, watching as the girl began picking up bugs and holding them in her hands.

"Zelda..."

I looked up. Had someone just called my name? I thought, looking around.

"Zelda...!"

I stood up just as Midna and Link ran through the door of the house. They ran beside me, and Midna had a worried expression on her face.

"What's the matter?" I asked.

"We're..." Link began, looking at me. "We're running out of time."

I shook my head. "W-What?" I looked at Midna. "Aren't we supposed to stay here for some time? Isn't it required, like you said?"

Midna nodded. "Yes, but we must leave Castle Town now."

"Why now?" I looked over at the girl, watching as she began cooking her dinner, humming a cute tune. I pointed to her. "She's special, I know it."

Link chuckled. "She sure is."

I hit his arm. "Link!" I yelled.

He frowned. "Okay, okay!" He sighed. "I'm sorry."

"Enough bickering!" Midna cried, tugging my arm. "We need to leave! Now!"

I hesitantly shook my head. "I-I can't leave this girl!"

Link took my hand. "She isn't important, Zelda!" His expression turned sad. "Come on, we have to leave quickly, like Midna said!"

Midna already flew out the door. I looked back at the girl. She had pulled her pigtails out, and her hair fell at her sides. She turned around, and I gasped, feeling my knees becoming weak. Link stopped pulling me and let me be.

My eyes filled up with tears. "Agitha..."

Agitha turned and faced me. She gasped, and bowed. "P-Princess Zelda!" She stuttered, looking at the ground, barely moving.

I looked at Link worriedly, then back at her. "You..." I watched as she stood back up. "You can see me?"

She laughed. "I never saw you enter." She shook her head immediately, bowing again. "S-Sorry for being informal, your majesty!"

I smiled, shaking my hands. "No need to be formal, Agitha."

Agitha looked up. "You know my name?"

I nodded. "Let's just say..." I looked at Link and smiled wider, then faced Agitha once again. "I've seen you around town, and I really admire your bug collection."

Agitha beamed. "Really?"

I held her hands. "Really, I adore them all." I looked down at her dress. "Your dress is absolutely lovely as well."

Agitha couldn't smile any wider. "Everyone in town says that my dress is strange, and that my big collection is 'unnecessary'..." she frowned for a second, before looking back up at me, and her smile returned. "But when I tell them Princess Zelda complimented my dress and my bug friends, they'll all eat their own words!"

I nodded, laughing. "Agitha, you do not have to call me 'Princess.'" I giggled. "'Zelda' is just fine."

Agitha jumped. "I get to call you by your name?"

I nodded.

She began laughing with a huge grin on her face. "This is the best day ever!"

My eyes began to water. "Yes, it is."

Link took my hand. "We have to go, Zel..."

I shook my head. "Just a moment..."

Agitha cocked her head to the side. "Who're you talking to?"

I laughed nervously. "Just to myself, that's all!"

Agitha nodded. "Oh, alright."

I sighed with a sad smile on my face. "Agitha, I have a very important..." I paused, searching for the right word to say. "...Meeting. I'd love to stay..."

Agitha's smile faded, but she shook her head and giggled. "That's okay! I'm so lucky to have seen you." She closed her eyes with a smile. "I mean, hardly anyone ever sees you anyway, right?"

I nodded sadly. "You're right."

Agitha let go of my hands, backing away from me. She bowed, quickly straightening herself. "I shouldn't be so formal, should I?"

I shook my head. "Don't worry. It's okay to be informal sometimes."

Agitha nodded, holding her hands behind her back. "Okay."

I began backing away slowly. I looked at Link, then at Agitha. "You... Can't see Link?"

Agitha shook her head. "Link? You mean, the supposed Hero?"

I nodded. "You can't see him?"

Link placed a hand on my shoulder. "I'm not important to her. You are. That's probably why she can't see me."

"Uh..." Agitha squeezed her eyes shut, opening them again. "Link?"

Link laughed nervously. "You can see me now?"

Agitha nodded. "You... Put your hand on Zelda's shoulder, and..." she shook her head. "What's going on?"

I smiled. "Uh, you see-"

Midna ran into the house. "What're you doing? Let's go!"

Midna grabbed my hand, and Agitha gasped. She looked mortified, backing into the corner of her house. "W-What are you?"

Midna looked at me. "She can see us?!"

I shrugged my shoulders. "I don't know how it happened, but-"

"Can someone please explain?!" Agitha yelled.

I saw her eyes tear up, and it broke my heart. I didn't want to make her cry.

"Agitha, I'll explain some other time-"

A loud crash was heard outside.

"We need to leave now!" Midna screamed. She held up her hands and cast a spell on my body. I floated up in the air. Agitha watched in terror.

Link ran out after us, and Agitha followed as well.

"Zelda, listen to me," Midna said quickly, breaking the spell and letting me stand alone. "We need to leave Castle Town, as quickly as possible-"

Another loud crash was heard, and smoke came up from the ground a few miles away.

Midna looked at me desperately. "Now! Use your magic and get us out of here!"

"What's going on?" I asked.

Midna began crying. "Gannon's attack!"

I gasped, grabbing onto her and Link's hands, pulling them out into the middle of the town. Agitha ran after us.

I turned around. "Agitha, please, run back into your house!" I paused as a house was demolished right before me. "Go, now! It's not safe!"

Agitha shook her head. "Zelda, I feel weird!"

I couldn't help but smile. "What do you mean?"

She shook her head helplessly. "I don't know... Honestly, I just feel like I've known you all my life!" Tears formed in her eyes. "Please, don't leave!"

'I have to go,' I mouthed to her.

Agitha froze in the middle of the town, screaming citizens running all around her. I gasped, looking up at the sky. Monsters rode on the back of huge birds, shooting arrows from their bows.

As Link and Midna pulled me forward, I lunged back towards Agitha. "No!" I screamed, holding my arm out to her.

I watched as her eyes lost their beautiful pink color. Her smile faded as she fell to her knees, still looking at me. She fell onto her stomach, revealing the large arrow sticking out of her back.

"Agitha!" I pushed Link and Midna off of me, running back over to her. She laid lifelessly on the ground. She even tried to sit herself back up, grunting as she held her arms out in front of her, pushing up with every last bit of energy she had left within her.

I kneeled beside her, laying her head in my lap. "Agitha..." I whispered, tears streaming down my face. "Please, don't die..."

She smiled weakly, holding one hand up into the air. "Z-Zelda..." She managed, coughing.

I held a hand to her cheek. "Yes?"

"Don't worry..." she sighed. "I feel like... I'll see you again..."

I nodded. "You will, Agitha! You will! And we will become the closest of friends...!"

Agitha closed her eyes.

"A-Agitha...?" I held my head over her chest, hearing the faint thumping of her heart. I listened as it slowly faded away.

I laid her head onto the ground, Link quickly pulling me up. "We have to go!" He said, running over next to Midna.

I held their hands, mumbling the incantation I remembered from earlier. The same flash of blue covered my sight, and when I felt my feet land on the ground, I gasped, opening my eyes and letting go of Link's and Midna's hand.

Off in the distance was Hyrule Castle, burning in the twilight.

My heart beat faster with every crash and explosion. With every blink of my eyes, I saw Agitha's dead and lifeless body.

As Midna raised her hands, a flash of orange surrounded Link and I.

"Midna, what're you-" I began, when my voice froze and my body stopped moving. Midna disappeared, as did Link, and I was left alone.

Another flash of orange.

I closed my eyes, praying for this to all be over. When I opened my eyes once again, I was in the dirty room where Midna and I fought.

I slowly landed on the floor, landing with my hands in my lap. Link ran beside me, and Midna came up from behind.

"Zelda, Link," she said, looking at us horridly.

"W-What is it...?" I muttered, staring at her.

"Instead of bringing you to the holographic version of Hyrule..." she looked away in shame. "I brought you back in time."

"What?!" I screamed.

Agitha was dead.

She had died in the past.

Because of me?!

Link held my shoulder. He looked at Midna. "So, did that change anything... You know, in the future?"

Midna shook her head. "I don't believe so. No one interacted with anyone..." Midna stared at me. "Except for Agitha."

I shook my head. "I know she's alright, I just know it..." I held my hand over my head. "But, if she died in the past, because of me..."

Link looked at me sadly. "Zelda, no-"

I looked back up at him. "Then, if time is repeating itself in this period, then I'll be the reason... If she..."

Link shook my shoulders. "Zelda, no!"

I stood up, running to the other side of the room. "Then, in this time, she'll also die, because of me...!"
