Chapter Thirty-One

Link's POV

I couldn't believe it.

Two girls, supposedly dead, sat right in front of me on Zelda's front lawn.

"Oh no, Agitha," Midna began, ending the silence, "you were dragged into this?"

Agitha nodded sadly. "No need to worry, though! It'll all work out in the end, I'm sure."

I looked over at Midna. "So, how are you here?"

Midna grinned. "My brother... He used our tribe's magic to take me to the Twilight Realm and to heal me..."

"Brother?" I asked. "Do we know him from school?"

Midna shook her head quickly. She drew in a quick breath. "He believed I was the Midna. Y'know, the one in the past. But I wasn't. I was Midna from the future." She paused, closing her eyes. "Nonetheless, he saved me, and I am eternally grateful for his help. He didn't care if I was his Midna or future Midna, he wanted to help."

I couldn't help but smile. "If we ever see him, we'll have to thank him."

Midna nodded. "He was very kind."

I stood up. The warm afternoon sun cloaked my body in warmth. I closed my eyes, immediately thinking of Zelda, and how just an image of her calmed me.

Agitha pushed me. "Link! Link, snap out of it! We need to go rescue Zelda!"

By now, Agitha was vigorously shaking my shoulders. "Alright, alright!" I yelled, trying to compose myself after Agitha's attack.

Agitha, standing proudly after snapping me out of my daze, stuck out her tongue. "Well, now that we have Midna, we can go back into time and save Zelda!"

Midna frowned. "I-I..." she stuttered. I looked at her. She looked weak and helpless, which was crazy. Midna, the strong, sarcastic, kind-yet-harsh girl, shivering. Her eyes drooped downwards, and a tear fell from her cheek. "I don't have that power..."

I stepped forward. "What? But you took both Zelda and I in the past!"

Midna lifted her head, her eyes level with mine. "You don't understand!" she proclaimed, her hands against her chest. "That was a few days ago! I'm out of power, and I don't even know if I can transport us back there again..."

My eyes widened, and I froze where I stood. "Meaning..."

Agitha shook her head slowly. "It can't be..."

It grew silent, and the area around us became tense. My knees became weak, and I felt like I was about to fall to the cold, hard ground. No, Zelda... I felt the hot tears blur my eyes. I couldn't see. I quickly wiped them away before the girls saw them.

Zelda... I miss you.

"Aren't you all supposed to be the heroes? The heroes that rescue the princess? Pathetic! Do not loose hope!"

All at once, Midna, Agitha and I gasped, looking upwards.

"That voice..." I spoke aloud. The voice of an old woman. It sounded so familiar...

"Come on, hold your heads up high! Show Ganon who's boss, and kick his tan behind high above the clouds!"

Agitha snickered. "Who's voice is that?" she asked, suddenly erupting in laughter.

Then, like she had almost a month ago, she had appeared right before the three of us.

This time, she was no longer a transparent hologram, but a real, living human, just like Agitha, Midna and I.

"Impa, right?" I asked, watching as the old-looking woman floated to the ground in front of us. Her feet planted onto the ground, and she placed her hands on her hips. She smiled proudly.

"I haven't time-traveled like that in a long time," she heaved, breathing heavily. "Oh, boy, what a rush!"

I couldn't help but smile. "What are you doing here?" I asked. "Shouldn't you be in ancient Hyrule, preparing for the battle against Ganon?"

Impa waved her hand. "Oh, Link, don't worry about it. I just came here to help you all."

Midna shook her head. "Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait!" She barged in, holding out her hands. "Who is this old lady? Link, don't you think Agitha and I deserve a formal greeting?"

Impa gasped. "Old?" She grunted. "I'll have you know I am only thirty-six years of age, so ha!"

Midna rolled her eyes. "Alright, whatever. Your voice sounds familiar, though. Who are you?"

Impa crossed her arms across her chest. "Who do you think told you to bring Link and Zelda to that dungeon a while back?" She asked, inching closer towards Midna. "Who ordered you to fight Zelda for her to gain the use of her sword?"

Midna's eyes widened. "You're that cranky old crone who wouldn't stop yelling at me!"

Impa gasped once more. "What the-! I'm in my thirties! I'm not an old crone!"

I stepped between the two. "Alright! Let's get back to the topic at hand!" I turned to Impa. "Why are you here?"

Impa, her eyes flaring red, scowled. "Ganon has captured Zelda, as I'm sure you all are aware." She looked up at the sky, clenching her fists down by her sides. "He has been putting dark thoughts in her mind, making her believe that her friends have turned on her."

Agitha stepped closer to Impa and I. "What?! No! I love Zellie! I would never turn on her!"

Impa nodded. "That's exactly my point. You all love Zelda, correct?"

"Yes," Midna, Agitha and I answered in unison.

"Well, Ganon wants Zelda to believe you all have been consumed by darkness, leaving her all alone." Impa closed her eyes, clenching her teeth. "I'm supposed to be her bodyguard... Her protector... Yet I couldn't save her...!"

I placed a hand on Impa's shoulder. "Don't worry, Impa," I said reassuringly, "we'll get her back. I swear on my life, we'll save her."

Impa smiled. "That is exactly why I have come here today."

Midna cocked her head to the side. "Why's that?"

Impa smirked. "You aren't able to use your magic, Midna, because you are still recovering. Is that correct?"

Midna nodded. "Yes, it is."

Impa held up her hands, now glowing a purple color. "I have come to assist you three, since Midna is unable to use her magic."

I smiled. "You can take us to Zelda?"

Impa nodded. "Yes, I can. Now, you three, stand in a circle and hold hands..."

We did as we were told, and Impa crawled into the middle of us. She began chanting an old incantation. She closed her eyes, then horrifically opened her eyes. Her red eyes burned, causing the entirety of her eye to become a dark crimson color. She screamed, and Agitha closed her eyes. I did the same, hoping I would be able to see Zelda.

It'll work, I thought, holding my head up high. Don't worry, Zel. I'm coming.

______________

"Link, wake up!"

I began rubbing my eyes, yawning. "What? Where am I?"

My blurry vision cleared, and I saw Agitha lying over me. "Wake up! We're here!"

She moved away, and I sat up, seeing Midna in front of my body. Midna turned and faced me. "He's up?"

Agitha nodded. "Yup!"

I held my head, a sharp pain causing my ears to ring. "Where are we?"

Agitha smiled. "Impa transported us to Ganon's underground castle." She sighed. "We'll be able to find Zelda, but we don't exactly know where to start..."

I stood up, looking around the dark room we were in. "We better hurry. Ganon may be able to detect our presence."

Midna nodded once. "You're right, Link," she began walking down a darker hallway. "I have a feeling this is where she is... It's a start, so we might as well try."

"Alright, I'll follow your lead." Agitha stood behind me as we followed Midna down the hallway.

"This place sure does give me the creeps..." Agitha mumbled. She suddenly pulled a small, blue beetle from her pocket. "It's okay, little buddy! We'll be alright!"

I tried to keep myself from laughing. Why did she have a beetle with her? I shook this off, continuing to follow Midna.

Suddenly, Midna took off down the hallway. Agitha gasped, and I ran after her.

"What do you see?" I tried to call to Midna as quietly as possible.

When I reached where Midna stood, I froze, just like she had. My eyes widened.

"What?" Agitha came crashing into me. "What is it? Is Zellie here? Where is she-"

Agitha stopped talking.

Before us looked to be a prison cell. There were cracked wall pieces inside. A small twin bed was lying to the right side of the room. There was a torch to the left. But hanging in the very back of the room was Zelda's dress.

Princess Zelda's dress.

"He couldn't have..." Midna croaked, holding her throat. "He... He didn't kill her..."

Tears quietly streamed down Agitha's face. "Where is she...?"

I fell to the floor, reaching my hand inside of the cell. I took ahold of a cracked piece of stone. It obviously acted as a wall of some sort, but it had been obliterated in an instant.

Midna tried to open the door with her weak magic, but to no avail; her magic was still frail and powerless. "No, no, no..." she began hitting her hands against the bars of the cell. "No! Why won't my magic work...?!"

I stood up. "There's no way Ganon could have killed her..." I helped Agitha off of the ground. "She has to be somewhere in here."

Midna nodded. "You're right. We have to keep looking."

As we began walking down a separate hallway, we heard a loud crash, and Agitha fell to the floor in fear.

"Get out!"

Her voice rang through my ears. It was, without a doubt, Zelda's voice.

My frown turned to a smile in an instant. Midna looked at me, grinning brightly. Agitha immediately jumped off of the floor, running out in front of us. She bolted down the hallway, following the voice. She stopped in front of a doorway, obviously nicer-looking than the prison cell we had seen before.

Agitha slowly pulled the door open.

"I told you to leave-"

Midna stepped inside before me, and I waited in the doorway.

"Agitha?" I heard her say.

I closed my eyes.

At the moment, just hearing her voice was enough.
