Chapter Thirteen
I laid in my bed for the next five days.
Skipping school was big for me. I never did it unless I was sick or really, really tired of the bullies that specific day. Regardless, I had missed five days.
This was going to totally kill my grades.
Agitha and Link called, and texted me, numerous times throughout the day. Even Midna began checking on me as she realized I had been missing school. After we visited Hyrule, I hadn't been able to think straight. What good is it to go to school if you can't think straight?
Plus, I couldn't even look at Agitha.
I had to stay away from her.
This was the only way to protect her. My lovable, cute and hilarious friend Agitha.
I couldn't stop thinking about her.
I laid in bed each day, completely monotone. I never texted Link, Agitha or Midna. I never answered their calls or called them back. I didn't dare invite Link or Agitha over.
I felt as if I was slowly killing myself. I hardly ate. Link would always text me and ask me if he needed him to cook me some food, or to bring anything over. I never even replied, and I felt horrible for doing so.
I just wanted to be left alone.
Was I really going to be the reason why my best friend would perish?
I hate seeing Agitha cry. I hate being away from her so long. I just couldn't handle seeing her. If I stayed away from her, until this fight was over, then she would most definitely survive.
Ring, ring, ring.
Yet another call from Link.
I rolled onto the other side of my bed, groaning. He left a message, and I heard his voice again for at least the twenty-fifth time this week.
Yet, he sounded different.
"Zelda, please," he began after my phone beeped. "I miss talking to you. Can I come and visit? I would really like to have a conversation with you." He paused, and a soft laugh escaped from him. I slowly rolled my head to the side, eyeing my phone. "I know you don't want to talk to, or see anyone..." I heard him sigh. "I just really want to talk to you. I hope you give it some thought. Let me know as soon as you can..." He paused again, and he seemed like he was about to say something else, when he stopped himself. "Just, please... I want to see you again."
Beep.
He hung up.
I lifted my arm over to my bedside drawer. I picked my phone up, hoping I wouldn't drop it. My fingers gently wrapped around my phone, and I pulled it over to my body. I quickly called Link back, hoping he would pick up.
"Zelda?" He asked, unsure if it was really me or not.
I smiled softly. "Yes," I said hoarsely. I coughed. "It's me."
I could tell Link was grinning. "Do you mind if I come over to check on you? And, I mean, I just want to say hi, too."
I laughed quietly. "I guess that would be a good idea."
Link chuckled. "Alright, I'll be over in like ten minutes, if that's okay."
I yawned. "Yeah, that's fine."
"See you in bit, then," Link concluded, hanging up on his end.
I sighed, setting my phone down on my bedside drawer. I slowly pushed my heavy blankets off of me. They've never felt heavier. I hung my legs over my bed, stretching my arms once more before standing up.
"Woah," I mumbled, almost falling onto the ground. My legs were wobbly and weak. I felt like I had to go back and lay down in bed, but I shook my head. I needed to get up and go downstairs. The last time I got out of bed was five days ago. After coming home from our visit to Hyrule, I brought some pre-made sandwiches into my room for something to eat, and a few bottles and cans of soda and water. I haven't left my room, or my bed, since.
Ever so carefully making my way downstairs, I found myself breathing heavily. Why were the easiest things I could usually do on a regular basis so challenging? I felt completely drained of all of my energy. When I sat down on a stool in my kitchen, I found myself lying my head on the table in front of me. I could hardly breathe.
"What's... Wrong with... Me?" I questioned myself breathlessly. I yawned again, tears forming at my eyes. One slipped out, sliding down my cheek and splashing onto the table. I sneezed.
Link better hurry...
My heart skipped a beat when I heard a knock on the door. I pulled myself off of the table, sliding off of my stool. I grabbed anything I could - I held onto the banister at the steps as soon as I made my way over there, trying to keep myself off of the floor. Link must have came here pretty quickly after I finally allowed him to. I walked over to the door, falling into it. I grabbed the doorknob before falling, and I slowly opened it.
Link smiled. "Ah, Zelda! It's so good to see you-" his smile turned to a frown when I fell to the floor.
I cried out in pain, touching my legs.
"Zelda, what's the matter?" Link asked, bending down beside me. He closed the door behind him.
I shook my head, laughing nervously. "I don't know. My legs are super weak, my head hurts, I'm tired, and I feel like..." I stopped, trying to pick myself up. "...I feel like I don't have any energy to do anything."
Link picked me up off of the floor suddenly, walking over to my family room. He set me down on the couch. I was used to him picking me up randomly; he did it a lot. I laughed quietly.
"I... Don't feel sick," I stated, looking at the floor.
Link nodded, touching his hand to my forehead. "You're not hot. Maybe you are just drained from everything going on."
I took a pillow from the other side of the couch. I pulled my legs to my chest, laying the pillow on the top of my knees. I laid my head down on the pillow, as well as my arms. I closed my eyes. "I'm so tired."
Link smiled. "You sure do look tired."
I stuck out my tongue. "So how are things at school?"
Link sighed, leaning back against the couch. "Nothing, really. Our soccer season ended yesterday, we won championships-"
I sprung up from my seat. "I'm sorry I couldn't come!" I apologized. "I was still tired, and-"
My legs began to give out.
"W-Woah-" I said, trying to balance myself.
Link leaned forward. "Zelda? Are you okay?"
I shook my head, and I fell. Link held out his arms and caught me. I fell into his lap, my eyes still clenched shut. I slowly opened them. Link was smiling softly.
"Are you alright?" He asked, placing me back onto the couch.
I nodded, my face probably red by now. "My legs hurt," I whined.
Link chuckled. "It'll be okay."
I rolled my eyes. "I don't know..."
Link leaned back against the couch, looking at me. "You know, I think you should go to the doctors-" Link stopped himself when he remembered my past. "Never mind. I'll help you as much as I can, though."
I nodded. "I'm grateful for your help, so thanks."
Link wrapped his arm around my shoulders. He helped pick me up, walking me over into my kitchen. "Do you have a pair of crutches?"
I shook my head. "No, I don't."
Link snapped his fingers. "I have a pair. Would you like to use them?"
Before answering, I laughed. "Wait, why do you have a pair?"
Link crossed his arms, leaning against the kitchen counter. "I sprained my ankle really badly as a kid."
I frowned. "Aw... I feel bad for laughing before..."
Link sighed. "Yeah, but it's whatever at this point." Link then shook his head. "Oh, and don't worry about it. To tell you the truth, I sprained my ankle tripping over a soccer ball." He laughed himself. "And then I told everyone at school that someone kicked me," he whispered.
I stifled a laugh. "Aw, Link."
Link smiled. He walked me over into my kitchen, setting me on a stool at the table. I watched as he walked over to the cabinets. He took out a small rag, and ran it under the sink water. He set it down for a moment, running back into the family room. I stared in front of me. What was he doing? I thought. I didn't even have any energy to turn my head around.
I was suddenly enveloped in a warm and fuzzy hug. I looked over my shoulder, and saw Link with a big grin on his face. He had a blanket around his arms, surrounding me. I laughed.
"This'll warm you up," he said happily, wrapping the blanket around my back. He stepped back to the cabinets, taking the rag in his hands and squeezing out the access water.
I smiled, blushing like crazy. I pulled the blanket over my shoulders, snuggling into the warm fuzz. Link returned with the cold rag in his hands, and he gently held it against my forehead. I laid my head against the table once more, before he did so.
He laughed. "Does this help any? I'm not a doctor or anything, but I hope this at least makes you feel better."
I giggled. "Yes, this definitely helps, Link." I looked up at him and smiled. "Thank you."
Link laid his arms on the table, leaning his head on them. He looked at me and smiled, too. "No problem, Zel."
I closed my eyes. About a minute passed, and I opened my eyes.
Link was staring at me with a smile on his face.
My face felt hot. "What're you looking at?"
"You, dummy," Link chuckled.
My eyes widened quickly, and I turned my head around to the other side. Link laughed.
I yawned. After a little while, I turned and faced Link again. His eyes were closed, but as soon as I turned around he opened his eyes. He laughed.
Without thinking, I moved my stool closer to him, throwing the blanket over him. I laid my head closer to his. I stared into his eyes, and he stared back at me. I stuck out my tongue, closing my eyes again.
He laughed. "You better not be sick."
I gasped, opening my eyes. "For the last time, I'm not sick!"
Link smiled. "Well, you better not be."
I sat up suddenly. "I'm not-"
My stool shook under me, flipping off to the side. Link gasped, grabbing my arm. He slipped off of his stool, falling with me. I closed my eyes, preparing myself for the pain I was going to feel in a bit.
Link slipped his hand behind my head. He wrapped his other arm around my back.
It seemed like forever had passed before he lifted his head up from the floor. Link looked at me worriedly. "Are you okay?"
I shook my head, sitting up and putting a hand on his shoulder. "How about you?"
Link laughed quietly, holding up the hand that was behind my head. "I just hit it against the floor, that's all."
I took his hand, holding it gently. "I'm sorry, if I wasn't so clumsy..."
Link shook his head. "Don't worry about it. It doesn't even hurt that much..."
I quickly squeezed Link's hand, and he winced. "I'm sorry! But, see? You're lying!"
Link smiled awkwardly. "But it'll heal up soon. Don't worry about it, Zelda."
I frowned. "So you get to worry about me like crazy, but when I worry about you, it's bad?"
Link looked at the wall, avoiding eye contact. "Well, I'm... I don't know."
"Ha!" I said, pulling Link off of his feet. I took the rag he gave me earlier and wrapped it around his injured hand.
He smiled. "Zelda, really, I'm fine-"
"Nope," I said bluntly, pulling his arm over to the couch. He tripped behind me, following me.
"Z-Zelda, what're you-" Link began, when I threw him on the couch. I threw the blanket on him, hopping beside him. I pulled it over us, snuggling into his shoulder.
I laughed. "There. Now you can rest your hand, and I can rest my legs."
Link rolled his eyes. "Whatever, Zelda." He chuckled. "Why're you so weird?"
I shrugged my shoulders with a grin. "Dunno."
Link leaned his head on mine and sighed. "Man, I wish this was all over and done with."
I nodded. "Me too."
Link smiled, looking down at me. "You know, you're really lucky to be able to use magic."
I closed my eyes and yawned. "Yeah, yeah. It's so tiring, though."
Link nodded. "Yeah. I wish I could help you with that."
I frowned. "I don't think you could do anything."
Link smirked. "Could I?"
I looked at him. "What?"
Link leaned in, pressing his lips against mine. A wave of warmth flowed through my whole body. He held my head in his big hands. I felt like I was regaining all of my energy that I had lost. We both closed our eyes, getting lost in the kiss. I had wrapped my arms around his neck, causing the blanket on Link's shoulders falling down to the ground.
When Link finally pulled away after what seemed like forever, he smiled, pushing some of my hair out of my face. "Did that help?"
I grunted. "You got me there."
Link laughed, leaning back up against the couch. "I'm a pretty helpful person, you know."
I rolled my eyes. "Stop."
Link looked at me. "Stop what?"
I stared out in front of me, not daring to look him in the eyes. I knew my face would get red if I did so. "Stop being cute."
Link chuckled. "Wow, I think that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me."
I nudged his arm. "Shut up." I leaned my head on his shoulder, finally closing my eyes again.
Link smiled. "Glad I could help."
I yawned. "I said shut up. I'm going to sleep."
Link laughed softly. "Alrighty."
I snuggled into his shoulder more as he wrapped his arm around my back. Link pulled the blanket back over us, and he leaned back against the arm of the couch. We laid there for a little while, when I felt myself slowly drift away. Keeping my eyes closed, I smiled, remembering the feeling of Link's lips against mine.
We both fell asleep on the couch, for almost five hours.
