My eyes opened slowly. I sat up, looking straight ahead of me. I turned my head around.
"Where...?" I whispered.
The room I was in was gigantic. Painted on the walls were beautiful golden and white colors. I looked down at the bed I was laying on. There were four poles supporting the top of the bed, fit for a princess. It was all black, except for the bedsheets and pillows, which were white. I slowly pulled the covers off of my body.
I was wearing a long white nightgown.
My eyes suddenly filled up with tears. "Where am I?" I mumbled, getting off of the bed and walking over to a tall golden mirror. I stood in front of it, looking at my different features.
My brown hair before was fairly long, now it was tied up into three strands: two in the front, and pulled into one large ponytail in the back. It seemed a bit shorter, but not by much. My lips were a shade lighter, a light pink color. I seemed a bit shorter, and my whole body just felt smaller.
I held my face in my hands. "Where am I?" I repeated again.
"Zelda!" Someone called behind my bedroom door. "Your father would like to see you for a moment, so you best get ready for the day! I laid out a nice dress on your dresser!"
"My dresser...?" I looked behind me, and next to the giant bed was a brown dresser, bigger than any I had ever seen before.
"Yes, ma'am! Meet your father in the dining room, please!"
I slowly made my way over to the dresser. Lying beside it was a small desk. On top of it was a beautiful purple and white dress, rimmed with shiny gold strands. There was some symbol - an emblem - patterned on the front of the dress, and two strands on it as well. Without thinking, I slipped out of my nightgown and into the dress. It felt so comfortable, and fit perfectly. I walked back over to the mirror and admired the beauty of the dress.
I slipped on a pair of long brown boots beside the desk. They fit perfectly as well as the dress. I gulped.
This is so strange.
I made my way over to my door, and held my hand out. I reached for the golden knob when my heart froze.
A loud crash was heard from outside. I quickly ran over to a door I assumed to be a balcony, and I was correct. I threw open the glass door and ran to the balcony's edge. I looked down.
I was far from the ground.
"Where am I!" I screamed. Looking around, I seemed to be inside of a castle. I was going mad.
I looked out in front of me, and down in a courtyard below, small goblin-looking creatures were attacking soldiers. I watched as the soldiers were overthrown by the goblins.
My bedroom door slammed open.
I turned around. I began crying. "Link..."
Link ran over by my side, pulling me back into my room. He shut the door. I looked at him, very confused. He was wearing a green tunic, and a long, green hat. "Princess, what are you doing?! It's dangerous!"
I shook my head. "Link...?"
Link nodded. "Yes, Princess. Are you okay?" He moved around me. "Did you hit your head and get amnesia?"
I rubbed my eyes. "W-What's going on?"
Link scowled. "Ganon. He's back, and he sent his army of Bokoblins and Moblins to kill the soldiers."
"Who is Ganon?" I asked.
Link squinted his eyes at me. "Are you sure you're okay?"
I began crying again. I took Link's hand. "Please, just tell me!"
Before Link could speak, someone was at the door.
I gasped.
It was the woman I saw.
"Impa!" Link said, running over to her.
The woman, Impa, looked at me with a crooked smile. "Ah, so she's here."
Link cocked his head to the side. "Did I miss something...? You two are acting quite strange."
"Nothing is wrong, Link," Impa said, looking at me. "I assure you that."
Link nodded. "Right."
I stepped in between the both of them. "Can someone please explain what is going on?!"
Link took my hand. "We have to go. Now."
I looked at Impa. "Take her somewhere safe," she said.
Link nodded. "Of course."
Link pulled me out of the room. I hesitated, staring at Impa. She just stood still.
Link began moving faster by the second as we walked down the the halls of the castle. He pulled me along while I quickly admired the paintings of what looked to be previous kings and queens of this castle.
"Come on, Princess!" Link called behind him. "We have to hurry!"
It finally hit me. "Wait, princess?"
Link stopped suddenly, and I ran right into him. I had realized he had a giant shield on his back, because I bumped my head right into it.
"Ow..." I let go of Link's hand and held my head.
Link turned around. "Are you okay, Princess?"
"Don't call me that!" I said, trying not to cry. "Where are we? Why do you and I look so different?"
Link held his hand to my forehead. "I think you might be sick, Princess."
"Zelda!" I corrected, taking his hand and pushing it off of my head. "It's Zelda! It always has been!"
Link chuckled. "I know that's your name, but I'm obliged to call you Princess."
I hugged him tightly. "As a request from me, can you just call me Zelda?"
Link hugged me back. "Okay, if you say so."
We pulled away, and Link smiled. "Now, we have to go, before-"
There was another loud crash. The walls of the hallway began caving in, and parts of the walls began flying everywhere. Link grabbed my forearm and pulled me violently down the stairs.
"Where are we going?" I yelled to him.
"To your father!" He yelled back.
"My... Father?"
Link began moving faster. "Princess, hurry up! You're slowing down!"
I couldn't wrap my mind around the dire situation I was in. A minute ago, I was in my bedroom, with Link and what seemed to be a holographic image of Impa. Now I'm in a random castle, right when it's being attacked?
Worst of all, my father was dead. There's no way he could be here.
Link grunted. He turned around and picked me right up off my feet. He held onto me tightly as he picked up his pace and ran down the hallways even faster than before.
"Duck your head into my chest!" He ordered me. "Cover your neck with your hands!"
I did as I was told, shielding my neck from any flying debris. My heart began pounding once more. It seemed like Link was running for forever. When he finally stopped, I slowly emerged from my secure position. We were in a room much bigger than the bedroom I was in. It had a long, large table in the center, with plates and silverware neatly placed on top. At the very front of the table was a tall man.
"Zelda!" He called to me, running up besides Link and I. "Oh, how glad I am to see you."
Tears welled up in my eyes.
He looked exactly like the man I saw in pictures that my aunt and uncle had.
"F-Father?" I whispered, reaching my hand out to him. He took it and embraced me in a hug.
"Yes, Zelda, it is me. There is no need to worry about Ganon." He looked up at Link. "Our hero will take care of that problem."
I pulled away from my father suddenly, and turned towards Link. "Our hero...?"
Link smiled and rubbed the back of his neck. "Well, yeah, I was chosen to save Hyrule."
"Hyrule..." I mumbled under my breath. "Why does that sound so familiar...?"
My father and Link looked at me strangely. Link leaned closer to him. "I think she hit her head this morning."
My father nodded.
Link shrugged his shoulders. "Okay, you two, get out of here." He nudged my arm. "Hey, take care of your old man, will ya? We need someone to rule afterwards, and you're no where near as good a ruler as your father."
I didn't smile. I only cried. "You jerk!" I said, hitting his chest with my fists. "You can't leave me now! I still don't know what's going on!"
Link smiled, wrapping his arms around my back. "Don't worry, Princess, your father will explain everything."
I gripped his tunic. "I said to call me Zelda, you idiot!"
Link chuckled sadly. "I'm sorry, I forgot."
Link laid his head on mine. Time seemed to freeze. I moved my hands from his chest to his back.
"Don't leave me," I cried. "I need someone to stay with me."
"Your father is with you, silly," Link smiled again.
I began sniffling. "B-But I want you to stay with me."
Link pulled away, his hands still resting on my back. "Hey, I'm the hero. I need to save our kingdom." He winked. "Your kingdom."
I began crying harder as he pulled away.
"Goodbye, Princess."
I watched as he ran out two large doors at the other side of the dining room.
"No!" I screamed, running after him.
My father gasped from behind me. "Zelda, no!" He yelled.
I looked up to my right, and falling down at me was a giant part of the ceiling. I held up my right arm, trying to protect myself. I knew I was going to die at that moment. There was no way of stopping it.
Link turned around and saw me, standing helplessly under the crumbling ceiling. "Princess!" He screamed, running back over towards me. He jumped onto me, pushing me out of the way. He landed on top of me, and the giant piece of the ceiling crashed to the ground.
Link slowly lifted his head off of the ground. He looked at me and laughed. "You dummy," he said, pushing hair out of my eyes. "I guess I'll have to stay with you, before you kill yourself on accident."
He helped me stand up, and my father ran beside us. He was now holding a sword.
"Get out of here, now," he said strictly.
Link shook his head. "Your majesty, I'm not leaving you here."
My father shook his head, pushing us to the exit of the room. "He's here."
At the entrance, a tall dark figure was walking towards us. Link stood in front of me protectively, holding out his shield and a shiny silver and blue sword.
The tall man chuckled darkly. "So the Princess is still here, eh?" He walked toward my father, and I gripped the back of Link's tunic. "I'm going to have a much better time killing you all, now that she's still here."
"Get her out of here!" My father called behind him. "He will kill her if he gets the chance!"
Link lowered his sword. "We can't leave you!"
"You can, and you must!" My father called back.
Link stepped closer to my father. "The Queen died when the Princess was born. We can't lose you, too!"
My father looked back at me and smiled. "You have her."
"But she has never ruled before!" Link protested.
My father stepped closer to the dark figure. "Please, just save her..."
I felt a strange feeling of déjà vu. I heard this before, some other time.
Link gulped, taking my hand and running out of the room.
"Wait, what?" I yelled. "We can't leave him!"
Link frowned. "It is my duty to protect you, Princess."
"Zelda!" I yelled. "And I don't care! I lost my father once, and I can't lose him again!"
Link and I ran out of the dining room. I looked behind me before the doors closed.
My father dropped his sword and held his hands out to his sides, accepting the figure's attack.
"No, don't!" I screamed. The door closed before I saw anything else.
Link pulled me over into the kitchen. He poured water over a small fire under a cauldron. He pulled it out from the fireplace and pushed soot and burnt wood aside, revealing a small passageway.
I stood in the middle of the kitchen, my hands over my mouth. I tried to stop the tears, but they fell regardless of my attempts to stop them. I began hiccuping.
Link jogged over to me, hugging me. "Look, it's okay-"
I pulled away. "He's dead!"
Link looked at the floor, ashamed. "He ordered me to-"
I interrupted him again. "I don't care! He's d-dead because we couldn't... We couldn't..."
Link took my hands. "Look, Princess, I'm not letting his death go to waste." He pulled me over to the passageway, pushing me down on to a ladder. He pointed down. "Now there's a small tunnel. There should be a lantern on the side that you can take to light your way."
I giggled nervously. "Why are you telling me this?"
Link pushed my hands off of the top of the floor, and I fell backwards. I screamed, catching myself on the ladder.
"Someone has to save the kingdom."
I climbed back up. "No!" The tears began falling again. "You can't leave me!" Before Link could put any wood back on the passageway's door, I pushed it open, face to face with Link.
He smiled, placing one of his hands on my cheek. "Your father wanted me to protect you. This is the only way to do that, Zelda."
I smiled. "You finally called me Zelda."
Link moved his hand to the back of my neck, placing his lips on mine. We stayed there for what felt like ages, when he pulled away smiling. "I've always wanted to do that."
I began crying again.
"No, don't cry!" Link said, moving back towards me. He hugged the top half of my body, as much as he could, because the other half was under ground.
"I can't help it," I laughed sadly. "I don't want you to get hurt."
Link pulled away. "I'll come back to you, I promise."
I held out my pinky finger. "Promise?"
Link, smiling, wrapped his pinky around mine. "Promise."
I slowly lowered myself underground, watching as Link placed burnt wood on to the fireplace once again. I slowly climbed down the ladder, and when I finally touched the ground again, I looked to my right and picked up a small lantern. I lit it with a match that sat beside it. The tunnel was now lit up, and I could see the dirty and dusty walls, lined with unlit torches.
I walked for a few minutes before hearing another loud crash. I spun on my heels, facing the entrance of the tunnel.
Dust flew down from the secret entrance, and a body with it.
A body that was Link's.
"No, Link!" I screamed, running towards him. The tunnel started to stretch itself out, and made it seem like I was not even moving. Link moved farther and farther away from me, until he completely disappeared.
I closed my eyes, and when I opened them, there was nothing.
White.
That's all I saw.
I turned around, looking everywhere.
There was absolutely nothing.
"Hello...?" I called out.
I turned around a few more times, when finally, on my tenth turn, standing directly in front of me, in his green tunic, was Link.
"Link..." I cried happily, running towards him.
He turned around and smiled, holding out his arms. I jumped into them, holding onto him and not ever wanting to let go.
I nuzzled my head in his shoulder. "I'm so glad you're okay."
Link nodded. "I'm glad you're okay, too."
I smiled in his chest. "Don't ever leave me."
"I will never leave you, Princess."
My eyes widened, and I slowly looked up at Link.
It was no longer Link I was holding in my arms.
Rather, it was the dark figure that killed my father.
I screamed, running away. "What did you do to Link?"
He chuckled, turning around. When he faced me once more, in his left hand he held Link's body, lifeless and drained of all life.
I shrieked, falling to my knees.

I bolted upright.
"Zelda! Oh my gosh, I thought you died..."
I looked around me.
I was back in my room.
"Link...?" I said, realizing he was holding me in his lap. I blushed, jumping out of his grip and sitting besides him.
I looked up, seeing Impa.
"So, you survived," she stated.
I stood up, Link holding my hand for support. "Yes. Disappointed?"
Impa shook her head with a laugh. "I am your royal guardian, Zelda. I would never wish for your death."
I nodded. "Okay."
"So what did you see?" Link asked, looking down at me and squeezing my hand.
I shook my head, remembering the moment where Link and I kissed. "Nothing important."
Impa shrugged her shoulders. "Those events did happen, almost four thousand years ago."
"Four thousand years?" Link and I both gasped at the same time.
Impa sighed. "Yes. Do you now how lonely, boring and awful it is to wait almost four thousand years for the reincarnation of the Princess and the Hero?" She shook her head. "'Tis very boring."
I giggled. "I would assume so."
Suddenly, Impa's purple light began to flicker.
I reached out for her. "Impa? Where are you going?"
She bowed, smiling. "My job here is done. The rest is up to you two."
I shook my head. "We can't do this without you!"
Impa smiled once more, looking as proud as ever. "The goddesses chose correctly. You two will save Hyrule. You can do it if you work together."
"Impa!"
Then, she was gone.
I looked up at Link. "I have a lot of explaining to do."
Link sighed. "I've got time."

After explaining things to Link, he was astonished. "So... I.... I'm a hero?"
I nodded, moving back and fourth on my bed. "Yup."
He pointed to me, stick his legs out across my bed and his hands behind his back. "And you're a princess?"
"You got it."
"And how do we save Hyrule?"
I shrugged my shoulders. "No idea."
Link chuckled, leaning back onto the wall. "This is insane."
I blew hair out of my eyes and sighed. "Yeah, I know." I smiled. "You know, though, isn't it crazy... We knew each other once? Like, forever ago..."
I stopped when I heard snoring. I looked up at Link, who had fallen off of the side of the wall and onto my pillow. I smiled, slowly getting off of my bed and pulling the covers over his body.
I turned off the lights in my room and closed the door behind me quietly, sliding down the back of the door. I held my knees to my chest.
"This really is insane," I said to myself, dozing off as well.
