One-Shot #14: Claire Brings Home a "Baby"
"Wanda are you home?" Claire asked one day as she came home, her head peeking through the door, a wide smile on her face.
"Yeah, is everything okay?"
"Yeah. Come out here, I got a surprise for you." Claire, still smiling, entered in the apartment and knelt down on the floor, whispering indistinctly before blocking Wanda's view as she came into the room.
"What's going on?" Wanda asked. "You know I hate surprises." She folded her arms across her chest and scowled. Claire came over to her, kissed her cheek, and kept her view hidden.
"What would you say if I came home with a cute cuddly baby?" Claire's eyes held a level of love and excitement that Wanda hadn't seen before and while Wanda wanted nothing than to see her wife happy, she couldn't help the jealousy and insecurity that festered in her chest.
"I...I don't know, Claire. Why do you ask?" Wanda was afraid. She and Claire never once talked about the possibility of being parents; it was always her understanding that they were too young of a couple to even think about that, and that it would happen eventually with enough discussion. They had time, why did she need to rush?
"So, I know we never really talked about this, and I'm sorry for making this rash decision without you, but Wanda, this was a deal that I could not pass up." Wanda raised her eyebrow, her scowl turning into a frown. She sighed an exasperated sigh.
"Jesus Christ, Claire. What did you do?"
"I was walking and saw this cute little baby just sitting on the side of the road. Wanda, I couldn't just leave him there. I looked and asked around to see if he belonged to anyone, but no one knew anything about him. I didn't know what to do, so I brought him here."
"Oh, Claire, you didn't...we never talked about this and we don't have the room..." Wanda tripped over her words and her face reddened. She hugged herself and looked down, trying hard to avoid Claire's eyes, suddenly feeling nervous, embarrassed, inadequate, angry and a number of other things.
"Wanda, please. Just wait until you meet him. You'll fall in love with him, I promise. Please give him a chance?" Claire asked, slightly begging. Wanda sighed and relinquished. Claire squealed and kissed Wanda's cheek before she turned around and went back to the front door. Wanda stuck the nail of her thumb into her mouth and chewed on it nervously. Her heart pounded and her head was starting to hurt. She didn't know what Claire was going to unveil, and what she was most afraid of was hurting Claire. The last thing she wanted to do was to crush her dream—if this was something that she really wanted—and for them to get into a huge fight over it.
Claire came back and before Wanda could open her mouth to question or even protest, a small grey stripped ball of fur was thrusted into her arms. Wanda's eyes widened as the kitten in her arms picked its head up, opened its bright green eyes that scarily mirrored Wanda's and let out a little "mew." Her eyes shot up and looked at Claire incredulously, whose happiness seemed to soar through the roof. Claire was biting her lip and bouncing on her heels. She practically screamed giddy.
The cat in Wanda's arms rubbed its fuzzy head against her sweater and curled in a tight little ball, falling asleep in the warmth that she provided. It purred softly and its little chest rose and fell and Wanda melted. Her face erupted into a huge smile and her eyes watered as she looked back down at the sleeping kitten. She looked back up at Claire and glared at her.
"What's the look for?" Claire asked as she frowned.
"You could've told me it was a kitten instead of scaring me to death," she stated, her voice firm and low as to not wake the fluffy bundle in her arms.
"I wanted to surprise you and what do you mean that I scared you? How did I scare you?"
"I thought you meant a...you know...a real baby! Like a human baby."
"Would that have been so wrong if I meant that?"
"I mean..." Wanda faltered. She turned and walked to the couch in the living room and sat down. Carefully taking the kitten out of her arms and placing it on one of the plush throw pillows, she folded her hands in her lap and sighed. She avoided Claire's eyes again and the redhead noticed and followed after her. Claire took a seat on the cushion next to Wanda and separated her hands, taking one in hers. Wanda looked up at her with fear in her eyes.
"What? Do you not want—"
"No! Claire I...honestly I don't know. We never talked about this and I just...I don't feel ready, at least not yet. I'll get there one day, but for now...can we wait a bit before we start talking?" Claire smiled and caressed her cheek.
"Of course," she said nodding her head. "And I'm sorry for scaring you."
"It's alright." Wanda looked over at the kitten who was now standing up and stretching. It let out another little "mew" sound and clumsily walked over to Wanda and crawled in her lap, purring and rubbing its head against her. "What are we going to name it?"
"I don't know. I found this little guy trying to dig through a trash can and then her tried to pick a fight with a squirrel. He's very..." Their attention was captured by the kitten once more as it started to playfully attack a couple of loose strands on Wanda's sweater and the two of them laughed. "He's very mischievous. He kind of reminds me of Thor's brother from the stories he's hold me."
"His brother's name is Loki right? I think that's a good name for him: Loki." The kitten—now named Loki—settled down once more and looked up at Wanda and then over at Claire, and meowed. The sound was long and exaggerated, sounding almost like a whine. Claire chuckled and stood up from the couch, bending down slightly to scratch the top of Loki's head.
"I think he may be looking for something to eat. Good thing I stopped at the store before coming home." Claire walked over to the front door to where her bag was, pulled out a can of wet food from bag and walked into the kitchen to grab a bowl. She opened the can and dumped half its contents into the bowl. By now little Loki was pacing the floor of the kitchen, meowing loudly and weaving in and out of Claire's legs trying to get her attention. She giggled at him and bent down, placing the bowl on the floor and watching him gobble it up, making a little mess as he went. "Wanda, I think he's got a hole in his mouth," she giggled.
"What do you mean?" Wanda asked as she got up from the couch and walked over to Claire, stepping into her open and waiting arms.
"Look at him, he's making a mess." Claire laughed more and pointed to the small kitten dropping pieces of food on the floor in front of the bowl. Wanda giggled and kissed Claire's cheek.
"He is adorable though. Like you."
"You think I'm adorable?" Claire whipped her head around, a smirk on her face and her brow furrowed.
"Yeah. Of course you are. Especially when your wolf comes out to play." She reached up and booped Claire's nose as she smiled. "I mean that in a good way, not a...murdery rage kind of way. Though I will admit, it is a little cute when you defend my honor." Wanda pulled the back of Claire's neck down by circling around her shoulders and the back of her neck and pressed her lips to Claire's.
Claire smiled and chuckled into the kiss and placed her hands on Wanda's hips. Her fingers shifted until they grazed across her bare skin and pressed into her hips. Wanda hummed and closed her eyes.
Their kiss lasted what felt like forever, and a mischievous thought entered into Claire's head and she smirk. Swiftly, she took a step forward, keeping and tightening her grip on Wanda's hips, and shoved her backwards up against the closest wall. Wanda squealed and her eyes shot open, and when her back hit the wall, she groaned into the kiss. Claire pulled away but stayed close to her, chuckling and resting against her forehead.
"What was that for?" Wanda asked, smiling and trying not to laugh. Claire shrugged and kissed her again, though this one was brief.
"I felt like it. I'm always up for surprising you, babe."
"And you always do. I love you."
"I love you too."
