Chapter Nine
"What do you mean you lost Paige?" CJ questioned, her eyes wide as she, Leo, and Chris stood before the remaining two sisters. "How can you lose a ginger in an attic?"
"I mean, one second she was here, and the next second, poof." Phoebe flailed her arms slightly, just as Piper had begun to speak.
"Well, it kind of happened after she put on a pair of Grams' boots."
Leo's arms were crossed over his chest, looking at his ex wife with a serious gaze as he thought about her words. "Grams used to cast spells on her clothes when she was young."
"Oh, wait, I remember that." CJ nodded, looking at the blond, "She'd invite Reggie and I over for the whitelighter shows."
The Elder cleared his throat, looking back to the sisters as Chris spoke, his hand placed on the black haired witch's waist; "Well, if the boots did belong to your grandmother, then we better summon her from the dead."
...
Paige looked around in confusion and awe as Penny and Robin lead her downstairs; her eyes landed on a familiar duo, "Is that Leo and CJ?"
"You know them?"
CJ's black hair was complimented by a sunflower crown, her brown suede vest had tassels that reached her knees, her plain yellow shirt was tucked into a pair of pale blue bellbottoms, and black platforms shielded her feet.
There was a man to her right; he was 6'4", had shaggy and curly dark brown hair, stubble along his jaw and mustache area, and his eyes were a familiar shade of amber. That must have been Reggie - she understood why CJ seemed to have a thing for Chris, shaggy brunettes were just her type.
...
"You know, if I hadn't taken over Paige's room, this never would've happened. . . This is all my fault." Piper sighed as Phoebe lit the candles to summon Penny.
"What's done is done." Chris and Leo said in unison, causing CJ to snort from Chris' arms; he knew exactly why she was laughing, sending her a small glare as she bit back further laughs. He was leaning against a table, CJ wrapped protectively in his arms as they awaited the séance's beginning.
Phoebe chuckled, waving the lighter at them; "Ok, you two really need to get a room." She spoke, approaching her sister with a smug grin, while Piper nodded in agreement.
"Yeah."
CJ flipped Phoebe off, leaning her head on Chris' chest as Phoebe began reciting the spell to summon Penny.
"Hear these words, hear my cry, spirit from the other side. Come to thee, I summon thee, cross now the Great Divide."
A swirl of lights emitted from the circle of candles, and the one and only ghost of Penelope Halliwell appeared with a smile. "Well, it's about time you called to say hello. Oh, how are my darlings?" She asked, enveloping her granddaughters into a hug; her gaze drifted to Leo, CJ, and Chris, eyes widening at the raven haired witch. "Carina Jordyn Cromwell? Is that really you?"
"Hey, Penny." She smiled, removing herself from Chris' arms (to which he frowned for a millisecond), and hugging the spirit.
The woman's gaze then drifted to Chris, "Oh, you must be Chris, the new whitelighter. . ." She leaned into CJ's side, "And apparently your new arm candy." She whispered, causing CJ to playfully slap her old friend's shoulder; Penny laughed, approaching Leo with a smile.
"Mommy!" A voice rung out from the first floor, causing the ravenette witch to widen her eyes in panic; she looked at Chris, before shimmering from the attic and reappearing in the living room, gasping as she saw her son becoming enveloped by that stupid green goo demon that Chris was telling her about. "Help!"
"Noah, honey, listen to me. Shimmer over here to me, ok?"
"Magic makes it grow, CJ." Chris stated, rounding the corner; his heart sunk as his gaze landed on the four year old, rushing to CJ's side with his eyes slightly widened.
"Chris, that thing is trying to consume my son. We can vanquish it, later." She hissed, before turning back to Noah with a concerned smile, "C'mon, Pumpkin, you've shimmered before. Shimmer to me and Chris, ok?"
"O-Ok. . ." He muttered, unsure of whether or not he could shimmer on command; within a second, he was out of the goo, and in CJ's arms. Chris blasted the thing, and it sunk into the floorboards, only to be seen again some other time.
The little boy was hugging CJ tightly, and the shaggy haired brunette seemed relieved at his safety; he approached them, placing a comforting hand on Noah's back, and another one on the small of the woman's back, "Hey, it's ok. You're ok. C'mon, let's go see Phoebe."
The ravenette nodded, and CJ sent Chris a small smile, "Thank you."
He was about to say "you're welcome," or, "don't worry about it," but was cut short when the woman stood to her toes and placed a gentle kiss to his cheek; he froze for a moment, causing Noah to giggle as CJ carried him upstairs.
A smile slowly tugged at the corners of Chris' mouth, and he released a small laugh, before orbing back to the attic, where Penny was fawning over Noah.
"Is this Reggie's boy?"
"Yeah," CJ smiled, handing him to the woman, "what gave it away?"
"The eyes; that, and your new boyfriend is much too young to- Oh, hello, Chris." Penny smiled, cutting herself off as her hickory eyes landed on the witchlighter over CJ's shoulder.
The ravenette sent Penny a wide-eyed look, spinning to meet Chris with a smile, "Hey."
"Chris? Are you Mommy's boyfriend?"
"Noah!" CJ scolded, shaking her head at the boy with a smile. "No, Chris isn't Mommy's boyfriend. Miss Penny is just being silly." She looked at the spirit, who was smirking, with wide eyes, taking Noah from her arms, and checking her watch. "Oh, look! It's almost nap time. C'mon, lets get you a snack before you take a nap. Sound like a plan?"
The little boy nodded, before they said bye to everyone in the attic; Chris raised an eyebrow at her, a smug grin etching back onto his lips as she passed by, rolling her eyes.
...
"Grams thinks I'm your boyfriend, huh?" He asked, leaning against the wall of the basement, smiling lightly as Noah drifted off to sleep. "Wonder what gave her that impression. . ."
"Oh," the ravenette began, "I don't know. . . maybe she saw you hugging me when she arrived? Or maybe she somehow knew that I kissed you on the cheek? Or, hear me out. . . or Phoebe was bullshitting her."
Chris chuckled, looking to the ground with a smile as CJ threw herself onto her bed; he looked over to her, watching giddily as she opened her book, The Tiger Rising, and began to read. He couldn't help but admire every little detail of her that he'd catch; the way her eyebrows scrunched when she disliked a character or their dialogue, the way she chewed the inside of her cheek as she focused on an interaction between characters, or a detailed description of the land. But, what he noticed most, was the way she'd lick her fingertips to turn the page without struggling.
That detail drove him crazy.
"You're staring, Chris." She droned, her icy eyes never leaving the pages in front of her as he began to walk toward the bed. The brunette threw himself onto the king sized mattress, his hair bouncing as he collided with the pillows; he rolled over to his side, propping his head up with his hand as his face stopped only inches from hers.
CJ chuckled, finally looking up from her book and over at him. "Can I help you?"
"Nah, just watchin'." He shrugged, jade green eyes locked onto her icy ones; they smiled at each other, goofily, before she playfully rolled her eyes and brought her attention back to her book. Chris, enjoying getting on her nerves, ducked his head under her arms and laid his head on her thighs, looking up at her as she read.
"Ok, that's it." She smiled, marking her page, before placing her book on her nightstand; her gaze landed on his face, which was smugly grinning up at her, "What do you want?" She questioned, subconsciously running her fingers through his hair.
"Hm. . ." The man feigned a thoughtful expression, "I don't know. . . thinkin' about what Grams said up there."
"Oh, yeah?" CJ smiled, a strand of black hair falling in front of her eyes; she wasn't going to move it, and Chris didn't want to just yet. "What about it?"
Chris looked into her eyes, his smile slowly dissipating, signaling to CJ that this was serious; her smile vanished as well, and she furrowed her eyebrows in confusion as the silence seemed to haunt them.
"Chris, what's up?"
"Can I take you on a date? Y'know, after we get Paige back?"
