"Camille.. I mean Cami, I absolutely love it! Its everything i've ever wanted combined into one room, how did you both know?!" I embraced Camille into a giant thankful hug, almost knocking the poor woman down.
"I'll make sure to thank Tom when I get the chance later tonight at dinner!"
"Take it easy, take a nap, we can talk more later while we eat spaghetti with.. lots of oregano." Camille giggled sweetly as she patted my back softly.
"Of course.." I nodded, while smiling as she walked back downstairs. Once I was alone I looked back at the pink room, still amazed. It had everything from a lounge chair to a desk I could work on my designs from.
I might as well call Alya and tell her I made it through safe, she was probably genuinely worried. Alya always liked to make sure I was okay, she was technically the oldest sibling to two young twin girls since her sister had moved out. So Alya pretty much had mother figure checked of her list but I never complained because she was just showing that she truly cared about my wellbeing.
Pulling out my phone I went through my contacts and found Alya, I called her and the call wouldn't even go through, thats when I realized that I didn't have a national plan. (i'm not sure how it works don't crucify me)
I decided to take a nap instead and maybe ask Tom if I could call her off of his, later. I wouldn't want to be jet lagged during dinner because being jet lagged, while surrounded by strangers never actually had a good toll on me. I climbed the ladder to my bed and laid on the comfy comforter, letting myself fall into a deep slumber.
2 hours later and I get a small knock on my door, I let myself rise slowly and rubbed my eyes open before talking.
"Yes?" I asked as I began climbing down the ladder.
"Rise and shine girly, Tom's 'fancy' dinner is ready." The door opened revealing Camille who smirked slyly but began cackling when we made eye contact. Without realizing I wasn't technically on the floor, I tried slinging myself off my bed which resulted in me dangling off my bed asking for Camille to help me once I fell. After my incident and a few minutes of Camille and I laughing we both went downstairs, immediately greeted by my dad.
Seems like the ladder that I was so excited about has failed me.
Three plates were already set down on the dinner table and I sat at the end of the table not knowing if I should sit next to Tom, or Camille. The aura was still sort of awkwardly uncomfortable, but even Tom knew it wasn't like I was going to instantly become comfortable with them.
Camille sensed the awkward tension and began a random conversation to clear to air.
"So.. You're probably wondering what all you can do while your here since you don't really know anybody but moi, and Tom! There is the park right next to us which I think is a humble perk, a pool a few blocks down which is open 24/7, ice skating rink which is never crowded, the shop obviously.." She began listing more things but I was already zoned out completely.
"Marinette.. How are you doing after Sabine.. I mean your mothers, death?" Tom began asking me right off the bat, interrupting poor Camille who was still in the middle of conversation, way to set the mood..
"I'll live." I simply answered, not sure if I should open up to technical strangers, maybe soon but I thought the first night was a bit too soon. This man wasn't here for the 15 years of my life, did he expect I was going to open up easily? I sensed Tom beginning to ask a new question but I quickly inputted.
"Thank you for the room, it's absolutely beautiful." I changed the subject, picking at my oregano stuffed spaghetti awkwardly. What good what it be to dwell on my mothers topic, all it was bound to bring to the table were tears.
Plus.. I still wasn't sure if I was ready to hear the truth about my mother, or the reasons she asked me to stay here. It was too soon.
"Your welcome, I was very nervous about if you'd like it or not so this was a big lift off my chest." Tom gave a booming laugh.
Dinner was awkward as I expected it to be and afterwards we all split directions, Camille left to close down the bakery and then go home, Tom began washing the dishes, and I left to take a shower, but right when I was hopping in I heard Camilles voice call out to me.
"Mari!" She knocked on the door.
"Yes?"
"Theres a package that came in the mail today from.. Sabine Cheng, which I figure is your mother right?" Camille asked but I found it weird.. A package from my mom?
"Marinette?" Camille asked and I soon realized that I had stopped answering.
"Uh.. Y..es.. Well, set it on my bed please." I stuttered in shock, as I heard Camilles steps fade.
Once I got out of the shower I walked back to my room, hair in towel and all.
Sitting on my bed was a medium sized cardboard box and Camille was indeed right when she said the sender had my moms name on the box.
I opened the box up and there sat a journal that looked old and dusty.
Lifting it out of the box revealed that it was my moms, but it was one I had never seen before.
I flipped through the pages and noticed a ton of tickets and notes. What caught my eye the most was the photographs.
I picked one up and saw my mother standing in front of the louvre in a white sundress, and straw hat. The next photo was her in a café eating a croissant. Then I went wide eyed with the next photo.
It was my mom.. And Tom.. They were standing on the steps next to the Eiffel Tower. My mom was wearing a bright red lipstick, and had longer hair, reaching her waist, and Tom looked a lot younger without the sideburn, towering over my mom.
I thought about opening the journal to read it but I fought against it.. Not now, I told myself, I wasn't ready for the emotional rollercoaster bound to arrive.
