I Don't Care ⎢Klaroline

"I think this has to do with a certain blonde vampire. I think you think that Caroline's never going to forgive you." Damon was just looking at the Original hybrid with his eyebrows raised, knowing that he was right. The guilt was written all over Klaus' face. He had made the awful mistake of having an affair with Hayley Marshall and now he was paying it for it very badly. As much as he wanted to argue with Stefan's brother, he couldn't. He wasn't sure what to do with Caroline.

Klaus could only think of one thing to do. He had to go over there and apologize himself. Truth be told, he hadn't actually talked to her since the truth came out. Walking up to her doorstep, he took a deep breath and knocked lightly on the door.

"Who is it?" she hollered. However, when she opened her door and saw who it was, her face turned cold. "What is it you could possibly want here?"

Biting down on his bottom lip, Klaus took a moment to collect his thoughts. "I came here to apologize. You have no idea how sorry I am." Looking up, he tried to examine her facial features, but he couldn't. She was still as stone cold as the first time she saw him. "If I could take it all back, I would."

"Yeah, but you can't," she said with a shake of her head. "Honestly, how delusional are you for thinking that would work on me?" After everything had happened with Stefan and Tyler, she wasn't going to come crawling back to everyone right after they apologized.

Klaus couldn't help but smile softly. She was fierce. That was one of the many things he loved about her. Something he always would. He couldn't believe he was this stupid to let her slip away. "Caroline, I love you. You have to believe that." He began to reach out to grab her hand, but she backed away and threw a glare in his direction, causing him to flinch. He knew that he deserved this treatment, but he didn't expect for it to hurt as much as it did. He had never felt more pain in his life.

Looking up, he saw that she had tears running down her cheeks. "I really want to believe you. You have no idea how much I want to believe you, but if you really loved, why would you hurt me like that?"

Klaus was at a lost of words. He had no idea what to say or do, so he did the only thing he could think of at the moment. He locked eyes with her one last time before vamp-speeding away in the opposite direction. Once again, the Mikealson had left the blonde.

A week had passed and Caroline was able to absorb the whole situation. She really missed Klaus more than humanly possible, which was exactly why she was on his porch. She had things to say before she regretted not saying them.

"Please tell me you're not here to rip my head off," he said with a light chuckle. She actually smiled back, which surprised him.

"No, not at all," she said laughing softly. "Actually, I have something to tell you." This was it. This was the moment where she was going to wear her heart on her sleeve. Sighing softly, she looked him in the eyes. "I think we both know I never really hated you. In fact, I love you." All Klaus did was wrap his arms around Caroline. He was afraid that if he did anything else, it would drive her away. The best thing to do at the moment was take everything one step at a time.

'    "You have no idea how happy I am to hear you say those words." The Mikealson was actually being honest this time. He loved Caroline more than words could ever explain. He was just glad that she felt the same way. However, he also knew her, which meant that she would want to wait a little bit before jumping back into a relationship with him.

"I guess I'll see you later," Caroline said, awaiting his response. She had no clue what he was planning on doing today, considering that he was a single man.

"Yeah, love, that sounds great," he said, his smile growing wider. It really did. Klaus wasn't planning on doing anything that he knew of. As of recently, he's just been torturing people and drinking his sorrows away. However, everything changed at that moment.

Caroline was currently standing outside of Klaus' house with Stefan and Elena. She didn't want to do this alone, so she made her two best friends that were also her OTP with her.

It was a good thing too because the next thing that happened absolutely shook the blonde to her core.

"Klaus, the girl is carrying your child." It was the voice of Elijah Mikealson. It took Caroline awhile to figure this out. However, she eventually did and didn't know whether to scream or cry. Hayley. It had to be Hayley. As much as she wasn't true, that had to be the only logical explanation. It was a known fact that vampires couldn't have kids.

All Caroline could do at the moment was fall into Stefan and Elena's arms. They were the two twin pillars that kept her standing at the moment. She cries as Stefan rubs her back, her sobs getting louder.

Caroline wasn't planning on going to the party that night, but her friends were very adamant on her going. They said that it "would be the perfect opportunity to show Klaus what he was missing." Their effect made her smile, which was something she hadn't known since she found out the news, so she went.

It was a costume party and Caroline made the decision to go as a flapper.

It was clear that the whole town was going, but she never expected that she would run into Klaus.

The blonde was planning on talking to him. He didn't know she knew, so she had to act normal. However, her whole world seemed to be crumbling down when she saw Klaus making out with someone in a nurse's costume.

Seconds had passed and a stream of tears had already ran down her face. Wiping furiously away at her face, she dashed out of the room.

Caroline had gone back home and she had completely let her guard. She was lying down in bed in her pajamas with a bowl of ice cream in her lap and tears streaming down her face. Upon hearing someone knocking on her door, she had no clue who it was. She hoped it wasn't Klaus and that he was smart enough to know that she wouldn't want anything to do with him. Getting up, she walked to the door and saw who it was. Damon Salvatore. She opened the door and let him in. "I take it you heard?"

Damon wrapped his arms around her, knowing that she needed someone. "He's not even worth forgiving."

Nothing else had really happened in Caroline's life except for the fact that she somehow came down with a fever. She wasn't sure how it happened, but all she knew was that she had felt the most miserable she had in a long time.

She was about to fall asleep but was shaken awake when she heard the door slam shut. "Mom?" the blonde asked, knowing that her mother had gone out for a call and would be back sometime today. However, she was slightly let down when a familiar devilish smirk was in front of her. "How in the world were you able to get in here?" She was ninety-nine percent sure that her mother had locked the door. Holding up his hand, Caroline saw that there was a key hanging. "Of course," she mumbled, slightly annoyed. "Remind me to take that back from you."

"Oh, love, even huddled up underneath thousands of blankets, you still manage to be snarky," Klaus quipped. This time, Caroline resisted the urge to roll her eyes at him. She was too tired to deal with any of this, which was she hadn't kicked him out of her house and halfway across the world by now. At least, that was what she was telling herself.

Meanwhile, the blonde was about to fall asleep or she already was and just talking in her sleep when he heard something come from her lips. "I know that you're in love with me." At first, he thought he was going crazy, but he knew for certain that her lips were moving. He didn't know what to do, but he didn't want to get his hopes up if she didn't actually mean it.

"You're hallucinating," he said, figuring it was the best way to give her a yes-or-no-answer. The chances of her waking up and actually remembering this were slim to none. Despite his hard exterior, his heart had seemed to be damaged beyond repair and the last thing he wanted was to risk the person he loved more than anything to rip it out of her chest. He had to look down to keep from crying.

"Well, I guess we'll never know," she said before definitely falling asleep. However, it seemed that that didn't help with her heartbreak either. All she dreamt about was the happy moments between them. Like the time where he surprised her for her graduation and when they kissed for the first time. Everything seemed so perfect, so she didn't know what happened or what she did to make it go so wrong.

What shocked Caroline the most was that when she woke up, Klaus was still at her bedside. She figured he was trying to get her back, but when she wasn't budging, he would have left. Maybe he had changed. Deep down, that was all she ever wanted from him. "What are you still doing here?" she asked, not to come off as rude, but because she was actually curious.

"If I'm being honest, and I am, it's because I fancy you." The words had left his mouth and he couldn't take them back now.

What shocked him the most was that she didn't say anything. He had left in an instant.

The Mikealson went home and he ended up being in the same room as Rebekah. He would have left the room to be alone, but he didn't have the motivation to move. "Nik, are you going to the dance tonight?" When he didn't answer, she thought of another tactic. "Caroline's going to be there."

"I don't care," Klaus said, but deep down, he really did. She was one of the few things he actually cared about.

A couple of hours had passed and the hybrid was waiting for Caroline to show up. He had asked her to meet him in the forest, but he wasn't sure if she would show up.

"Okay, what do you want from me?" Caroline asked. Turning around, he faced her and was shocked that she actually came, even if it was clear she didn't want to be there.

"Let's be real, love. I want to know what you're so afraid of?" He began to walk closer to her, but with every step he took, she took a step back. As much as he wanted to be close to her, he understood. He stayed where he was because he didn't want to overstep his boundaries.

"You! I'm afraid of you!" she snapped. "I'm afraid of getting close to you. The last thing I want is to get my heart broken again." She began to run her hands through her hair. "You know, you're not even worth the calories I burn talking to you. Get out of here."

"Caroline, I'm so sorry," Klaus uttered, taking her hands from her hair and into his hands. However, she used this opportunity to push him far away from her and throw a death-glare. He got the hint that she wanted nothing to do with him. "Goodbye, Caroline." He vamp-speed off a moment later.

Hours later, Caroline was hanging out at the dance. It seemed like towns like Mystic Falls had them pretty constantly, trying to remember the olden days. She didn't really want to go alone and Stefan was going with Elena and Bonnie was going with Damon, which meant that the blonde was forced to go with Matt. It was weird, especially because they hadn't done anything like this since junior year.

"Do you want a drink?" Matt asked when the two of them finished dancing.

"Yeah, sure, that sounds great." Caroline watched him as he got lost in the sea of people. A few moments had passed and he finally came back. Grabbing the drink, she pressed it to her lips and sighed in relief as it moistened her dry throat. "Thank you." She then leaned into him slightly and kissed him on the cheek.

What Caroline didn't know was that Klaus was watching the whole exchange from afar. He got a bit caught off guard when he felt someone place a hand on his shoulder. It was Kol. "Are you okay?" he asked, looking at the same two people his brother was.

"Why would I care?" Klaus asks, trying to keep his voice void of any emotion. The younger brother shrugged his shoulders, getting the hint that his sibling didn't really want to talk about this. Rubbing his shoulder, Kol departed away from the hybrid. It seemed as soon as he was alone, Klaus left. After all, he wasn't really in much of a party mood anymore.

Once again, Klaus had asked to meet up with Caroline. After last night, he needed to see her now more than ever. It was weird, seeing her with someone else, especially because it was Matt Donavan. He would have expected Tyler, but the human was...completely and utterly unexpected. However, he was pulled out of his thoughts when he saw her standing right in front of him.

"Klaus, please tell me you have a good reason for inviting me here. I stayed up very late last night and all I want to do right now is sleep." Looking her over, he could see that that seemed to be the last. Her hair was in a messy ponytail and she was wearing a sweatshirt with a pair of loose-fitting shorts. She then rubbed at her eyes, willing herself to stay awake and hear him out. Finally, he stepped closer to her and she waited in anticipation.

"I just wanted to let you know that I'm going to go away for a while. It's what you deserve." He could see that she sharply inhaled. "But, if we're meant to be together, I'm sure I'll find my way back to you." He softly pressed his lips to hers and the two savored the moment for as long as they possibly could. "Goodbye, Caroline."
