"What are you doing here?" Caroline asked, putting her stuff up. She had just gotten up after a long day at school and just wanted to go home and relax. Prom was coming up and her stress levels weren't helping with Elena being a humanity-less monster. Because of that, she just wanted to not go to the Miss Mystic celebration, even if she had every year and just wanted to stay laid back and unwind. However, that all changed when she was going to head to her room and saw Klaus Mikealson sitting on her bed, so she was a little annoyed. "I'm not here to play games with you. What do you think you're doing here in my room?" she repeated, slamming the door shut. Klaus just sat there, his chin in his hands. She closed the gap between the two of them and rubbed her temples, not in the mood for his antics. "Are you not going to give me an answer?" Her voice was full of anger and she had her arms crossed, just staring him down. A moment later, a strained chuckle escaped his lips. He didn't look like how he did usually because his eyes were red and he didn't have that cocky smirk on his lips.
"It was a mistake to come here. I'll get going," he said, keeping his eyes on the door and beginning to walk towards it. A wave of sadness washed over Caroline the further away he got from her and before she knew what was going on, she gripped his arm firmly. He turned around and she was able to properly inspect his exterior. His hair was a complete mess and he had dark circles underneath his eyes. "I shouldn't have come here unannounced. I'm sorry for bothering you, Caroline," he said, continuing his trek towards the door.
"Mhm," she said, speeding towards the door and keeping it shut, placing a firm grip on his hands. "You come back to Mystic Falls after being gone for who knows how long without as much as a letter, phone call, text or even smoke signal and then make a stupid excuse that you have to leave because I was surprised to see you in my room," she said, looking him up and down, which caused him to take a few steps back. She raised her eyebrows and examined him once more, shocked at how, for lack of a better word, broken he looked. She didn't want to care and be fixated on this fact, but she was. She was upset to see him this way, as well as angry because he came back and all those buried down feelings came back to the surface. "What are you doing back here?" she asked. Neither of them said anything until Klaus nodded.
"I've been asking myself the same question," he answered, avoiding her gaze and running a hand through his hair. "One might say that I missed you..." He couldn't look at her and his voice was so quiet that if it hadn't been for her vampire hearing, she wouldn't have heard him. This took Caroline off guard and she slowly wrapped her arms around him.
"I don't know what's going on with you...but I apologize for being so rude. I just want you to know that a normal person would've called first," she said, running her fingers through his hair and not wanting to let go, but only because it seemed like that was what he needed. A smile found its way to her lips when he listened to the sound of her heart and he realized that she was wearing a different perfume than the last time he saw her. With all these differences he picked up about her and similarities he remembered, the more he was breaking down. "What happened to you?" she asked when she felt a tear fall on her shoulder and he couldn't speak. Caroline took a step back and put his face in her hands, realizing that he was starting to grow a beard. He looked at her and she continued to wrap her arms around him. "You don't have to say anything," she said, knowing that if he did, his crying would be evident and no one was allowed to see him damaged. "Just nod or shake your head...show me something that tells me how you're feeling. Seeing you like this is terrifying," she said, the truth spilling from her lips. "Is anyone hurt?" she asked. A couple minutes passed and Klaus shook his head and Caroline smiled, glad no one was hurt, let alone dead. She wanted to step back because she wasn't sure what she would do if she stayed this close to him for much longer. One might have said that he had gotten in her head, considering he stepped back from her and put his hands at his side. She bit down on her bottom lip and rubbed her head, making her headache go away. "Do you want to stay here today?" she asked, clasping her hands together, and looked back at Klaus. "I wouldn't do this if you weren't secretly giving me puppy dog eyes. I'm also not in the mood to get into a fight with you...so we should get to bed. The bed is pretty small and you don't have to stay here if you don't want to," she said, shocked when he nodded and moved back to her bed.
She took her shoes off and took her necklace before helping Klaus to bed, so he took his shoes off. Caroline started to lie down, a good inch keeping them apart because she didn't really want to cuddle with him, surprised at how fast Klaus fell asleep. When he woke up, he was surprised to find that Caroline had her head on his chest, his fingers knotted in her blonde hair. He stayed there for a moment, careful not to wake her up when he moved. He slipped his shoes back on and pressed a soft kiss on Caroline's forehead.
"Thank you for your act of generosity, love..." he whispered before slipping out the house, making sure not to wake anyone else. When Caroline woke up an hour later, she thought that Klaus was just a hallucination from how bored she was, but she knew deep down that it was real.
