(PART 1) Chapter 7: Interlude; Understanding
This chapter is filler
Okay so imagine this book is like a map
And that maroon is the next big plot point I have. The colored dots are all mini plot point ideas that could lead up to the maroon.
So it's very much a we're not talking about this, or this, we're talking about THIS moment.
Today's chapter will not involve you much, mostly Yoongi learning to tolerate Jin.

At 4 am there was a knock on Seokjins door.
Rolling over on the other side of his pillow facing away from the door, Jin ignored it and went back to sleep.
There was another knock on the door.
Groaning, the brunette took his pillow from underneath him and covered his head with it.
There was furious pounding at the door.
That spooked the man. Jumping up from his bed, he rushed to rub the sleep out of his eyes and open the door. When he did, he saw a bored Yoongi leaning against his doorframe with his arms crossed. Jin scowled a bit at the younger man in front of him who was already dressed and ready to go for the day.
"Yah, you really know how to make a person wait, don't you?" Yoongi pushed himself off the door so Jin could close it to get dressed. Jin, however, just stood there blinking, making the younger raven haired man confused. "Did you already forget what I said yesterday? Get ready to go, we have somewhere to be."
The scholar still stood there, his mind not having cleared his brain fog from barely being awake.
Yoongi reached up, turned Jin around by his shoulders, and pushed him back into his room.
"Get dressed. I won't repeat myself," Yoongi closed Jins door and went back to leaning on a wall.
"W-where are we going...?" Jin muttered to himself before moving to his dresser, picking out a warm set of clothes. It's winter and before the sun has even thought about rising. Once he had his base layers on, he grabbed some extra warm shirts and pulled them over himself. Just in case. Your brother hadn't told you where the two of them were going so...
Once Jin reemerged from his room, Yoongi snickered a bit at his getup. Of course the older man would be cold considering he may not be used to this kind of weather. The place they were going would require some cold and water protection as well with the activity they'll be doing.
Which, by the way, Yoongi still hasn't revealed to the older man.
Shortly tsk'ing at the other, Yoongi motioned with one finger for Jin to follow him and started walking towards the back garden exit to the palace.
Yoongi isn't a man of many words, yet many words have been used to describe him.
Harsh, cold, devilish, uncaring, he's heard it all. And in a way he was all of those words and then some. His royal duties saw him overseeing prisoners and working closely with the castle guards. His demeanor made him a natural choice to interrogate the incarcerated as under that unfeeling glare of his, even the cruelest of men would weep like children. All that being said, there wasn't much he liked about his duties.
Your father was a cruel man. He would imprison anyone with the slightest grievance if it meant he got to show off his power in some form. He'd seen young teenagers arrested for stealing in order to survive. He'd seen elderly people in cells for tripping and breaking their noses, causing their blood to stain the ground which his highness hated the sight of. He'd seen single mothers behind bars for begging for money to help support their families.
He himself has heard over and over that if it wasn't for your father owing his deceased family many favors, he would've been left on the streets to rot.
Some days, he'd much prefer that.
But there was something you and Yoongi bonded over nearly straight away after your year of hating him: Your shared love of justice.
Yoongi loved seeing criminals get their comeuppance. He's seen the most disgusting types of individual in the prisons underneath the castle. He's seen them meet the fates they rightfully deserve. In fact, there have been quite a few times where Yoongi came close to begging the executioner to let him do it.
He stopped himself every time. He knew you wouldn't look at him the same way if he did.
As much as you two were siblings, you were best friends. Soulmates, even. You shared everything with each other. When Yoongi first considered the fact he liked men, you were the first and only to know. You immediately asked to be his person of honor and he accepted with a smile. You told him about Jimin who would sneak in to meet you, your other best friend. He ended up falling in love with the goofy minstrel. He even became Jimins confidant, the younger man telling him gossip and juicy stories from around town to cheer him up.
There were no secrets between the two of you.
So why he was keeping this one, he had no idea.
Once they arrived their destination, Yoongi put a hand in front of Jin to stop his walking.
If the younger man didn't do that, Jin would have walked straight into the pond they were now standing in front of. He was walking more like a zombie looking for food than a human rapidly approaching a destination.
"We're here," Yoongi muttered and Seokjin finally snapped out of his trance and looked around.
He saw a pond, gently surrounded by fireflies. Other bugs gracefully danced across the ponds surface, occasionally getting snatched up by the mouth of a jumping fish. Two fishing rods sat in front of a pair of chairs where a picnic basket rested between.
"You brought me fishing..." Jin whispered, his tone holding awe and admiration at Yoongis ability to read his personality so easily.
Fishing had always been one of his favorite activities growing up. He would drag his brothers along because they wouldn't want to be stuck at home. Namjoon would fish by his side when he was younger, as the middle child grew older, he would bring along a book and read under a tree instead. Taehyung never saw the appeal of waiting around for something that wasn't guaranteed to happen eventually happening so he would get himself into trouble in whatever ways he could, splashing in the water, stealing Jins bait, stealing Namjoons book, climbing on Jins lap for attention, anything he could do to have at least one pair of eyes on him. As he grew older, it was an activity he did to feed his family. His brothers knew when the fishing rods came out it was fish stew for dinner tonight. Especially after their mother got sick...
"What, do you not like to fish?" Yoongis hushed voice snapped back to the moment. The older man shook his head quickly to reassure the younger by his side.
"I love fishing, it was something I used to do all the time," Jin said, taking the right hand seat while Yoongi found his way into the left.
"And then...?" Yoongi pressed the conversation further, applying some bait to his hook.
"And then my mother died. After that, I couldn't find the appeal in it. In a way, it made it harder to feed my remaining living family but they didn't want to eat fish stew anymore either, I guess..." Jin trailed off, getting lost staring at the calm water of the pond. If he looked at his reflection close enough, he could see traces of his mothers features in his own face.
"Man, that sucks. I'm sorry," Yoongi muttered, passing the bait to the man on his right.
"No, no, it's alright. It's been many years now. And I know you were in a bit of a similar position," Jin attached the bait to his hook and casted the line out into the water.
"I wasn't old enough to have fond memories of my parents when they passed so I'd say not really," the younger man mirrored the elders movements, finding that Jin casts in a way that lets the line go out much further than how he himself casts. Seokjin sighed and lowered his head.
"Then I'd argue that's worse, I'm really sorry," he said, closely watching his line. Yoongi did the same.
"Nah, I think the opposite. Plus, I was able to be adopted by the worlds worst parents and have the worlds worst sibling," Yoongi joked and Seokjin laughed a little.
"Okay, I agree on your parents, but Y/N? They're pretty chill," Yoongi let out a quiet laugh of his own at that.
"They didn't punch you when you first met or were you embellishing the story to make yourself seem more pitiful?" Seokjin let out a full windshield laugh at that.
"They did. But they seemed... Different when I brought them to meet my brothers. They were smiling and laughing, they seemed to lose themselves in the music. And when I met them at sunrise? They were so peaceful and relaxed. I have a feeling they're only reactive because of the stress of being the next ruler of this kingdom. I'm sure I would become very different if I had that kind of burden on my own shoulders," Jin mused and your brother looked at him.
The words he said about you, the way his eyes glinted in a sorrowful way, as if he would do what he could to remove that burden from your shoulders in whatever way he could...
Jin has a crush on you. He was behaving the same way Yoongi would when he spoke about Jimin. The younger man thought carefully about how he should word his next thought.
"You should tell them, then," Jin looked at him and raised an eyebrow. "That you care about them. That you see how much they're struggling even if you've just met. I know my sibling more than anyone else. They need someone who cares about them as much as they care about others. If you could help them just a little bit, while I'm gone and forever after, you'd have my blessing."
Jin blushed at the last part. He thought he understood what your brother was saying. He's deduced that Yoongi knows about his tiny crush on you. Your brother was saying that he would approve of your relationship...
The older man pulled up one of his shirts over his nose in an attempt to hide his blushing cheeks. Yoongi chuckled then widened his eyes as Jins bobber went under the water. Jin almost dropped the rod before moving to pull the line in. Yoongi set his own rod on the ground to help Jin reel in.
It was a bit of a struggle but they eventually brought the big largemouth bass to land.
"Whoa... This thing is huge..." Jin gaped and Yoongi nodded. "How are we going to bring this in?" Yoongi shrugged. "How are we going to sneak it past the cooks so we can cook it ourselves?" Yoongi laughed and contemplated the answer.
"Well, they're only in the kitchens at their allotted times. Breakfast is seven so we have two hours to catch some more or start cooking now."
The two men went back to catching fish so they wouldn't run out. Once they had a reasonable enough number, well, reasonable according to Jin, they did their best to lug the huge fish to the kitchens.
Two very weak men and one with extremely low energy was not a good combination.
Luckily, Namjoon happened to spot them when he had gone to look for Jin and noticed he wasn't in his room. He laughed at the two men in their predicament and grabbed a few of the fish from them effortlessly while the other two gaped at him in awe. The older two trailed behind the younger man as he easily walked to the kitchens where he laid the fish on a counter. Yoongi and Jin nodded at him in thanks for his help and Namjoon left to go read a book.
The two silently got to work gutting and cleaning the fish to make breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Once that step was done, they fileted the bigger fish and cut some meat off the smaller and put them in a stew pot with some broth and vegetables. The fileted pieces went into the cold box to make sure they didn't overheat and become gross if the sun chose to grace the sky with her presence today.
When the stew was done, they served up some bowls for themselves and ate in relative silence before Yoongi nearly fell asleep at the table. Wishing each other a good day, Yoongi went back to his room to sleep and Jin agreed with that idea, hoping that the staff and whoever went into the kitchen for breakfast were happy with the food they had prepared.
And that his mother would be proud that he finally found fun in one of his old hobbies again.
