10: What a Feeling

George was slurping her second order of coffee for today, rinig na rinig ang tunog ng pag-higop niya ng kape mula sa maliit na straw na iniinuman niya. Avi was beside her walking while holding her phone with two hands.

"Okay, wala naman akong typos so far," Avi places her phone back on her pocket and then turns to her friend.

"Meron pang laman 'to," pilit naman niya. She opened the lid of her cup, turning it upside down to retrieve the last remnants of coffee left.

"Pero look on the bright side nalang.

"Syempre papayag 'yun," she grins.

Their laughter filled the air. They even nudged each other both at the same time.

"I can't wait na marinig pa ang mga kwento ni Tita Reg," Gi wipes the tears of laughter. "But it's going to be about goddamn Johnny Benitez so for sure we'll be hearing the worst."

Avi opened her mouth to add something to their topic but her attempt went interrupted as her phone began to vibrate in her pocket.

"Teka lang Gi," she fished her phone out, her brow creasing as she sees her dad's caller ID. "Huh, bakit kaya tumatawag si dad sakin? He usually texts."

"Okay," Avi slide her finger on the screen, answering the call made by her father. "Hello, dad? Bakit ka tumawag?" There was silence on the other line that she had to look at her phone again to check if the call dropped or not.

"I don't think he'll do that," Avi places her phone back on her ear and she shockingly looked at George as she hears her dad talking. "I think he dialed this by mistake."

"Bakit?"

"May kausap siya e," Avi was about to end the call but instead of doing that she pressed the speaker button instead. "Ay hala!"

"Alam mo Reg, I've been supportive of you since day one. You've never heard me object you, pwera nalang nung naging kayo ni Johnny of course," Ali heavily sighs on the other line. "But this is just too much. Parang nagsasayang ka nalang ng pera at this point, you should focus on yourself more than finding a person who doesn't want to be even found."

There was a loud sound on the background but since Avi wasn't present at the place they're in, hindi niya alam kung ano o saan galing ang tunog na ito.

"And who cares if I'm using my money to find her? It's not wasting, Ali. I'm using the dime for a reason. Hindi ako nagsasayang especially now that I have a goddamn clue! She was in Spain! I can feel it, malapit ko na siyang makita," Regina's voice quivered. "Ali I need to see her, to at least tell her the words I was holding back before.

"Shut up, Regina!" Ali screamed. "I told you already, don't say such words. Nahihirapan akong tignan ka araw-araw kapag sinasabi mo 'yan."

"Ali, I'm sorry but that's what it is. Kung ayaw mong sinasabi ko 'yan, then just help me and find Naya. She's what I need most and-"

Avi turned the call off and shakily released a breather. She felt dirty for eavesdropping like that, but it wasn't even her fault.

"I feel disgusted," George choked on air, he chest feels tight. "Nakinig tayo sa private conversation nila."

"Alam ko! Kaya nga pinatay ko na bago pa tayo may marinig na iba e," forming her fist into a hand, she went to bite the side of her finger. "Do you think I should tell my dad that we accidentally listened to their conversation? Siguro dapat kong sabihin no?"

"Huy hindi! Huwag mong sabihin, just pretend you didn't hear anything. I'm sure he won't notice that he butt dialed your number naman," napakamot siya sa ulo niya. "If you come to think of it obvious namang may secret sila ni tito at kung sasabihin mo naman baka maisipan ni tita na hindi na ituloy ang interview. You're this close to having her whole story, what harm would it cost you to keep your mouth shut?"

George has a point as Avi thinks of it. She badly needed that to save her spot in the club and also her running position for valedictorian. Knowing her Tita Reg who's very strict when it comes to the details of her life, she'd surely say no to the interview if she'll tell. Tama si George.

"You're right, what's the harm in pretending. It's not like malalaman natin kung sino si Naya," she wets her lips. "Tsaka... That's her and dad's secret to keep, though di ko alam kung mom knows."

"Aren't they good friends? Sure akong alam rin ni tita," Gi rubbed her chin. "Pero wait, parang possible na anak niya si Naya based on what we heard. Didn't she almost got married?"

"Or that Naya might be her secret child with someone who isn't a celebrity," bigla niyang hinampas ang braso ni George.

"Sorry?" Gi says with a slight chuckle. "Bakit ba kasi ngayon natin narinig 'yan, pano tayo makaka-focus sa exams niyan?"

"Huwag mo nalang isipin."

"Ahem," both of their heads whipped as they both heard a fake cough coming from behind them. "You're blocking the my way."

"No wonder the skies turned dark. May demonyo palang dumaan." "What?"

Avi shooked her head and turned to face Bianca. "The hallway is large enough for you to walk through. Huwag ko kami gawing reason, for all I know sinasadya mo 'yan."

Bianca then faked a hurt expression. "Why would I do that?

"Cut the crap already, you don't like us and we don't like you," naiinis na sabi ni George. "Ano bang gusto mo? You've interrupted our conversation."

"Wala naman. I've heard from Mr. Torres that you're working on a project Avi, tapos hindi mo pa pinapakita sa kanya kahit manlang draft. I wonder why?" Bianca looked up and pretends to think, after that she gasped and looked at Avi. "Probably because you don't have anything yet, diba?" She pouts her lips. "It's okay Avi, di mo naman kailangan mag-effort with a good story. You'll get kicked out either way."

"Di mo lang alam na-" George stops as Avi's hand blocks her.

"You're right, wala pa kasi akong story. Go on and tell Mr. Torres, I'm sure magiging thankful 'yun lalo na't malalaman niya mula sa'yo," Avi flashed her sweetest fake smile which she knew would trigger Bianca.

"What does that even mean?" Bianca scoffs then rolls her eyes. "Whatever. It's not like you'll produce something good anyway. See you in class," she turns her back away from the two and quickly stomps away.

"Ikaw naman kasi bakit di mo pa ko hinayaang sabihin sa kanya 'yung about sa interview," Gi stomped her foot in irritation.

"Hayaan mo siya. Mas okay na tahimik lang tayong dalawa para kapag natapos 'yung interview kay tita makain niya 'yung sasabihin niya," Avi winks at her friend as she slides her arms around Gi's. "Tara na, may exams pa tayong sasagutan."

George only sighs in defeat. She already knew that this was already the end and there is no argument to be made. As they walked by, Avi suddenly falls on the floor, letting go of gripping George's arm and followed by that was her yelping.

"Oh my god! Avi, okay ka lang ba?" Frantically kneeling down, she went on to check her friend.

Avi forced a smile out of her lips, not wanting to worry her friend. "Okay lang ako, ang dulas nung sahig e," she chuckles awkwardly, slowly standing up with the help of George only to hiss as she does so. "Ang sakit."

"Hala, baka na-sprain mo 'yung ankle mo," Gi bit her lower lip, worry was written all over her face.

"Kaya ko!" Avi tried to mask the hurt she was feeling but it was really visible based on her expression. "Ngayon pa talaga? Dalhin mo nga ko sa clinic, Gi. Malapit lang naman 'yun dito e."

"Okay tara," of course, she didn't care if she were to be late. Carefully guiding her friend, they took the time in walking towards the clinic in their building.

As the door opens, a petite figure of a woman stood there holding the door. Bahagyang nakakunot ang noo nito at nakatingin sa kanilang dalawa, she wore a white lab coat that had her ID clipped on her right pocket on the same level as her chest. If it wasn't already obvious, she's a doctor, but what surprised them is she's not the doctor they both knew.

The doctor hesitantly says, her eyes exchanging between them.

George snaps out of her floating mind.

The doctor nodded, opening the door wider so that the two could come in.

"Upo ka dito," the doctor helped Avi to be seated on the plush sofa chair that their clinic has. Once the girl was settled, the doctor kneeled down. "Saang paa ang masakit?"

"Yung kanan po," Avi answered, hissing almost immediately as the doctor went on to touch her foot.

"Sorry dear," she gave her a sheepish grin. "That confirms it, you have a sprained ankle," standing up, she gives Avi a comforting smile. "I can ease the pain for the meantime pero I suggest that you go to a clinic that provides an x-ray to be sure na hindi severe 'yung sprain mo."

"Hindi mo pa ako pwedeng pumasok ngayon?" Avi asked.

The doctor chuckled. "Well, can you walk?" Avi shook her head as an answer. "Then that's a no," tumalikod siya at pumunta sa table niya kung saan may kinuha siyang papel at pen. "I'll provide an excuse slip for you para alam ng mga teachers mo 'yung nangyari sa'yo, in that way you'll have a reason rest and also to take an exam when your foot is okay," she scribbled on the said paper. "Anong name mo, dear?"

"Avrielle Nayileah Castillo po." She answered noticing that the doctor was slightly frozen as she heard her name.

The doctor's hand that held the pen was raised midair, natigilan ito sa narinig. Avi noticed, as well as George kaya nagtama ang mga mata nila.

The doctor cleared her throat. "Oo nga, it's kind of unique too, especially 'yung second name mo."

"Okay na po," George says making the doctor turn to her.

"Okay, thank you," she then walks over to where Avi is and behind her was George. "Okay na 'yung excuse slip mo. Need nalang ng signatures ng teachers mo para makapag-take ka ng exam once you're okay," now facing George, she gave the girl the slip. "Can you please give this to your teachers on her behalf?"

Gi turns to Avi. "Okay ka lang dito?"

"Oo," she nodded.

"Okay," she smiled at Avi and the doctor. "Sige po, una na po ako. Balitaan mo nalang ako, Avi ha."

"Good luck sa exams, Gi!" Avi gave her friend a thumbs up to root for her.

"Thanks, pagaling ka ha!" Gi waved her hand as a goodbye, she opened the door of the clinic and left as she only has a few minutes before the bell rings, indicating that class has officially started.

Avi was left alone with the new doctor inside the clinic. She sat on the sofa chair while her foot was being massaged by the doctor, easing the pain she was feeling earlier sunod naman nitong nilagyan ng bandage ang paa niya.

"Ayan, does it still hurt like before?"

Thank you po."

The doctor grinned. "I'm glad I could help, although kailangan mo pa rin ng x-ray just to be sure na your sprain isn't severe ha. Can I borrow your ID para ma-contact na 'yung guardian mo?"

"Okay," once she was sure that the bandage was secured, she stand up and walks over to her table which was quite messy.

"Okay lang po doc, I can manage po," Avi says in between texting her mother who immediately responded to her text message.

"Okay lang, you can stay here as long as you'd like pero huwag ka naman sana abutin ng gabi dito, kailangan ko ring umuwi," the doctor jokes and Avi laughed.

"Joker rin po pala kayo, doc."

"I try," she says, fixing the clutter on her table.

Most of them are dated from way back before, nothing really interesting has caught her eye until she looked through the books. Nakita niya dito ang Anna Karenina kaya kinuha niya ito at binuklat, but to her surprise the book is written in Spanish.

Avi closed the book, looking at the cover page again, noticing a name on the lower right side corner. "Rindy Herrera," she perked up, looking at the doctor.

"Rindy is my nickname."

"Totoo nga po, no joke," Avi went to face her. "Pero nakakabasa po kayo ng Spanish?"

Rindy nodded. "I'm from Spain."

Avi eyed her and she can totally see some features of the woman that gives away she has Spanish genes. Her lips are plump, her nose is pointy and her skin is a bit reddish.

She politely asked and the doctor nodded.

"Dito ako lumaki, we just migrated there," she answers. I think it's also good to experience a different environment in work."

Avi was interested so she carefully scooted on the sofa to get more nearer on Rindy's table.

"How is it working in hospitals po ba?"

"Para kang nasa action movie depending on your field and department syempre. Ilang taon na rin naman kasi akong nasa loob ng hospital and I wanted to try something new kaya nung naghahanap ako ng trabaho dito sa Pilipinas, I took this," Rindy tapped her fingertips on the table.

Rindy released a hearty laugh.

"Sorry po, parang pusa kasi ako, curious as always."

"It's no biggie," Rindy grinned at her.

"Nga pala, I saw your details on the slip earlier, graduating student ka pala."

"Ilang months pa po pero yes," she wriggled her brows. "Siguro eto na 'yung last time na makikita niyo uli ako sa clinic kasi college na ko sa susunod e."

"Hopefully nga last time na kitang makita na injured," biro nito. "Ingat ka sa paglalakad next time ha?"

"Copy po doc," Avi gave her a small salute which made Rindy roll her eyes jokingly.

As Avi thinks through, she was interrupted as the door opened slightly and peeking from there was her mother.

"Hello po, good morning. Ako po 'yung mother niya," her mother says.

Avi's eyes landed on Rindy who just stood up from her seat. Rindy looked very nervous. Surely this shouldn't be new to her anymore, she's a doctor after all.

"Hello," Rindy cleared her throat, taking cautious steps in approaching her mother. "Dr. Herrera po." It was clear to Avi how nervous the doctor is.

Her mother and Rindy talked while she remained seated there. Avi was already sitting inside the car strapped in a seatbelt. Kakagaling lang nila ng isang clinic para sa x-ray ng paa niya, it was nothing serious, and the doctor from that clinic told her to rest her foot for at least three days.

Her mom nodded. "Typical dad, di matatahimik."

"I know right," Veronica snorted. "Nga pala, bago ata 'yung doctor ng school niyo?"

"Pano mo nalaman?"

"Mabait naman siya, chinika ko nga kanina e," Avi took a big bite from her burger.

"Bagay ka talaga maging journalist kung lagi kang gan'yan," Veronica ran her thumb on the side of Avi's lips and then wiped it using the tissue paper placed on the dashboard.

Obsessed ka na," Avi laughed with her mother, completely forgetting their current talk.

⊱ ──── {.⋅ ۵♡۵ ⋅.} ──── ⊰

Hours passed by and Avi didn't noticed the time. Three days is a short time and bago niya pa mapansin, baka nasa school na uli siya. Her focus went interrupted as she heard a knock on the door, she already knew who it was. The knocking pattern was too familiar.

"Pasok!" She yelled, watching her door open and spit out her friend's figure.

"Hi, bff!" Masiglang bati ni George sa kanya. "Binilhan kita ng tusok tusok habang pauwi ako. Anong sabi about sa paa mo?"

"Buti naman," Gi sighs in relief. "Kainin na natin 'to bago lumamig lalo."

"Ang thoughtful mo naman, Gi," she began to store her things away, leaving her study table clear so that they can use it to eat.

"Kamusta exams ngayong araw?" Avi asked as she swallows her food.

"Oks lang, madali lang 'yung science, pwedeng hulaan," Gi perked up, looking a bit ecstatic. "Pumasok na pala 'yung kapalit ni Ms. Almeda and guess who it is!"

"Kakilala mo ba?" She says in between her chewing.

"Naalala mo ba 'yung babaeng nahulugan ng groceries tapos binigay mo 'yung tote bag mo? Siya 'yun! Anaya Cortez 'yung name niya tapos from Spain siya."

Mukha naman siyang mabait," Gi wiped the corners of her mouth. "Tapos alam mo ba?

Too many thoughts were running through her mind that she could not even distinguish what.

"Avi?" She snapped out and turned to Gi. "Sabi ko tumunog 'yung phone mo."

"Baka si dad 'yan. Kanina pa 'yun nagpa-panic nung nalaman niyang injured ako," she reached out for her phone, checking out if she had a missed call or a message from her dad.

She chuckled but that was replaced with a small huh as she sees her Tita Regina's messages.

"Oh bakit?" Gi asked in curiosity.

"Nag-message kasi si Tita Reg."

"Sagutin mo, baka importante 'yan."

"Ano pa nga bang gagawin ko?" Jokingly, Avi went on to open the message she received from her aunt.

"Nag-chika na agad si dad kay tita grabe," Avi sets her phone down with a laugh.

The two friends spent their time talking about other things instead.

Their time soon came to an end as George had to go home already before it gets too late. She went to open instagram and scrolled there endlessly, watching video reels, checking her idols' accounts and more. It just suddenly slipped her mind for some reason. Following her thought, she went to type in the full name of the doctor at kaagad naman na may lumabas sa mga results.

Avi pressed the first result since it had the doctors full name and as she did, it was already confirmed that this was the person she was looking for.

Rindy rarely posts on her instagram. As Avi was about to press the exit button, bigla niya namang napindot ang profile nito at mula doon na-view niya ang story ni Rindy.

"Oops," kinagat niya ang daliri niya. Rindy would know that she's stalking her, makikita nito na naka-view siya sa story niya, so embarrassing.

Hindi pa man tumatagal ang ilang minuto, Avi received a message, from who else? Of course from Rindy.

With a smile on her lips, Avi sets her phone down. Hindi niya maintindihan but she feels at ease with Rindy. She can't explain it. She was sense that familiar feeling which she doesn't know how to describe. Avi shooked away her thoughts and closed her eyes instead, Rindy was right, she needs to sleep.
