Chapter 10

Before Chance's eyes reach the stairs, he closes them.

"Kinda hard for you to see me with your eyes closed, Dumb*ss." Tim chuckles.

"I have to admit, I'm a little scared." Chance says with a shaky voice.

"Scared? About what?" Tim asks with furrowed brows.

"Of what you might look like." Chance says. "I mean, do you look like what I remember or do you look like some kind of zombie."

"Uh." Tim chuckles slightly as he looks down at his body. "I guess I look like what I use to look like."

"He doesn't look like a zombie, Chance." Austin giggles. "He looks just like the pictures around here."

Chance takes a deep breath as he slowly begins to open one eye.

Tim rolls his eyes and shakes his head.

"Will you hurry up. You're prolonging this exciting revelation." Tim laughs.

"Well, it's not every day that I see my best friend brought back from the dead. I'm just a wee bit nervous." Chance argues.

"Actually, I'm still dead." Tim shrugs. "I've just been brought back from where ever I was."

"Oh, my God." Chance whispers as he finally opens his eyes. His eyes fill with tears as he sees the brown-eyed man standing on the stairs. The man that had been his best friend since grade school. "Tim?"

"Uh, yeah." Tim smirks. "Who were you expecting Elvis?"

Chance slowly stands up. His legs felt like rubber bands as he tries to take a step toward his friend. His breath quickens as he stares into the eyes of the man that had left them over six months ago. This couldn't actually be happening. It just wasn't possible. Chance had seen his bruised and cut face as his body lay in the coffin. Chance was one of the pallbearers that had toted Tim's body. He had watched as Tim's coffin was lowered into the grave.

Chance begins to feel lightheaded as the sounds around him become muffled. Suddenly, everything goes dark.

"CHANCE!" Austin screams as Chance falls to the floor unconscious.

"Now that, I was not expecting." Tim chuckles as he descends the stairs.

"What's going on?" Adam asks as he and Avi run from their bedroom.

"Chance just fainted." Tim answers calmly.

"Well, just what did you expect, Tim? He thought you were dead." Austin answers as he lays Chance's head in his lap.

"I'm still dead." Tim replies as he gets down on his knees beside his fallen friend.

Avi runs to the bathroom and grabs a washcloth and wets it with cold water. Adam goes to the kitchen to get a glass of water.

"Here, Tim." Avi says as he hands the washcloth to his husband.

"What did you do to him?" Adam asks as he lays a hand on Tim's shoulder.

"I didn't do anything. What makes you think I did anything?" Tim asks, looking up at his wife.

"Because I know you." Adam chuckles.

"It's not my fault he's always been over-dramatic." Tim says as he begins to apply the cold cloth to Chance's face.

Chance groans as he reaches for his head.

"Come on, Austin, let's get him to the couch." Tim says as he reaches for one of Chance's arms. Austin grabs his other arm and they lift Chance up from the floor and help him over to the couch.

Austin sits down next to Chance and takes him by the hand. Tim squats down in from of his friend, resting his arm on Chance's leg.

Chance opens his eyes meeting the brown-eyes of his best friend staring back at him.

"I, uh, I don't guess I thought this completely through." Tim chuckles. "I mean, the outcome of this revealing."

"Oh, you think?" Chance answers. "When have you ever thought things through."

Chance slowly reaches out and touches Tim's face. It wasn't a figment of his imagination. He wasn't going crazy along with Adam, Avi and Austin.

"You're really here." Chance says in a soft voice.

"Uh, yeah, well, kinda." Tim shrugs. "I'm still dead, Chance. This body is only a shell that formed. I don't know how or why it looks like my original body. My real body is still in the grave. I can't explain any of this."

"But, you feel so real." Chance says as he rubs Tim's cheek.

"The body is real and again, I don't know how." Tim says, slightly shaking his head.

"He does everything a normal person does except for eating and sleeping." Adam adds as he sits down on the other side of Chance.

"But the body can't leave the house." Avi adds, squatting down beside Tim. "The spirit can leave but not the body."

"But what happens to the body?" Chance asks.

"I leave the body lying in bed in our bedroom." Tim answers. "It's just more or less a shell. I mean, it looks like I'm asleep but actually I'm not there."

"So the foot steps I heard in the store the other day, it was you? I wasn't just imagining things?" Chance asks.

"It was me." Tim nods.

"This is a lot to digest." Chance says, shaking his head. "I need something to drink."

Adam reaches for the glass of water and hands it to him.

"Naw, I think I need something stronger than water." Chance chuckles.

"Chance, I can't express how crucial this is that this is kept between just us." Adam says. "No one can know."

"Right, there'd be ghost hunters crawling out from under rocks trying to cleanse the house. And I really don't know what that would do to me." Tim says.

"The only other person that knows besides us, is my sister." Avi says.

"Yeah, that's fine. I won't say a word." Chance says. "Now, where's my drink?"

"Bourbon. Right?" Tim chuckles as he heads to the cabinet.

"You remembered." Chance smiles.

"I may be dead but I don't have amnesia." Tim says as he pours Chance a drink. "Besides, I bought you enough drinks at the bar, that it's branded in my mind."

"I know you don't have to eat to survive, or whatever, but can you join me in a drink?" Chance asks.

"Yeah, I guess so. I haven't had anything like this since I've been back." Tim shrugs.

"I'll fix us all a drink." Adam says as he stands up. "This joyous reunion deserves a toast."

"I agree." Chance laughs.

Adam fixes everyone a drink and passes them around.

"Okay." Tim says as he holds up his glass. "Uh, to the friendship that goes beyond the grave."

"Perfect." Chance smiles as they clink their glasses together then drink the alcohol inside.

Tim makes a face and starts coughing.

"Baby? Are you alright?" Avi laughs as he pats his husband on the back.

"Yeah." He answers through his coughing. "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak."
