Chapter 16 The Fair (Flashback)
Melody's P.O.V
After Natalie and Alexa came back from the bathroom, we all went to the swings. Once the man in the front saw our wristbands, we ran to the best seats. Everyone was laughing and smiling. Even though I was mad and tired of Alexa, I still was having a great time.
I looked at Natalie next to me. My happy expression dropped. She was frowning and she seemed really depressed. The thing that worried me the most was that she looked scared. No, she was scared.
I nudged her. She looked at me. "Oh, hey. You startled me." she said, putting on a fake smile. I smiled at her. "Sorry. Natalie, you seem a bit gloomy. Is anything wrong?" I asked her.
She shook her head and sat up straight. She was nervous to reply. "What? I'm not gloomy. I'm happy to be with everyone. And if I do look worried, it's because of the ride." she said quickly.
"I didn't say worried." I said. She looked down. "Oh, um, um." The ride started and our seats lifted. Natalie immediately ignored me and looked up at the night sky.
I stared at the clouds, the wind flowing behind me. Our seats got higher and higher. The fair became smaller. I was smiling and screaming with joy. The city was beautiful. Everything was beautiful.
Then, I saw an orange light flashing. I raised my eyebrows. What? The light was small at first, barely visible, but then it got bigger and brighter. I looked at it, wondering what it was. All of sudden, something hit me.
I drove down the streets of my neighborhood. I had the window rolled down so I can say hi to the neighbors. I waved to Janice and Kelly and her two girls. I said hello to Mr. Parks and Georgette and Hank the gardener.
Our town was small, so we knew everyone well. Then, I turned the corner onto my street. Suddenly, this orange light flashed towards me. I was blinded and spiraled in a circle, just missing a fire hydrant. I stopped the car, and got out of it.
All the neighbors stopped what they were doing and looked too. I walked a little closer to the light, examining it. Then, I realized, the light was coming from my house. And it wasn't a light, it was a flame.
I screamed at the realization and ran to my house. The neighbors tried yelling for me, but I didn't listen. I ran inside my house and looked for my parents and brother. "Mom! Dad! Jacob!" The smoke from the flames tried to consume.
I coughed and it was hard to breathe. Still, I ran up the stairs in search of my brother. I saw my mother's ring and grabbed it. I saw my father's watch and grabbed it. I ran into my brother's room. I didn't see Jack. I tried looking for him, but he wasn't there. All that was there, was the drawing he was supposed to ship to some YouTubers.
I yelled for my family. My pudgy dog came strolling to my feet. I picked her up and still tried searching for my family again. I was crying and sobbing for them to answer. Then, I saw a hand coming from the bathroom. I yelled and tried to run to it.
Suddenly, arms grabbed me and took me away from the hand. I yelled and cried. "No. Please! No!" The arms took me away from the fire and out of the house. I turned and saw the arms belonged to a firefighter. I let go of my dog, who ran to a close neighbor.
The firefighter was trying to calm me down. I was pushing and looked at my house, inhaled in flames. I managed to wrangle out of the firefighter's arms. I dropped on the grass and stood up to run, but others held me back.
Suddenly, a part of the house burst into flames. That part was the bathroom. I cried and screamed. "No! Please! They're in there! No!" Georgette grabbed me and pulled me into a hug. I sobbed in her arms. "Please..... no..."
The light vanished and I woke up to reality. My heart was beating fast. I tried wrangling loose in the seat. My screams of joy were now screams of fear. Natalie realized that and tried calming me down.
"Melody! Calm down! It's just a ride. It's just a ride!" she said.
"It's just a ride? It was never just a ride! In a ride, you have the thrills, the quick fear, and then you exit. They didn't exit! They couldn't exit! So it wasn't just a ride! Because they're still in fear!" I yelled.
Natalie stared at me. She knew what I was talking about. I didn't realize the ride was ending and that we were being lowered. As the ride stopped, Natalie helped take the chain away.
When she did, I dropped to the ground. Natalie picked me up. I was crying, distressed, emotional, confused. Why did they have to go? Why couldn't they exit?
Natalie helped me to the exit. Everyone stared at me in wonder. I stood up straight. "Sorry, just a little fear of heights." I said laughing. Alexa smiled grimly at me. I looked at her.
Max, however, was concerned. He walked up to me. "Are you sure you're okay?" he said. I smiled. "I'm fine." He nodded and walked back to Alexa. The group moved on to the next attraction. Melody- 2, Alexa- 0.
