Astoria

My alarm rings. I rub my eyes as they adjust to the bright daylight. I smile at the sun. I get up and brush my teeth and get dressed after a relaxing shower. I love showering. It washes all the body's dirt away. It gets rid of the past and readies us for the present. It makes me feel fresh and new. Enough about showering. I decide to tie my hair in a French braid. I've got the hang of it now. I open my closet to look at my clothes. I decide upon -

Nice. Paired with my ever favourite, jeans. I gobble down my cereal and milk, reminding mum I'll be home late because of my shift at Cuppalogy. I grab my bag and dump, yes, literally dump it next to me in the passenger seat. I drive like such a maniac, had my mum been there she would disown me. But she isn't here, so I can drive like Edward Cullen🤣.

I park my car in the parking lot and spot a girl, looking completely lost, but she's trying not to show it. Helping new kids being my speciality, I stride up to her.

"Hey, are you new here?" I ask.

"Apparently yes."

"Well, do you need any help?"

"My idiot of a brother has left me here to wait for him while he has a word with the principal"

"Ouch. Hate him much?"

"He's my twin. I can't hate him even if I want to. But I'm 1 minute 34 seconds elder to him."

"Oh well. I can take you to class though."

"Yeah let's go anyway he's gonna take ages."

While walking, we continue chatting.

"I'm Scarlet Calloway, by the way"

"Astoria Smith"

"Nice. I see another girl approaching us. Is this school just filled with girls?" She jokes.

"No, actually there are boys too. They just decide to saunter in when and as they please. That's Callie, my best friend."

"Nice to meet you Callie" She says as Callie approaches us.

"You too...um?"

"Scarlet"

"Scarlet. Nice to meet you too"

Adam (in case you've forgotten, Adam is Callie's boyfriend) comes right behind her.

"Hey, Astoria"

"Hey, Adam. Scarlet's brother is around the principal's office somewhere, so do mind helping him to get to class? They're new here"

"No problem. See you guys soon" He pecks Callie on the cheek and she beams. "Bye Call"

"Bye Ads"

Maybe it wouldn't be bad to have a boyfriend, but wait, who am I kidding? Which guy would want to date me anyway?

Shoving my thoughts aside, I take Scarlet to class. Turns out she is pretty smart. Like, very smart. She carries around this folder and puts all her important notes in there. And she also has a diary where she writes top-secret stuff. Wow.

During break time, Scarlet pulls her brother over to have lunch with us. He has blue eyes, a firm jawline, even built well, is he a football player? Also his hair, brown and cut short, not like the rest of the boys.

"Ethan, meet Astoria, Callie, Adam, May, Leo, and Luke. My friends"

"Hi, you guys. I know Adam because he helped me. Didn't catch the rest of the names though" He laughed. He's funny.

"I'll do the intros, I'm Leo" - He stands up for emphasis - "This is my girlfriend, May" - Points - "This is my brother, Luke"

"This is Callie" "Her boyfriend Adam" "And that's Astoria" - He points at me. I wave.

"Nice to meet you guys" He says. He sits down next me. Okay, his cologne is nice. Not that I'm saying.

We eat and talk, talk and eat and Ethan is so funny, man. I'm laughing a lot right now. Seriously, I don't think anyone can be melancholic around him.

After school, I say goodbye to the others, and drive to the café. I see Raymond and wave. He's equally happy to see me, because from what I can see, it's a coffee rush. I go behind the counter and wear an apron.

"Two mocha's please, one with a pump of hazelnut" A customer barks. Are people seriously that rude to café workers? So not nice. But rule number one, the customer is always right.

"Coming right up" I say, smiling. He doesn't return the smile. Eh, who cares?

After filling in about a dozen orders, my feet are on the verge of giving up. When the rush clears around 5pm, I'm exhausted.

"Is it always like this around here?" I ask Raymond, whose busy washing dirty cups and saucers in the sink.

"Yeah...but today was something" He says.

"Let me do that, why don't you rest? You've been on your toes even before I arrived"

"Thanks. You're not too bad for a first-timer" He says, watching me.

"I learnt from the best." I say, smiling again. He returns it.

"So how long have you been at this job?" I ask.

"In Manhattan we did do the same buisness but we didn't get many people. Here is a whole new level. I've been at this for 10 years now. I started when i was 8. Did the job of mopping tables"

"Wow. You've been at this for a pretty long time then"

"Yeah I have"

Once I'm done with the dishes, and mopping tables, at around 6:30 pm, I am allowed to leave for the day. I'm exhausted,and I don't think I will spend much of my time awake now. Ringing the doorbell, I wait. Soon the door is opened. And i can't believe my eyes!

"Will!!" I give him a tight hug. Now this is what I call a surprise.

"Oof, you are way heavier than last time." He laughs. I laugh too.

"But you told me you will arrive sometime this week"

"Yes, I did. This week started today, princess" He says. "Now come on in"

I get inside, and the house is a whole new atmosphere. Everyone is so happy and jolly. This is what it means to have the entire family together. It's like a perfect house with a broken door when one member of the family is missing. Will was that door. Now our family feels complete.

It's like I was filled with a newfound energy. Even though I felt tired, I was energetic in playing Snakes and Ladders with Will and Adri. Girls V.S. Boys. Girls won. Like always. While me and Adri are doing a victory dance in the living room, mum yells at us to finally go to sleep. I wish everyone a good night and go to my room, before mum goes all out on us. Believe it or not, she did miss this. Miss the three of us making fun of each other, acting mischievous and fooling around. She just doesn't show it. Like how I didn't show I was tired. Now I'm drifting off to sleep like a hibernating bear. Snuggling under the covers, I go to sleep.
