Chapter Twelve
Ella you would not believe me if I tell you the name of the person that just entered Cake 'n' coffee." Daniella Promo, another waitress in cake 'n' coffee, rushed into the kitchen where Ella was busy transferring the freshly baked but now cool strawberry sponge cup cake into a lager tray.
"Who?" Ella placed the last cup cake into the silver tray.
"The one and only Kaden Mckade in flesh!"
Ella shrugged as she carried the tray and walked out of the kitchen to the front counter, where she began to arrange the cup cake into the show-glass for the display of cakes.
"You don't look surprised." Dani followed her to the counter."do you even know how popular the shop would be after the word spread that he was here today? And do you even realise how people would treat you when you tell them you saw Kaden Mckade in flesh? And just not any Kaden Mckade, but the one from uptown?"
"I invited him here,Dani." Ella rolled her eyes.
"You did what?" Dani shouted, which made every head in ten feet radius turn towards them in question.
Ella offered them a reassuring smile, which made them turn back to what they were doing."can you do the both of us a favour by keeping your voice down? And yes, I invited him here."
"I can't believe this." Dani's eyes were filled with accusations. "So this is what you do after working hours? You knew him all this while and yet you kept mute? I am surprised and disappointed at the same time."
"Listen Dani," Ella slapped her palm on the table, then whirled around to face her."you don't tell me about your personal life and I don't see any reason why I should start now. We don't talk all the time,so whatever I do with my spare time is none of your concern."
"Right." Dani scoffed.
"What's going on here?" Jamie, the third waitress, asked as she placed some dollars on the counter and her empty tray.
"Nothing." Ella threw Dani a look that said, tell her and you are a goner."whose order are you taking next?"
"That Armani suit freak over there." Jamie pointed a finger over her shoulder without turning.
Ella followed her direction and true to her word,Kaden was sitting in a booth at the far of the room, looking handsome and out of place in his Armani suit.
"You do realise that that person you are calling a freak is Kaden Mckade?" Dani scoffed again.
"Tell that to the downtown daily news not I." Jamie huffed. "Imagine him asking for blue-berry muffin and latte with designs. Where does he think he is? White house?"
Ella smiled at the fact that there was another female who didn't like Kaden Mckade. But then Jamie had always hated the uptowners since the ones she had the opportunity of meeting were snobs. And judging from Jamie's behaviour,Kaden was not on her good list.
"I am not ready to launch into a dialogue for that money snob." Jamie muttered as she reached for the last cup cake on the tray, but before she could pick it Dani slapped her hand away."ouch, what was that for?"
"We are sharing." Dani divided the cake into two. "Pick one. We have a new arrival Jamie." Dani picked her own share before pointing at the new customer settling into the empty booth beside the door.
"Right." Jamie wiped her oily hands on her apron before going to meet the new customer.
Ella removed her apron." Cover for me. I need to talk to Armani freak for few minutes. Can you do that?"
"You owe me two free strawberry sponge cake for that favour." Dani collected the apron from her. "And a detailed explanation."
"Get off my case mom." Ella smirked at Dani who grinned back.
After making a quick detour to the changing room to grab the envelope holding the office file,Ella made her way to where Kaden was sitting down. By the time she got there he and Jamie were arguing as if they were sworn enemies.
"I told you,we only have that type of cake," Jamie pointed to the cup cake in the tray on the table,in front of Kaden." And as for you latte,we don't do design's here. In case you missed the sign on the I-75, This is downtown not uptown, where Armani suit freaks like you belong."
"I can have your manager fire you for talking to me like that." Kaden threatened."do you even know who I am?"
"Am I supposed to?" Jamie pressed the heel of her palm to her fore head. "Get of your high horse Mr Armani suit. Last time I checked the world don't revolve around you uptowners, Mr Mckade."
"I--"
"Save it for anyone who cares to listen." Jamie smirked." That cake is five dollars. I don't care if you eat it or not, just know that you are paying for it."
"How can they employ someone like you? And isn't this place called cake 'n' coffee? You don't even have what people want."
"Point of correction,we don't have what you want. But we have what we simple downtown folks want." Jamie snapped. "If you want your designer coffee,I suggest you drag yourself out of here while your head is still attached to your body."
Ella decided that it was time to step in,so she placed a gentle hand on Jamie's arm." Jamie, let me handle him."
"Put the jerk in his place." Jamie started to turn away but she paused. "If he troubles you just holler, honey."
Ella tried to quell her laughter but she failed to. Kaden gave her an irritating look which Ella choose to ignore as she slid into the seat across from him.
"Uptown snob." Jamie said over her shoulder as she sauntered away.
Kaden waited until Jamie was out of ear-shot. "I don't like her."
"You don't have to." Ella placed the envelope on the table in front of him."I did this not to please you,but to help Cassie."
"I'm aware." Kaden removed the office file from the envelope and went through. "Wow."
"I warn you Mckade. If you make her cry or sad even for a minute you would have me to deal with. I will make sure you never look a woman in the face or even sire a child."
Kaden somehow didn't doubt that she'd do just what she said she would do. "I assure you that she is in safe hands, miss Milestone."
Ella gave him a look that said she clearly doubted that his hands was anything but safe.
"call me Ella. That strawberry sponge cake is made exactly for you." Ella got up.
"Can I inquire about how you manage to get her signature?" Kaden got up too.
"Does it really matter?"
"Miss Milton signed those papers without argument? Why do I find that hard to believe?"
"I had the help of another person. Who happens to be Cassie's new friend." Ella saw Dani show her two fingers and mouthed rush hour. "I need to get back to work,Mr Mckade."
"Kaden. Just one more thing before you leave."
"What is it?" Ella asked impatiently.
"What is the other friend's name?"
"Josie. See you around."
Later when Kaden was seated in his silver Aston martin,he regretted dressing up as if he was going to a charity gala. It made him stick out like a sore thumb in this part of Philadelphia where every man wore plain shirts or a T-shirt that had,'we are downtowners and yeah we are proud about it' or 'Hawaii guys are hot but colourful', printed on it.
It should look ugly or disgusting, but he somehow loved the shirts than the suits he was used to wearing every time.
This clearly show the clear difference between the backgrounds of he and Cassie. A very clear warning that she didn't belong in his world just as he didn't belong in his. But the difference only want to make him get closer to her to know what would happen if a downtowner dally with an uptowner.
His phone jostled him out of his reverie.
Kaden groaned when he saw that it was his mother who was calling him. Arabella was the messenger of insistence when it comes to what she wants. She probably want to discuss about the wedding plans, which was the very last thing he wanted to do. He had enough on his plate already as it is.
He connected the phone to the car speakers and received it just as he ignited the car and change gears.
"Kaden honey." Arabella crooned from the other end of the line. "How are you son?"
"Fine mom." He checked the side mirror for any oncoming car as he reversed out of the parking space he had managed to squeeze his car into. Luckily the road was free,so he pulled into the road, change gears and cruised up the road leading to the I-75. "And you?"
"I am great. Especially now that someone decided to give us all a surprise."
"Who?"
"William just got back from Paris. And I am hosting a family dinner to welcome him home."
"William is back?" Kaden's surprise echoed in his voice. "He isn't supposed to be back until next week."
"He said he wanted to surprise us. Give me a minute."
Kaden heard her shout something to someone. He chuckled as he pulled on to the I-75. His mother was always looking for any opportunity to hold a family dinner and the very last thing she would want in any mishap in her plan.
"I swear that Aliyah is the most clumsy girl I've ever met." Arabella was saying when she returned to the phone. "I want you to come to the house."
"Mom,i--"
"Don't give me that usual bladders ash about you being busy. I won't have it,I called Amelia and she said you had no meeting for today. I want you at the house by six pm."
"Okay mother." Kaden sighed in resignation.
Everyone in the family knew that it was useless arguing with Arabella if she wants something. She'd always end up getting it.
"And bring that Skylar along with you. We need to talk about your wedding and it'll be good to introduce her to William."
"Mom..." Kaden trailed off when he saw that she had hung up. "Damn it." He hit the wheel with his right fist as he slowed down for traffic.
Why did that brother of his have to arrive when things were beginning to look up? If William discover about Cassie,he would want to play the hero and rescue her from the monster, namely him. Kaden knew that no matter what William mustn't see her or all would be lost.
And why did his mother have to ask him to bring Skylar along?
Kaden hit the wheel with his fist again when he realised that he had more problem than he thought at first. It's been two days since he had talked or even seen Skylar. And he had abandoned her at his house to have dinner with Cassie.
"Aw,hell!"
He had a lot of grovelling to do.
Kaden's car above.
