CHAPTER EIGHT
Cassie hesitated in front of the threshold of their home. After they left Golden Homes, she and Ella had gone back to Ella's house to sleep and talk. When it was seven pm Ella left for work, leaving only Cassie in the house. Just like she told Ella, she wanted her mother to go to bed before she got home, since Beatrice goes to bed early and barely wait up for her. Which is the reason she's standing in front of the door hesitating at the threshold.
Taking a deep breath, she opened the door and stepped inside. The lights were off which meant her mother had turned in early just as she had expected. Cassie closed the door as softly as she could. After locking it,she tip-toed across the room to the stairs. Just as she was about to step on the landing, the lights came on making her go still.
Busted. She thought as she turned around to see Beatrice leaning on the wall, with one hand on the switch and phone in the other hand. She had this look on her face that clearly said: 'you have some explaining to do,sly girl.' And Cassie wondered what brought about the look, for all Cassie knew, her mother have never chastise her about staying out late; it was well known that Beatrice does not care about her.
So, whatever her mother wanted to say is surely not about her lateness or the money.
"Mother,I thought you had gone to bed." Cassie feigned a smile.
"Good evening to you too." Beatrice folded her arms over her belly. "So,how was your day?"
Cassie frowned. What is she up to now? "Huh... Fine,I guess."
"Did you make any good deliveries today?"
OK,now this is getting weird.
"Mom,why the questions?"
"Am I not allowed to ask my daughter how her day went?"
"Of course you are. But it's not like you to ask." Cassie folded her arms too. "I know something is wrong somewhere. Or is it about the money I am owing you? I don't have it now."
"It's not that." Beatrice rolled her eyes. "You don't have to keep things as Important as what I heard about you today, from me."
"What are talking about?"
"Oh,don't play dumb with me." Beatrice said. "I always knew that you would eventually listen to me. But I never thought that it'll be so soon."
"This is getting weird by the minute." Cassie muttered to herself. To Beatrice. "Mom ,I am not in the mood for your talks."
"Yeah. Yeah. You can brag now since you will be swimming in money soon. Just know that I am your mother and I expect fifty percent of the money you receive."
"For the love of all that breaths, what are you talking about?" Cassie threw her hands up in exasperation.
"Come see this for yourself." Beatrice walked over to where she was standing, then held out her phone to her.
Cassie took the phone from Beatrice's outstretched hand. She did a double take when she saw the picture of she and Kaden on the internet. A twitter battle was going on about the headline which made Cassie flush a bright red in anger.
' Uptown Billionaire prince meets Cinderella from Downtown.'
Cassie felt her self getting more angry as she read on: 'It seems Kaden Mckade has finally met a blonde who doesn't fancy him like his other one week flavours. Click on the video below to hear to conversation that ensued between them.'
"Damn these perverts." Cassie swore when she was that the retweet was about four million, in the space of six hours. The comments and conversations were Six million.
How did her quite life go from not popular to popular in the matter of six hours?
"Mind your language." Beatrice snatched her phone from her. "And I have those damn perverts to thank. Because if not for them, I wouldn't know what you are up to. And I know that you won't tell me about it."
"Why should I?" Cassie glared at her. "It's not as if we share that type of relationship,do we?"
"Why should you tell me?" Beatrice glared back. "I am your mother, I gave birth to you. We are suppose to share things with each other." She caressed Cassie's hair.
Cassie slapped her hand away."Last time I checked,we share nothing but an apartment together. Plus you don't give a fig about anyone but yourself."
"Don't you say that to me." Beatrice chided. "I will pretend I didn't just hear that." She smiled. "Tell that money bag to see me if he wants to take you away, even if it's for a week or year. I don't care, but we have to talk about the agreement."
"Beatrice!" Cassie felt tears swell in her eyes. "How dare you suggest that I sell my body? I don't care if you throw me into the streets, but hear this. I will never sell my body just so you can have money."
"I am your mother." Beatrice shouted right back."you will do as I say or..."
"Or what?" Cassie snorted."it's no news that you don't care. I can't help but wonder about how daddy stayed with you all these years. You are not worthy of his love,No,let me rephrase that. You are not worthy of anyone's love."
Beatrice's hand flew back before connecting to Cassie's face. Cassie's head to the side from the impact of the slap.
"From now on, refrain from mentioning that man in this house." Beatrice voice shook as tears filled her own eyes too. "You are so much like him in every way. You never appreciate the things I do for you."
Cassie stared at her mother as tears ran down cheeks. Beatrice's eyes was filled with unshed tears too, Cassie wondered why.
"All I ever asked for is your love,Beatrice." Cassie choked out. "I watched other children grow up with the love of both parents, but you... You never gave me any attention. Dad was always there for me instead of you. Why mom? Why?"
"Because---" she was cut off by the door bell. Beatrice took a deep breath before side-stepping Cassie to go upstairs.
Cassie watch her mother go upstairs in curiosity. What did she want to say before the door bell chimed? Whatever she wanted to say, Cassie made a vow to find out. She walked over to open the door.
"Hi."
Cassie stared at the person as if she was seeing an alien. How did she know where she lived.
"Hi,Josephine." Cassie stepped out the door so she can close the door behind her.
"What happened to you?" Ansela eyed Cassie's red-rimmed eyes curiously.
"Nothing." Cassie sniffed as she rub her eyes with her palm. "Why are you here?"
"Oh." Ansela reached into her old and tattered bag to retrieve a small white envelope and a packet of flapjack. "I dropped by your flower shop this morning and I found this envelope on your door step."
Cassie accepted the envelope and the biscuit. "And the biscuit?"
"Is from me to you." Ansela smiled. "I dropped by the grocery store yesterday and I couldn't resist bringing it to you. I hope you don't mind?"
"No, I don't." Cassie smiled weakly. "Thank you so much. But how do you know where I live?"
"Your card remember?" Ansela reached into her bag again. "Here is my card. Call me if you need someone to talk to."
"I'd invite you in for a cup of coffee, but---"
"It's fine." Ansela grasped Cassie's hands in hers. "Don't be sad okay? My mother says 'if you are sad or worried, you will bring the people around you down'. And even though I just met you,I am not happy seeing you like this."
"Thank you,Jo."
"You are welcome. I'll be on my way now."
"Bye."
Cassie smiled genuinely at her retreating back before going back inside the house.
Ansela waited until she was in the elevator before removing her wig,her raven hair cascaded down her back to rest against her spine. She gave a sigh of relief for the fact that Cassie didn't recognise her from earlier. She began to mull over what she just saw. What could have happened for her to cry? Was it because of her encounter with Kaden?
Ansella vowed not to rest until she found out the truth. Plan B is already in motion now, she'll just have to wait for the result to yield. And she hoped that it will bring a good result. Speaking of the plan, Ansella took her phone out of her purse, then dialled Amelia's number. Making Kaden's P.A her partner in crime seemed risky, but if it's to get Kaden out of that witch's claw, she would do anything.
Amelia picked the phone on the fourth ring. "You should always tell me before hand,if you are going to call me."
"It is urgent and it can save a life you know." She added with a little drama.
"You would always have a dramatic flair for thing,no matter what." Amelia sighed. "What is it?"
"Is the plan in place?"
"Just know that if we are caught, you would be the one taking most of the blame. Agreed?"
"Yes." Ansela rolled her eyes. "Tell me already." She sauntered out of the elevator into the street.
"I have given him the envelope and her details too."
"Perfect. Now let's wait and see." Ansela giggled as she hopped into the taxi that she hired from uptown. "It's fun playing matchmaking, don't you agree?"
"I am not a schemer like you are," Amelia sighed again." So forgive me if I don't think it to be fun."
"You are no fun at all." Ansela pouted.
"Thank you. I've got to go."
"Uh, okay then."
"Oh,I forgot to tell you that the older Mr Mckade is arriving by next week."
"Do You mean William?" Ansela sat up straight.
"The one and only. Bye." Amelia hung up.
Ansela dropped her phone on her lap. William would want to step in and save Cassie from her brother and then Kaden would leave Cassie for William, then he would go ahead to marry that slut. All her plan would be for nothing. She buried her face in her palm.
"Oh. No."
So, Cassie and Beatrice had their famous fight again. Only that this time it's slightly different.
What do you think Beatrice wanted to say before the door bell chimed?
And William is coming back. *jumps up with my eyes and mouth open wide* what do you think will happen when he arrives?
Don't you love our very own, little scheming princess,Ansela Mckade?
