Chapter 45: Killer Caught
Brielle’s P.O.V
In the hectic moment when everything seemed to be moving, I quickly scooted away from Samuel’s gun. I found myself against a wall and huddled there, watching the madness. Men in dark blue uniforms grabbed tattoo guy and neon-eyes, dragging them out of the room. A group of two tackled Samuel and wrestled the gun out of his hand.
“Let go of me!” Samuel exclaimed, trying to get away.
“Sir, you have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you. Do you understand the rights I have just read to you? With these rights in mind, do you wish to speak to me?” the man said.
“Yes, I have a question!” Samuel spit. “Why am I being arrested?”
The man nodded towards me. “You are being arrested on the count of possession of illegal drugs, attempted murder, and murder.”
Samuel spluttered. “I didn’t kill anyone!”
“We’ll see,” the man said lightly, before roughly dragging him out of the flat.
I still sat in the corner, too scared to move. An older looking woman came up to me and crouched down.
“Hey sweetie,” she said quietly.
“Hi,” I whispered back.
“What are you doing here?” she asked.
“He took me,” I answered. “Well, actually, I came in the house first.”
“Why would you do that?” she asked.
“He’s my father,” I whispered. “And I wanted to talk to him.”
“You had no idea about all of this?” she questioned.
I shook my head. “Not a clue.”
“Okay, sweetie, are you hurt in any way?” she asked, casting an expert eye over me.
I held up my wrists, showing her the bruises in shapes of fingers. “Just here when he squeezed my wrists.”
The woman’s eyes widened. “How hard did he hold you?”
“Pretty hard,” I admitted, pulling my legs to my chest. “Can I go now?”
“Of course, sweetie, you just have to give us your contact information for the trial,” the woman said.
“T-trial?” I stuttered.
“Yes, dear, your attacker has to go to trial for what he did,” she said slowly, as if I was dumb. “And you are a witness, so you have to come and give testimony.”
“I know how it works,” I said. “But I have to come?”
“Yes,” the woman said, now looking at me strangely. “Otherwise he could walk.”
“Okay,” I squeaked, already scared of having to face Samuel again. “Can I go now?”
“Go ahead sweetie,” the lady dismissed me and I scurried off, trying to get out of that hellhole.
Opening the door, I was greeted by a flash of cameras and people shouting at me. I raised a hand to cover my eyes as reporters shoved microphones in my face.
“Brielle, what happened?”
“Ms. Williams, did you find the killer of your brother?”
“Brielle, who killed your brother?”
“Who was that man that was escorted out of the flat?”
“Are you involved in this?”
“Ms. Williams, why where you in that house?”
I ignored them, looking around for one particular face. I couldn’t find him. I was being surrounded by reporters and policemen, all trying to ask me questions about Samuel. I didn’t pay them any attention, scanning the crowd over and over again, searching for him.
“Brielle!” a voice shouted.
My head whipped around and finally I saw him. Niall was jumping up and down, right up against the police barricade, waving his arms at me. His face was pale and he looked worried, but all I could focus on was his huge smile.
“Niall,” I breathed then I took off, running through people, pushing them out of the way, not even caring if they fell or not. All that mattered was that I got to him.
Niall saw me coming towards him and he climbed over the barricade, ignoring the policemen telling him he couldn’t be inside a certain area. I ran faster, my path open and I launched myself into Niall’s arms, wrapping my legs around his waist and holding him tightly. Niall caught me with one arm and brought the other one up to my neck. I buried my face in his neck, already feeling the tears coming.
“Shh, shh,” Niall whispered, stroking my hair. “I’ve got you, you’re safe.”
“I was so scared Niall,” I murmured. “I thought he was going to kill me.”
“He wouldn’t,” Niall answered. “Not when I’m here. He couldn’t.”
I laughed a little, but it sounded more like a hiccup mixed with a sob. “I love you,” I told him.
“I love you too,” he replied and kissed me.
I kissed him back and I felt Niall slowly lowering me onto the ground. I stood, wrapping my arms around Niall’s neck and standing in my tiptoes to reach. Niall leaned down, keeping his arms around my waist. Everyone around us cheered as we kissed.
We broke apart but stayed close, resting our foreheads on each others’. Niall smiled as I looked up at him.
“I’m never letting you out of my sight,” he said.
“I would be fine with that,” I answered.
Niall’s smile grew and he was about to kiss me again but a policeman tapped his shoulder. Niall just looked at him, not letting me go. “Yes?”
“Sir, we need to ask Ms. Williams a few questions,” he said.
“Ask away,” Niall said, wrapping one arm around my shoulders and waiting.
“Alone,” the policeman clarified.
Niall’s eyes narrowed. “My girlfriend almost just got killed because I let her go by herself. I’m not going to let her go again. Anything you want to ask her, you ask her right here.”
Protective Niall was hot, I thought. “You can ask me right here,” I said to the policeman.
“Fine,” he huffed. “Who was the man trying to kill you?”
“My father,” I answered.
“Did he admit to anything?” the policeman produced a pad of paper and a pen from his pocket and scribbled on it.
“He said he was in a gang, and sold drugs and that he killed James,” I rattled off. “Then, he tried to kill me because I knew too much.”
“Did he physically hurt you?” the policeman inquired.
“He left these bruises,” I held out my arms.
Niall saw them for the first time and almost growled. “I’m going to kill him.”
“Not really, Niall,” I said hastily, for the sake of the policeman.
He finished asking me questions and then I could finally go home. Niall walked me home, not letting go of my hand.
“I can’t believe he hurt you,” he seethed.
“It’s fine,” I said.
“No it’s not!” Niall exclaimed, his grip on my hand tightening. “He’s your father; he’s not supposed to lay a finger on you! And he tried to kill you!”
“Niall,” I said, trying to get his attention but he was still fuming.
“And I feel horrible because I’m supposed to protect you, and I wasn’t there to. If you had died, I would have never forgiven myself!” Niall said.
“Niall, you’re hurting me,” I said, gesturing to the hand he was holding.
Niall immediately let go, looking ashamed. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine,” I said.
“No,” Niall said, taking my hand gently. He planted kisses all over it, touching the spots where his hand was. “Better?”
I nodded, laughing. “You didn’t have to kiss it better.”
“Yes I did,” Niall said stubbornly.
“You’re an idiot,” I told him.
“I’m your idiot,” he replied.
I grinned, shaking my head. “Yeah, you’re my idiot.”
…
“Would Brielle Williams come up to the stand?” the prosecuting lawyer called.
I walked up to the stand, thinking about the last time I had to come up to one. It was when I was the one being convicted, but now I’m on the other side and it felt good.
“What is your relation to Samuel Williams?” the prosecuting lawyer asked.
“He’s my father,” I said, wrinkling my nose.
I told my story about how he tried to kill me and how he confessed everything to me. Then, they played the recording from my 911 call. That’s how they found me- my phone. The dispatcher heard what was happening and called the police and recorded my phone call for future use. Then, they came as quick as they could.
Samuel winced when he heard himself say that he killed James. He really screwed himself; I didn’t do anything.
The recording finished and the judge looked over the court. “The jury finds Samuel Williams guilty of first degree murder. Would you like to try for the death penalty?” he asked, looking over in my direction.
My lawyer was going to answer, but I answered for him. “No. He deserves to rot in jail forever.”
The judge nodded and carried out the rest of the sentencing. I ignored them. I was too occupied kicking Niall when he would nudge me.
“Look at me,” he whispered in my ear, his breath tickling my neck and making me shiver.
I glanced over at him to see him smiling at me. You did it, he mouthed.
I shook my head. No, we did it, I mouthed back.
Niall’s smile grew and he reached for my hand, holding it tightly.
“Court adjourned!” the judge announced, banging his gavel on his desk.
I jumped and stood up, stretching as people filed out of the room, soon leaving it empty. I turned to Niall, where he was stretching too, his arms above his head, making his shirt raise a little, revealing the bottom of his abs.
“Let’s get out of here,” I said. “I’ve had enough of this place to last me a lifetime.”
“Alright,” Niall said, grabbing my hand and pulling me out of the door.
“Where are we going?” I asked, half-laughing as he pulled me along at a fast pace.
“You’ll find out,” Niall said mystically.
I laughed and Niall’s hand suddenly applied more pressure to my wrist as he yanked me into an alley way. I stopped right in front of him, our noses touching as cars passed us on the street.
“What are we doing in an alley?” I breathed.
“We’re going to kiss first then I’m going to take you to where we’re really going,” Niall said.
“We’re not there yet?” I asked. “Then why’d we stop?”
“Because I wanted an excuse to kiss you,” Niall said simply.
“Well, no kisses for you until we get to where we’re going,” I said.
Niall raised an eyebrow before leading me out of the alley, taking me down the street towards a couple of really tall buildings. Suddenly he stopped dead, twirling me around and kissing me.
I jerked back in surprise. “I told you no kisses!” I exclaimed.
Niall smirked. “Yeah, but I really wanted to kiss you.”
I rolled my eyes. “Just take me to where we’re going.”
“Your wish is my command,” Niall bowed and I laughed.
As it turns out, Niall took me to the top of a skyscraper. We sat next to each other and I leaned my head on Niall’s shoulder.
“I’m glad that you’re okay,” Niall whispered. “If he hurt you…”
“I don’t want to talk about it,” I said. “It’s over, it happened, he’s gone.”
“But whenever I look at those bruises, I think about him hurting you,” Niall protested. “And that I couldn’t protect you.”
“But you did protect me,” I insisted. “I’m here, you helped the police find me, and you made sure I was safe.”
“And now I’m not letting you go,” Niall said firmly. “You’re stuck with me, forever and ever, babe.”
I smiled slightly. “I wouldn’t want to be stuck with anyone else.”
And when he kissed me, I felt like I’d finally found the answer to who I was. Not a murderer, not a daughter, not a joke, but Brielle. Brielle Jo Williams, who belonged to Niall James Horan, a boy who not only stole my heart, but showed me the way to love…
