Chapter 30: Cell Block

Niall's P.O.V.

I literally ran into the police station. Once I was moving, I couldn't seem to stop. In the car, I was jiggling so much that Harry threatened to make me walk the rest of the way. I ran into the desk, colliding with it with a loud bang.

The police officer jumped and stared at me.

"Can I help you?" he asked cautiously.

"Bail...Brielle..." I gasped clutching the stitch in my side.

"What?" the police officer looked incredibly confused.

"He wants to bail out Brielle Williams," Harry translated, after catching up with me.

"Oh," the officer's expression cleared. "Well, that will require some paperwork," he rustled around his desk for a second. "You have the money?" he inquired.

"Yes," I said, too tired to reply sarcastically.

I mean seriously who says they will bail out a person, then be like, oops, sorry, I don't have the money?

"One moment please," the officer left his desk.

I tapped his desk idly, watching the door he disappeared behind. I was itching to see Brielle. I needed to see her, to hug her, just touch her. I needed to know if she was okay. The police officer came back.

"You can't bail out Brielle Williams," he said.

"What?" I gasped.

I heard similar sounds of shock and indignation behind me.

"Why not?" I demanded.

The officer looked almost apologetic. Almost. "I'm afraid we have a right to hold her for twenty-four hours after her arrest," he explained.

"What about bail?" I pressed. "Can't we post bail to let them out of jail, but they still have to go to their trial?"

"That is true but we also have a right to hold her for twenty-four hours after her arrest," the police officer elucidated.

"Can I at least see her?" I asked desperately.

The officer smiled grimly. "You have ten minutes until visiting hours are up."

I heard Harry utter a "thank you officer" but I was already heading to wherever they held the inmates.

The police officer tried to stop me, but I ignored him. I walked straight into the cell block and looked for Brielle. I heard dry sobbing from the cell to my left, and I glanced at the person inside, and then did a double take.

It was Brielle. She was huddled on a grimy bed, crying. My insides clenched when I saw how she was being treated. I also noticed a heavily tattooed man watching her with interest. I ignored him for the time being.

"Brielle!" I yelled, running towards her cell.

Her head snapped up. "Niall?"

When she saw me coming, she ran for her cell bars. I collided with the bars, trying to reach her. We found a gap in between two bars and kissed, trying to get to each other. I heard Lacey sigh and Harry did too, but I didn't care. Brielle was so close, yet so far. I put a hand through the bars and caressed her face.

"Don't see much love in jail," the man said dryly.

Brielle pulled back, her face harsh. "Shut up!" she hissed, and clanged her handcuffs against the bars.

I was startled by the noise and Brielle turned to face me again. She half-smiled and tried to push her hair out of her face.

"He's been saying stuff like that all day," she explained. "It gets annoying."

I was interested to see the feisty side of her. Lacey and Harry joined me at the bars, smiling. Brielle noticed them.

"Lacey! Harry!" she exclaimed, and tried to hug them.

Her handcuffs wouldn't let her move her hands through the bars, so she ended up kind of punching them. Lacey attempted to hug her, but it didn't really work. Harry just smiled and waved.

"Fancy seeing you here," he said casually.

"Yeah," Brielle grinned. "Thought you'd be the one in here."

Harry looked disgruntled. "Why me?"

"You're the crazy one," Brielle said, and turned to face me again.

Her eyes searched me hungrily, and I searched hers as well. I didn't want to leave, ten minutes until visiting hours are up or no. I wanted to stay here and protect her, or I wanted to take her home with me, where she belonged.

"You know, you could have just waited for me to let you in," the police officer grumbled, coming to join us.

I ignored his comment and reached for Brielle's hands. She seemed to sag against my touch, and that's when I noticed now tired she was. Brielle was exhausted, and she was scared, and she wanted to go home. I was ready to pick the lock and take her with me, but there was the minor problem of the police officer.

"Couldn't you take her handcuffs off?" I asked him.

His brow furrowed. "They didn't take her handcuffs off?" he questioned.

"No," I answered, gesturing to her hands.

"Yeah, no problem," he answered, and moved forward, pulling out a ring of keys.

I decided I liked him as he unlocked the handcuffs and took them, pocketing them.

"You have to leave soon," he reminded us. "Two more minutes."

I let Lacey and Harry say their goodbyes, as I wanted alone time with Brielle. Lacey and Brielle got a little teary, but Harry just smiled and waved like normal. Finally, they left.

It was quiet for a while. Brielle studied her hands, rubbing her thumb over her knuckles nervously. I took her hand, making her stop.

"You don't have to be nervous around me," I soothed.

Brielle let out a nervous laugh and glanced up at me. "I'm not nervous," she confessed. "I just feel awkward with you seeing me like this."

"I don't care how I see you, as long as I can," I answered.

Brielle let out a little chuckle.

"What's so funny?" I asked.

Brielle shook her head, laughing a little harder. I thought about what I said then got it.

"You little pervert!" I exclaimed.

Brielle burst out laughing, and I felt accomplished. I mean, I wasn't trying to be weird or wrong or anything, but I was glad to make Brielle laugh. Finally, Brielle stopped laughing and glanced up at me. She reached through the bars and pulled me closer, bringing her lips to mine.

I responded, trying to pull her closer, even though the bars were blocking my way. Brielle broke away after a second, leaning her forehead against mine.

"Can you take me home?" she asked.

My heart clenched. I had forgotten that I wasn't allowed to bail Brielle out, that I couldn't.

"I'm sorry," I whispered. "I tried, but they won't let me."

Brielle, for her part, nodded as if she expected this. "It's okay. I kind of expected it. They have something against me."

The police officer suddenly came back inside. "Two minutes are up," he said gruffly. "You need to leave."

I looked at Brielle, whose face had dropped with the policeman's words. I tried to smile, for her sake.

"Hey," I said. "See you tomorrow?"

Brielle smiled sadly and nodded, still standing close to the bars. I kissed her one last time.

"I love you," I told her.

As usual, Brielle only smiled a little and blushed, but I wasn't expecting anything different. I understood her boundaries. I had made it clear that I was only saying it because I wanted Brielle to know how I felt about her, and that she didn't have to say it back.

"See you tomorrow," she said quietly and went and sat down on her bed.

I waved and was guided out by the policeman. Lacey and Harry were waiting for me in the lobby.

"Let's go," I said once I was in hearing range.

They left without another word, me following them. I climbed into the backseat of Harry's car. Harry started his car and drove off, heading for my apartment. I leaned my head against the window, enjoying its coolness against my forehead. I watched London pass by without really watching. All I could think about was tomorrow, when I would be able to take Brielle home.
