CHAPTER EIGHT.

⸻ "SO [NAME], DO YOU HAVE A CRUSH?" Kiyoko had asked, the room shifting towards the awkward [hair color] haired girl.

The topic had just been about Kiyoko and the volleyball team member, Tanaka Ryunosuke, which had, of course, sparked up the crush discussion. Quite cliche for a girl's sleepover, if [Name] was being honest.

[Name] scratched her head, looking between Yachi and Kiyoko, who had both been intently staring at her and awaiting her response.

"Well, I-uh well don't really like any guys from our school in that way," she admitted, ending her sentence with a nonchalant shrug.

The pair of friends stared, Kiyoko looking slightly confused and Yachi looking... well, slightly relieved.

"But, I had thought you and Tsukishima were a thing? The volleyball club won't stop talking about how you two had gone to the festival together?"

[Name] and Yachi's jaw dropped, immediately turning to look at Kiyoko, who had pushed up her glasses before returning their confused looks. Yachi, who was a part of their volleyball club, had seemed the most confused. She was in the club, and not once had she heard a peep about a possible brewing romance between Tsukki and her best friend.

[Name] immediately shook her hands in defense, "No, no, no, we went as a group! Yachi, Yamaguchi, Tsukki, and I," she listed, almost going as far as pulling her phone out to show proof. Whoever was spreading those weird accusations was going to be immediately debunked!

"Y-Yeah! Plus, it was [Name] and I together most of the time!" Yachi defended, earning a small giggle from Kiyoko.

"I believe you two!" Kiyoko said, covering her mouth to contain herself.

[Name] had let out a sigh, looking down at the group. It's not like the idea of dating Tsukishima was all that awful, but she just had no interest in him. Or any of the boys at their school.

She didn't have time for fun, but no matter how hard she tried to steer away from it— it seemed to get closer in closer. Maybe it was Yachi who had been slowly breaking her out of that shell.

"Well, Yachi, do you have a crush on anyone?"

[Name]'s head shot up, immediately locking eyes with Yachi, who had been staring at her already. The three sat in silence, only [Name] and Yachi sharing a look with one another whilst Kiyoko glanced between the two.

"Not really..." Yachi had trailed off, removing her gaze to look pack at Kiyoko. "I-I mean there is someone that I'm interested in, but we're just friends right now. It probably wouldn't work out!"

She had to have meant Yamaguchi, right? [Name] had seen how much time they had spent together and how they would hang out after school, so maybe it was him!

Or maybe... it was Kiyoko? [Name]'s stomach dropped at the though, watching as the two looked at each other with sympathy, and Kiyoko lifted her hand to place on Yachi's shoulder. She had never considered that maybe Yachi had liked girls, but Yachi had said she liked a friend that things probably wouldn't work out with, and well, Kiyoko had a crush on someone!

The spiraling thoughts made [Name]'s stomach hurt and heartburn with jealousy.  The idea of Yachi having a crush on anyone felt painful, feeling as though she may be replaced with a possible lover.

As badly as she wanted to press on, she chose not to.

"Well, I'm getting a bit sleepy," Kiyoko spoke up, her hand covering up a yawn, "I think I'll head to bed."

"Oh, right! Who wanted to take the floor again?"

"I-"

"It's fine with me," Kiyoko had interrupted, patting on the blanket beneath her that she had sat on, "I prefer sleeping on the floor anyways so, you two can have the bed."

Yachi's face had grown red, looking over at [Name].

"Is that okay with you?"

[Name] couldn't sleep at all, tossing and turning besides Yachi, who had been peacefully unaware. She hadn't understood why it was so hard to fall asleep. She had shared a bed before with cousins and such, but this just felt strange.

She shifted again, this time moving to be face to face with Yachi's sleeping figure.

The blonde had looked so peaceful and unaware, her lips twitching upward as if she was having a good dream about something, and [Name] had wondered why.

What was she dreaming of? Was she in it? Or was it a dream about the mysterious crush who had been the talk of the night? [Name] could only wonder what kind of dreams would go to such perfect and beautiful girls such as Yachi.

Her hand moved, moving to push the blonde strand from Yachi's face. She froze at the sudden shift to Yachi's face, eyes slowly fluttering open.

"[N-Name]?" Yachi's groggy voice murmured, moving her own hand to rub her eyes. She looked up at [Name], blinking a couple of times before letting out a soft yawn. "Can't sleep?" She asked, shifting backward against the wall to give some space between the two.

[Name] shook her head, coming to feel relieved that Yachi hadn't realized what she was doing. She noticed the small smile that crept onto the girl's pale face, letting out a hushed giggle.

"I get it, I usually have a hard time sleeping at the houses of other people," she spoke, yawning once more.

[Name] returned the smile, remaining in silence. The two looked at each other, growing comfortable at the silence between them. Yachi moved her hand under the blanket, slowly placing it over the hand of her best friends.

"Don't worry, though, I'll do what I can to make things a bit more comfortable for you."

Yachi closed her eyes, slowly moving her arms to hug her best friend.

[Name] froze, looking down at the closed distance between the two. The platonic display felt so comforting and loving, making [Name]'s heart beat faster than the speed of light.

Hopefully, Yachi wouldn't notice.
