The Medical Camp
Nandini widened her eyes. "I mean if you don't understand me, misunderstandings badh jayega and you might think that I've still not moved on from Alya, you will ask mom to accept Alya again and she will force me" Manik made a lame excuse that not only him but Nandini found it lame. "You mean to say that I will tell aunty about Alya so you thought you should explain me" she asked him and he has no answer again. "Yaar tu mera har baat ki alag meaning kyu leti ho? Just relax, sleep its already late" he murmured as everyone is deep in sleep.
"Wahi tho, mujhe neend nahi aa rahi hai" she said. "Oh finally we're on same page, cheers even I don't feel like sleeping" he said. "Main ek baat puchu?" she asked. "Ek baat! tum toh humesha kisi na kisi question puchti rehti ho" he said but that couldn't stop her from asking. "Agar aap Alya se move on ho chuka hai tho uss din mujhe kyu reject kiya?" she asked and this brought smile on his face. "Seriously you are asking me this! You rejected me Nandini" he reminded her. "Yeah I know I did that but you told me na that you were also about to say the same" she said. "Tho, what else I have as an option? You already said no and if I say that I would have married you if you said yes, will you not make fun of me?" he asked.
"Don't tell me that you are embarrassed that day because of me, I feel guilty now" she said. "Of course, tumhe guilty hona bhi chahiye, you didn't even listen to me that day, what did you call me? Mumma's boy" he made a face. "Wo tho aap hai na" she laughed at him. "Aur wo salty carrot halwa, you commented on my dress too, you were really rude that day, aise tho tum Siddharth ke saath nahi behave karti ho na" he said and Nandini stopped laughing at him. "Are you serious?" she asked him. "Of course I was!" he said not realizing what she asked. She didn't know what to say.
She plugged in her earphones and played her favorite playlist and closed her eyes. Cool breeze touched her face and she tucked her baby hair behind the ear. He felt bored and took out an ear phone for one of her ears. "Let me hear too" he asked for the ear phone. "Ye songs virtual songs hai, you need to hear with both ear phones on" she said. "Oh in that case Nandini, you should agree to get married, after all these ear phones needed to be paired and why not you, kya pata tumhara life partner bhi virtually tumhe support karega" he said. "Kya bola aapne?" she made a confused face but laughed again.
"I've never heard that Dr. Manik Malhotra is good at neuro surgeries but too bad on cheesy lines" she said. "So what are you good at?" he asked. "Sleeping but ironically I don't feel like sleeping now" she bit her lower lip. "Do you mean that I should say yes to Siddharth?" she asked him. "No I didn't mean that, you take your own time" he choked on the water while drinking. She patted on his head to help him. "Siddharth acha ladka hai, he understands me and chacha and chachi also liked him, but I don't feel the connection with him" she said. "What connection?" he asked curiously.
"That feeling can't be expressed jaise ki you feel special whenever you are around them, you feel like butterflies in the stomach, feeling safe and secure like you're home, their intimacy will make you shiver, you want to live all your life with them, like your world stopped when you are with them. They should mean the world to us" she said with sparkling eyes. "Inme se kitne criteria hai Siddharth mein?" he asked and she narrowed her eyes at him. "Ok lets be practical, I never felt that way with Alya too" he said honestly. "So that mean you never loved her" she said simply.
He laughed at her. "Seriously Nandini!" he controlled his laughter. "Did you ever felt insecure about Alya? Have your ever felt sad these days when she is around you almost all the time? How could you break up with her for obviously no reason I can really see! I mean she realized her mistake, you should have accepted her back, but you instead took her sister's help to break up with her, you didn't give her a second chance, trust should be earned Manik, there's your fault too, when she did not trust you, both of you might have not each other so much that you never trusted each other" she said in an outburst. Reality had hit Manik so hard as he knew most of the answers would be no.
"I'm sorry I didn't mean to hurt your feelings but this is true, as far as I can see, all you have towards Alya is you care about her, I never understood why do you care for her so much, but aaj pata chala ki wo care bhi guilt ki wajah se, so all you feel is guilty for Alya, you blame yourself for everything she goes through when you are around her. Even when she is injured, you're least bothered about Alya but more concentrated on me because you thought I pushed her, all your attention is if I get punishment or not" she said. Manik did not talk. "You always say that you don't love Alya anymore but just think have you ever loved her? Did you experience that true love?" she asked him looking into his eyes.
Throughout his life Manik thought that love is all about hormones but now after hearing from Nandini, he doubted his feelings towards Alya. Cabir has definitely added tadka in Manik's heart. "Then I should accept that tumhara type ka pyaar mujhe kabhi hua hi nahi" he said but saw that Nandini slowly drifted into sleep. He took her ear phones down. He couldn't sleep because of his disturbing thoughts. "Why did I never fought for Alya? I never agreed with her for anything, neither of us had each other on the top of our priorities, we were together for almost 6 years but kabhi aisa nahi feel kiya Alya also had never told me what Nandini was talking about! Does this happen with everyone or is it just Nandini who is exaggerating it? How would I know?" he thought and he never knew when he slept.
Bus stopped in the morning at the location of the camp. Cabir woke up and his eyes popped out when he saw Manik sleeping on Nandini's shoulder and Nandini on his head. He thought that they looked adorable together and tried to wake up Navya to show them to her. He then realized she slept on his shoulder too. He hesitated to wake her up but she woke up just then. "Good morning" he said in his not so usual tone and this embarrassed Navya. "Wo dekho" he showed Nandini and Manik to Navya. She looked at Cabir as if he is an alien. "Instead of waking them up, you're making fun of them, aise so jaye tho gardhan mein pain hoga" she said and went near them to wake them up.
"Seriously ye Madhubala ko aisa laga, Bhagawan isko romantic sense dena hi bhul gaya hoga" he thought and Navya woke them up. Nandini woke up first and Manik did not get up and keep calling his mom. Nandini patted softly on his cheeks and that's when Manik opened his eyes to see Nandini. "I'm sorry" he said and sat back on his seat. He saw Cabir sitting at the back seat. "Good morning sir, good morning Nandini" he wished them but got no response from both of them. Nandini and Navya got down from the bus. "Atleast good morning tho wish kiya karo jiju" Cabir pouted.
"Good morning dear Cabir, what do you like to have tea or coffee?" Manik asked plastering a smile. "Coffee" he said. "Good, go and ask the cook to make coffee for me too and ha jaldi leke aana" he said. They got down. "Yaha par hume koi hotels ya kuch ghar na mila, tho we should make a tent here" he said to Navya and Nandini who wondered as they see nothing there. Manik asked everyone to assemble and gave clear instructions to everyone how to make tents and helped others in doing so. "Wow, hum tents mein rahenge, kitna mazaa aayega" Cabir said excited. "Mazaa nahi machhar ayega, make it quick, a tent for two people to live in, so altogether 5 tents to live in, kitchen and camp ke liye 4 tents" he said and they all took nearly 3 hours to make it all.
"Sir, have you been to medical camps like these?" Navya asked Manik. "Most of the tents we build our own tents and sometimes we find hotels to live in, like last time we lived in hotels" Manik said. "Aryaman bahut lucky hai, isliye wo last time aaya par ab bach gaya" Cabir said after a tiring task. "Cabir, call Aryaman, we don't even know where he is?" Nandini said and Cabir immediately called him. He went aside for signals and finally Aryaman's call connected. "Aryaman, tu kaha gaya yaar, is everything okay?" he asked him.
"Yeah Cabir, I'm good kuch nahi hua" Aryaman assured. "But Mukti ma'am ne bola you took an emergency leave" he asked. "Yeah that's a really long story" Aryaman said. "And I'm all ears" Cabir always makes sure that he don't miss any update. "Wo Sanju hai na uske fiancé Rakesh hai na, I told you about him" Aryaman continued, "I think he is cheating on Sanju with some other girl" he said. "So, kya hua then? how does that let you take an emergency leave?" Cabir enquired. "Sanju had to leave for London yesterday but she said Rakesh went to Lucknow for some work so I thought I should follow him" he said. "Are you crazy Aryaman? Tumne uske liye medical camp chod diya!" Cabir couldn't believe him.
"I know you will think of me as a stupid but Sanju ke saath bahut galat ho raha hai" Aryaman said. "OK, did you reach there? You saw him, Rakesh?" Cabir asked. "No not yet" Aryaman said in a low voice. "Don't lose hope, main ye kisiko nahi bolunga, but be careful ha, yaha signals nahi aa raha hai, just drop a message when you need me" Cabir said. "Yeah sure bro, thank you" Aryaman said. "Eww.. thank you kya hai? No formalities bro, its bro-code" Cabir cut the call. He said Navya and Nandini that Aryaman had to go out of station for some important work and said he is fine. Everyone got freshened up and had lunch. They all set up the equipment ready that they could start their work in the evening.
Few villagers came there and created chaos. Manik came out of his tent. "Aap logon ka problem kya hai? humne yaha ki local MLA se permission liya hai" Manik showed his permit to the head of the village. "Kaun hai wo MLA? He just comes only once in 5 years that too for asking votes, wo kaun hota hai permission denewala?" he said angrily. "But having a medical camp in your village will help you na" Navya said. "We know this is just to show-off his power and you aren't gonna help anyone here, I know" he said. "Aisa nahi hai sir, we are surely here to help you, aapko koi bhi bimaari ho just come to us, we treat and give medicines free of cost" Nandini said.
"Tum humare gaaowalon ko bimaari keh rahi ho?" he said and Nandini nodded her head as no. Manik came near her and stood in front her. "Aap kya kehne chahthe ho?" Manik asked him. "This medical camp shouldn't be here, leave from here, who knows you might have come to spread disease" he said. Manik's anger rose when he accused them. "Hum aise log nahi hai" Navya said again. "Tho hume paise do, otherwise leave from here, you should pay rent for staying here" he demanded 25, 000 rupees from them. "Sir, yaha se chalet hai, ye log pagal lag raha hai" Cabir said. "Cabir, that would be an insult to our profession" Manik said and went inside his tent to get his cheque book. He gave the cheque quoting the amount he asked Manik.
"Iss cheque ke badle, send your villagers here so that we can treat them" Manik said to him. The village head went away with his followers. "It would have been better if we leave from here, I think you did not do right this time sir" Nandini said.
"Don't say that Nandini, maine tumse hi seekha to prioritize the things I love" Manik left from there.
