Dang it
Breeze's POV
'I haven't even stolen anything today!' Was, naturally, the first thought that came into my head when I heard police sirens heading in my direction.
"I swear, you guys do your job a little too well for me." I growled in frustration and ducked into an alley.
I've already been noticed five times this week! People have been keeping more aware with the snakes around... not that there have been too many sightings since the Great Devourer.
I peeked out of the alley way to get a good look at whoever the police men had caught.
"They're... just a butch of kids?" I whispered. I noticed a giant, golden sarcophagus near them. "Trying to steal something three times they're size??"
I tried to get a good look at their faces but they all wore masks, like the wispy teal one that I kept in my bag. Ninja masks.
I chuckled. Just some kids somehow pulling off a big prank. At least they did me a favor. They got the heat off my back for tonight. That'll be nice.
We should pull a prank like that.
I shrugged off the impulsive thought. 'That's illegal Breezy.' I told myself.
I walked farther into the alley. Just a hop, skip, and spin would get me to where I needed to be tonight.
I jumped up and caught the bottom of a metal latter.
"Just casually using the fire escape to get on top of a building that's ten stories high." I huffed, making sure I stepped lightly, as to make no sound at all...
Not talking would help the no sound part though wouldn't it?
"Probably. Does that mean I'm gonna stop? Probably not." I chuckled quietly at myself.
I walked on top of the building until I reached the edge. There was a decent five foot gap between the building I was on and the next one.
I smiled and started humming Weekend Whip.
I threw myself into the motions of the move I learned quite a while ago. It felt so... freeing. To feel as if I was one with the air it self as I spun into a teal-ish tornado.
I laughed at myself as I made the wind twirl around my feet. I pulled over my teal mask.
I took off running. Using the wind to propel myself forward, skipping steps just to keep up with it.
It was almost like flying.
I was pulled out of my playful state of mind by a roar.
"What in Ninjago?" I asked aloud. A creature with fluorescent eyes was lurking in the darkness.
It jumped out and hit me with a powerful claw, throwing me to the ground.
"Ahh!" I screamed, in both fear and pain. I picked myself up and stumbled backwards.
Not this again.
'Where have I seen one of these before?" I asked myself. Then it hit me.
Not the memory. The Grundle.
I sucked in my breath and grasped my shoulder. Luckily, he didn't manage too deep of a wound.
'Of course! The comic shop had a comic on one of these!'
Of course it did.
The beast growled once more.
"Hey, hey, hey!" I yelled at the monster. "Aren't you supposed to be at the Museum?"
The Grundle lunged forward. I dodged.
"On second thought, aren't you supposed to be dead?!"
The beast let out a roar and tried to attack me again.
I ran.
This— this thing was hungry,
And I was not about to be it's meal.
~flashback~
"Mom?" I asked, dipping into our small tent.
"Yes my little black bird?" She said gently. She was covered in our blankets and sitting back on a mountain of pillows, like she always was these days. I climbed up into her lap and laid my head on her chest, listening for her heart beat.
"Tell me a story please?" I begged softly. She brushed her fingers through my hair.
"Which one?"
"The one about monsters."
She laughed.
"Maybe a bit more specific?"
"The one that lived in a cave? The hunter?"
"Ah yes. Once upon a time there was a creature. A valiant hunter who always caught it's prey."
I snuggled closer to her chest.
"It had fluorescent eyes and skin that could break even the strongest metal. Some believed they were once dragons, brought down and corrupted by the darkness."
"What's the darkness?" I asked. I always asked that question.
"The darkness is something inside us all. Some give in to its power, while some refuse to let it take over their minds.
The darkness is a poison. It can turn skin to stone. It can turn even the purest of heart wicked."
"But why is it here? Why is there darkness?" I asked. Again, I asked this every time. I never understand why darkness existed if light felt so much better.
"The darkness has been here since the first realm, my dear. Born in the form of hideous demons. Some say light still exists within them. After all you can't have darkness without a little bit of light."
"Can a demon be good?"
"Of course. Should they fall in love." Mom said a hint of mischief in her voice. She started tickling me.
"Ahh! Make it stop, make it stop!" I laughed. She laughed too.
"I wonder if I could help make a demon good. Everyone deserves kindness. And you said kindness is the simplest form of love." I whispered quietly against her chest. She laughed once again.
"My sweet summer wind, kindness is the simplest form of love we can give. Both to others and ourselves. And I have no doubt that if you ever met an Oni, they'd fall in love."
By the time she finished her sentence, I was already falling into a light sleep.
~end of flashback~
I had managed to find a safe spot to sleep near the museum. Fighting the Grundle seemed all too familiar to me.
I after I woke up (and cleaned myself up after last night) I snuck in just in time to join a tour group.
They we're just about to start.
"Hey!" I said putting on my best smile.
Let's be honest, I didn't pay to come on a tour. So was asking the guy leading it a question the best thing to do?
Probably not.
But if there's anything I've learnt it's that if you act like you belong, people will assume you just do.
Confidence is key.
"Hello kid! Anything I can help you with?" The tour guide asked.
"I was wondering, are we passing by the Grundle exhibit?" I asked.
"Yes! But unfortunately, there is no Grundle to admire. Some kids last night pulled off a big prank. We are currently searching for the bones." He replied gravely.
I gave him a sympathetic smile.
"That's too bad. I hope you find them." I said.
"Do you have a particular interest in the creature? I could give you one of the museum's books on it."
"Actually, I was in the library the other day reading about them and was interested in seeing the skeleton in person." I told him.
"While, I'd like to see you in here on a day when the bones are in their rightful place." He said with a smile. "I have to begin the tour now but don't be afraid to ask questions!"
He walked off and announced the start of the tour. Everyone began to follow him, most trying to snag spots close to him. I followed from the very back.
We pasted several exhibits before reaching the room where the Grundle was supposed to be.
I spotted the kids from last night sitting on a bench. I tried to listen to what they were saying.
"How are we supposed to get out of here now?" The red one asked.
"They really aren't gonna let us go unless our parents pick us up? Zane doesn't have parents! Kai doesn't have his parents! Are we just supposed to sit here?" The black one complained.
The one in blue must of noticed me starring at them because he gave me a weird look.
When the tour group pasted them he leaned back and grabbed my arm.
"Jay! What are you doing?" The one in white asked.
"Hey! Um... none of our parents are in town right now and we're being watched by Kai's older sister, but they're blaming us for something we didn't do but they won't let us go unless family picks us up." Jay blabbed.
"What the heck Jay?" The black one asked.
"Anyway we were wondering if you could pretend to be our babysitter so we can get out of here? Kai's sister doesn't have a phone so we can't ask her to pick us up."
"Jay this is a awful idea." Kai whisper-shouted.
I looked at them.
A chance to cause chaos? Heck yeah!
I thought about where the reckless thought had come from, before deciding to help them. They were lying about their parents being out of town (in the fact that it didn't sound like they had any at all) but hey... street kids gotta help each other.
Always.
"Sure! Give me a minute." I told them.
"Really?!" "Wait what!?" "What the heck???" "This is going to end so bad." Were their replies.
(A/N Ten points to whoever can guess who said what)
I ran over to two police men chatting in a corner of the room.
"Um... hey! Excuse me sirs' can I talk with you for a minute?" I asked putting on my most innocent, flustered, looking smile.
"I don't see why not. Is there anything we can help you with young lady?" One of the two police men asked.
"Actually yes," I told him gesturing over to the boys still sitting on a bench. "You see, I'm in charge of watching those little guys over there and they got away from me early this morning. I've been looking all over the city for them."
The two grown men shared a look of pity. No doubt thinking that I've had my hands full.
How easy it is to fool people...
'That's not nice...'
"Well ma'am, they've caused quite a bit of trouble..." the second answered hesitantly. I fake gasped.
"I'm so sorry! So, so, so, sorry! I promise they receive proper punishment. Is it okay if I take them home, if everything is in order? I can pay for anything they broke... or at least... work it off..." I said quickly. I watched as more pity filled their eyes.
How gullible.
"You know what, kid?" The first officer said kindly. "Don't worry about it."
"Yeah," the other one cut in, "just take them home and make sure they don't get into anymore trouble."
"Would you like us to call your parents and smooth things over with them for you?" The first offered.
"Oh! No, it's okay! I just really need to get them home. Thank you for your help! I'm so sorry they got into so much trouble..." I said, already walking over to the boys.
Once I was close to the boys and the police were out of earshot I smiled.
"You guys are free to go!" I chimed. They stared in disbelief.
"I can't believe that worked..." the black one sighed shaking his head.
"Thank you so much!" Jay chirped.
"Indeed. Thank you for helpin—"
"C'mon guys we have to go!" Kai cut the white one off. They all nodded silent thanks and started towards the door, gradually picking up speed. I jogged a few steps behind them to make it look as if I were trying to herd them.
I got two sympathetic smiles from the police as I ran out the door.
That went well.
A/N
Surprisingly it did go well.
Anyway I hope you liked this chapter!
