Escape

Biana P.O.V

"Get off!" I said, shaking Ruy's hand off my arm as we light-leaped to a secure location.

"I just saved you!" Ruy said, grabbing the edge of my cloak. "Saving you wasn't part of the deal, and yet I still did it! I should assume you would be a little grateful you little-"

"And I didn't have to agree to the deal and help you, yet here I am!" I shouted back, crossing my arms. "And you don't get to tell me what to do!"

Ruy threw his hands up in frustration and paced around the woods that we had landed in. "Look Biana!" he said finally. "If you don't want to help, then go! I can't deal with this anymore!" He turned his back on me and started to jog away.

"HEY!" I yelled. "WAIT!" I ran up to catch up with Ruy. "I'm sorry, ok? I need your help, and you need mine, so why don't we try to work together ok?"

Sighing, Ruy nodded.

"OK then, what now?" I asked reluctantly. I didn't like that I had to trust Ruy, but right now, he was my only option.

Ruy had broken me out of wherever the Neverseen's base was, and taken me out of the area before Gethen realized that anything had happened. Ruy and I had agreed on a temporary partnership, as we both had the same goal: to get out of the Neverseen base, and to destroy Gethen.

I still remembered the faithful day that Ruy had broken me out. It felt amazing, and wonderful. I remembered how much pain I was in, how each time somebody came into my cell I knew that it was going to happen to me again. It was the worst moments of my life.

I remembered how that day, I was curled up on the stone bench in the room. Shivering, though not from the cold, but from the pain and the effort to not give into the voice in my head that was telling me to just end it all.

Then, Ruy came in and I screamed when he grabbed me. I thought that he was going to drag me to that....that room again. He had grabbed my arm and whispered the plan to me. How he needed me, and how if I cooperated, I could get out of there. I didn't even use my brain logically, I just nodded and followed. If he planned to kill me, that was fine too, as I had planned on doing it myself.

But, somehow, and I still didn't know how, or why, I was out. Ruy let me out, and I still couldn't possibly figure out the reason for him doing so. He had pulled off his mask and cloak, abandoning in a hidden spot in the trees. I finally was able to see his face.

He was a blond elf (and decently good-looking I thought to myself grudgingly.) He was a lot younger then I thought he would have been, and his eyes were a pale blue, silvery color. They looked a lot like Tam's.

Stop! I thought to myself. I couldn't keep thinking about Tam. Any hope of that happening was gone. I saw his face when he saw me and Ruy going toward the cave. Ruy had led me there because he knew a secret exit that he had found through one of the rock cracks. I had put on the Neverseen cloak and mask to hide myself and blend in, and I had just removed the mask when we entered the cave. That was when I saw them.

All my friends where there, but for what reason I didn't know. All I saw was Tam and Marella, a little too close for my comfort. A pain hit my chest when Fitz rushed up. My brother! I wanted to run to him, and to hug him, but Ruy held me back.

His eyes had been darting around suspiciously. "It might be a trick," he muttered. "I didn't receive any word about more prisoners."

Then, Tam came up to me, with such disbelief and pain in his eyes that I wanted to cry, and to run to them. Suddenly, before I could do anything, Ruy pushed me behind him and let out a force field. I didn't understand, but then realized that the place had momentarily gone shadow-less, and Tam was standing there, looking madder than I had ever seen him before.

Shadows swirled around him, his silver-blue eyes turned dark by the shadows and hatred for Ruy. Linh was trying to get Tam to stop, but he wouldn't listen. I didn't know what to do, or who to help. I didn't want to hurt Ruy, even though he had done so many wicked and evil things, but he had still saved me....

Then, it was all over. A wave of flames erupted from some unknown location, and Ruy swore violently as the cave began to collapse. Ruy grabbed me, just as a large part of the wall landed where I had been standing. He light-leaped us away, and now here I was.

Suddenly, a thought occurred to me as I was remembering everything. I glanced up at Ruy, who was know examining some trees.

"Why'd you save me?" I asked him. Ruy turned around suddenly and stared at me.

"What do you mean?" he asked feigning stupidity, but I knew that he knew what I was talking about.

"Why'd you save me from the rocks?" I asked. "You don't need me anymore technically."

Ruy fell silent, and, although I was no Empath, I could tell that he was thinking and battling different emotions around his brain.

When he spoke again, his voice was rough, like he was slightly choked up from talking about it. "You remind me of her," he said finally.

My interest was immediately peaked. "Who?"

Ruy looked at the trees again. "Wren."

"Who?" I asked again, even more confused now.

"Her name is Wren!" he said in a furious voice. Then he quieted down a little. "But I guess you may know her as Umber."

"Umber?!" I asked. "What do I have anything to do with HER? That MONSTER?"

"She wasn't always like that..." Ruy said quietly.

I stopped protesting when I saw his voice drop, and I sat down next to him quietly. His head was in his hands.

"I met her in Exillium," Ruy said suddenly. "She was amazing, and powerful, and beautiful, and I didn't know why she was in there,  but honestly," he sighed. "I didn't care. She didn't know what to do about me, and when we finally got out of that place, she finally accepted me."

"So..." I was hesitant to ask. "What happened?"

"Gethen. He found us, and he seemed so sincere, and so real when he said he understood us, and he sympathized with all our troubles. We were stupid, and young and fresh from Exillium, and we went with him. And then, after being there for so long, it was like I didn't know another life beside being there. And hurting people, and killing them. It was like there was no other alternative."

"Something was changing her, Wren, or Umber whatever you want to call her. She looked different, not that that mattered. It was like something dark had gotten to her insides. I didn't know what to do about her. It doesn't matter anyway, now." Ruy said, staring up at the sky into nothingness. "She's dead now. I can't believe the rest of them didn't even try to help her. They...they just left her there."

"Now there's no reason for me to live and be here anymore." Ruy said. "You just reminded me of her, and when that Tam came to the Neverseen, I couldn't help it. He was saying your name in the middle of the night, I heard him from my room. I may have accidentally slipped my watch time and left the window unlocked by accident. I thought to myself, even if I screwed Wren and I's life, maybe I could save the lives of you guys."

"You... you did that?" I asked, staring at Ruy in disbelief.

He nodded silently, and we sat there together, in a silence that seemed unbreakable.
