Chapter 19
Dex P.O.V
If this was what Marella, Linh and the others did on a daily basis, I wasn't sure that I wanted any part in it.
After defeating the Neverseen member who had taken us here, who's name seemed to be Trix, we heading into the giant stone base through the gaping hole in the side.
Linh was walking ahead with steady resolve, and her every step seemed to be quicker than her last. Marella and I trailed slightly behind, and I noticed that she was fidgeting with the edge of her cloak, pulling bits of loose string loose from the cape, and leaving a makeshift trail on the floor.
"Are you okay?" I whispered down to her, and she flinched slightly, before slowly shaking her head.
"It's hard, to be back here again, especially after fighting my Dad, and I just feel so cold all over, and just being back here inside these walls brings back bad memories, and a whole lot of pain. It's actually good that you don't remember, because I wouldn't want to remember here either."
"That-that was your Dad?" I asked, shocked, when she nodded.
"I'm so sorry," was all I could really say. I didn't know how to help her, especially since from my point of view, I had only known her for a few days. It was hard to not be able to comfort somebody you cared about, and just having to watch.
"Come on," Linh whispered to us. She was staring down the pathway so hard, I was sure she had tunnel vision. "Marella could you please get some flames ready? It's kind of dark."
"Gotcha," Marella replied, and suddenly two small balls of fire sparked from her burnt hands.
Linh gave a small smile towards her and stared walking down the path. We followed, and I observed her. It was almost like she could sense her twin's presence, as she seemed much more gentle, and much more like how Marella described her to me. Her voice was calmer and more gentle, and I could almost see her smile lines again.
Venturing down the corridor, I winced as I saw rows of cages, right out in the open. I looked inside one of them, and quickly pulled my head out of it. Inside it there was a full skeleton of an elf, and their clothes were still on them, but they were charred black. I didn't want to know what happened to them. Linh froze in place when she saw it and we glanced at each other, horrible things flashing through my mind. What if-
Linh, who was probably sharing the same thoughts as me, stepped into the cage and looked down at the skeleton, grimacing as she plucked through the bones and pulled off the tunic, examining it carefully.
Marella stepped forward and glanced down on the charred shirt. She gently placed a hand n Linh's shoulder and pulled her away. "It's not him Linh. The charring is too old for just a few weeks ago."
Linh let out a shaky breath of relief and we continued down the path, although seeing the dead body made everything seem way more ominous now.
"This way," Linh whispered, and Marella and I followed her. It was almost like she could sense where her twin was, like the way a shark would sense blood, or a way a dog could pick up a scent.
Linh pressed her hand to a wall, and her face hardened into firm resolve. "Through here."
"Linh..." Marella said, sounding concerned. "That's solid rock."
"No!" Linh said, her voice rising. "There's a way through it! I know there is!"
I stepped forward and placed my hand on it, and carefully felt it, thinking. "She's right," I turned towards Marella saying. "There's some sort of hidden passage. Let me see if I can find the trigger."
I began to feel around the wall, and detected some sort of wires entangled with the wall. Linh and Marella watched me as I worked, and unlike the other times they watched me, I felt entirely confident and in my right space. There was something so steady about technology. The rules would never change, no matter how many tricks you tried to pull, the fundamentals would always be the same. It was hard to say that for almost anything else.
I pushed the wired forward throughout the rock, and pulled on them. I felt them connected to a lever hidden somewhere alongside the wall. Using the wires as a life line, I pulled them in all directions, trying to sense where they were coming from. After a few minutes, I found it. I gradually pushed my hand into the fake rock that was covering the lever and pulled it, which revealed a number pad from the ground.
I couldn't help but admire the technology talent of whoever made this. It was precise, and I could tell it was very difficult to make. I pulled open the electrical source of the number pad and began to tinker around with the wires, seeing if I could trick the system into thinking I had submitted the code without actually typing it in.
A few more minutes passed, and I could hear Linh and Marella burning and attempting to erode the rock. It wasn't going to fall by brute force.
I felt something click inside me, a feeling that managed to be both subtle and loud at the exact same time. The keypad flickered, once, then twice, and suddenly went black.
Marella and Linh glanced up from their work, both of them utterly exhausted, right as the cave went dark, and started to shake.
"What the-" Marella started, but then, I watched triumphantly as the cave "wall" slowly slid down, revealing a long hallway and a cage.
I vaguely recognized the captives as the two boys who were arguing with each other the day I had woken up with amnesia. I turned toward Linh and Marella for confirmation that these were the boys we were looking for, but their faces said it all.
Linh looked like she had frozen in time, and I was about to check is she was still conscious before I heard her speak.
"T-T-Tam?"
