Chapter 25
The morning sun bathed the breakfast table in its golden glow, illuminating the vibrant spread of food. The faint aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the scent of warm pancakes, but the usual lively chatter seemed somewhat subdued. Sanjana sat quietly, her gaze fixed on the fruit salad before her. She moved her fork absentmindedly, pushing the pieces of melon and berries around her plate.
Jungkook's keen eyes immediately picked up on her lack of appetite. He set down his glass of orange juice, leaning forward slightly. “Sanjana,” he called gently, his tone laced with concern, “what’s going on? You’re barely eating.”
Startled, Sanjana glanced up at him, her face briefly clouded with confusion before she forced a small smile. “I’m fine. Just not very hungry.”
Taehyung’s brows furrowed, his playful nature masking the deeper worry beneath. “Not hungry? That’s not like you. Come on, you need to eat something. Skipping meals isn’t healthy.” Sanjana turned towards him. “I’m fine, really,” she insisted, trying to redirect the conversation.
But Taehyung wasn’t one to give up so easily. Without missing a beat, he picked up her fork, speared a piece of melon, and held it out to her. “Here. Just one bite.”
Sanjana’s cheeks flushed as she leaned back in her chair, bringing her hands before for denial. “Taehyungiee, you don’t need to feed me. Its ok.”
Taehyung’s lips curled into a teasing smirk. “Clearly, you’re not doing a great job of that right now. Come on, just one bite. For me?” His voice softened, the gentle plea in his tone making it harder for her to refuse.
“No,” she said firmly yet playfully, though her resolve was beginning to waver.
By now, Jungkook had been silently observing the scene from across the table. His sharp gaze flicked between them, his jaw tightening with every word Taehyung spoke. He could feel the simmering jealousy stirring within him, but he remained quiet, unwilling to make a scene—yet.
“Sanjana,” Taehyung tried again, his voice dropping to a more intimate tone that sent a shiver through her. “Don’t make me beg. You know I won’t stop until you take a bite.”
Sanjana sighed, her cheeks now a deep shade of pink. “Fine,” she relented with a soft smile, leaning forward and taking the bite he offered. “Happy now?”
Taehyung’s grin widened, his satisfaction evident. “Very.”
Jungkook’s grip on his coffee mug tightened, his knuckles whitening as his jaw clenched. The playful intimacy between Taehyung and Sanjana felt like a punch to the gut. Just as he was about to say something, his phone buzzed on the table. Glancing at the screen, he recognized the caller and stood abruptly.
“I have work to handle,” he said coldly, his voice void of emotion as he left the table.
Taehyung watched him leave, a faint smirk playing on his lips. “He’s so predictable,” he murmured under his breath, turning his attention back to Sanjana.
Later That Morning...
Jungkook’s steps were deliberate as he made his way to Hoseok’s room. He knocked once before pushing the door open without waiting for a response. Inside, Hoseok sat at his desk, his head resting in his hand as he pored over a stack of papers. His stethoscope lay discarded to the side, and a visible crease marked his usually cheerful face.
“Hobi,” Jungkook called, his voice steady but sharp. “What’s going on?”
Hobi startled slightly, his hand instinctively moving to cover the papers on his desk. “It’s nothing, Jungkook,” he replied, forcing a smile.
Jungkook’s eyes narrowed as he stepped closer, his presence commanding. “Don’t lie to me. What are those papers?”
Hobi hesitated, the weight of the truth evident in his expression. Finally, he sighed and pushed the stack toward Jungkook. “They’re Sanjana’s medical reports.”
The words hit Jungkook like a thunderclap. His chest tightened, his breath hitching as he processed the revelation. “What about her?” he demanded, his tone sharper now, tinged with worry.
Hobi hesitated, his voice lowering as he explained, “Her condition isn’t improving, Jungkook. The medications I prescribed aren’t working as expected. Even with the strict diet and schedule I gave her, there’s no progress. She’s still too weak.”
Jungkook’s fists clenched at his sides, his jaw locking as a wave of panic and anger surged through him. “Does she know? But why it's happening?”
Hobi shook his head. “No. I didn’t want to worry her unnecessarily. But Jungkook, I’m really concerned. She needs to be monitored closely, and if things don’t improve soon…”
He didn’t wait to hear the rest. Jungkook spun on his heel, his mind racing, his heart pounding as he stormed out of the room. Panick current for flew through his veins thinking any one of the bad possible outcomes.
And there in own room, Sanjana was seated on the edge of her bed, her gaze distant as she absentmindedly fiddled with the charm bracelet on her wrist. The events of the morning still lingered in her mind, and she barely noticed the sound of her door bursting open.
“Jungkook?” she asked, startled, as he stormed into the room, his chest heaving, his expression a mix of anger, worry, and something she couldn’t quite place. Seeing his condition her own heartbeat fasten.
Without a word, he crossed the room in long strides and wrapped his arms around her. The force of the hug nearly knocked the air out of her, and she froze, caught off guard by the sudden intimacy.
“You should have told me,” he said, his voice rough and muffled against her hair. Involuntarily her hands started caressing his back to calm him down, when she her own heart was racing.
“Told you what?” she asked, her confusion evident.
He pulled back slightly, his hands gripping her shoulders as he stared into her eyes, deep in her eyes. “About your health. About the reports. Hobi told me everything.”
Her eyes widened, her breath hitching. “I… I didn’t know,” she whispered, her voice trembling by tension. Seeing that Jungkook’s gaze softened, but the worry in his eyes remained. “Your condition isn’t improving, Sanjana. The medications, the diet—it’s not working. And you didn’t even realize?”
Tears welled up in her eyes, and she shook her head. “I thought I was getting better… I didn’t think it was this bad. I...I...”
He pulled her back into his arms, holding her tightly as though afraid she might disappear. “You don’t have to go through this alone,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “I’m here, Sanjana. I’ll take care of you. I promise.”
Her tears soaked into his shirt as she clung to him, the weight of his words settling in her heart. For a moment, the world outside faded, leaving only the two of them in their shared vulnerability.
Jungkook tightened his hold, his mind already racing with plans. Whatever it took, he would find a way to make her better. No matter the cost, he would protect her. Always. "Just tell me what's the matter, hmmm..."
Sanjana was going to tell him something.
