Chapter 29
The next day was a holiday. All schools, colleges, government offices, and major markets were closed for the day as it was a commemorative holiday for South Korea. Taehyung didn't understand much, as he never heard his father or any estate staff get this holiday. He was more interested in asking Yoongi for a favour as Yoongi explained to him.
"Will you come with us tomorrow then? For a sightseeing day?" Taehyung gestured and asked Yoongi. It did not take Yoongi even a moment before he said yes.
After fixing up a time for the next morning, Yoongi left their house. It was yet another fun-filled evening, which had become the norm in this small, cozy home of Taehyung and Jungkook. Taehyung was just wrapping up the chores, clearing the kitchen, and preparing for sleep time.
Jungkook was not shadowing him, surprisingly. He stood in front of the mirror, wearing Taehyung's pants and shirt. The buttons were all crossed in the wrong eye holes and he was trying to tuck the shirt into the pants.
Taehyung was going towards the other end of the house when he crossed Jungkook. This immediately made the younger boy a little self-conscious, so Taehyung thought it was best to pretend to ignore it. The smile that came on his lips as he turned his head and continued walking was filled with endearment and fondness.
Taehyung found it cute that Jungkook was comfortable trying on his clothes. But what he missed noticing was that Jungkook was not trying to look like him. Jungkook was trying to look like Yoongi. He chose the brown khakis from Taehyung's small collection and a plain cotton white shirt. He was trying to dress in the way Yoongi did. He was trying to feel if his waist also looked as delicate as Yoongi's in those tucked-in clothes.
As Taehyung returned to the kitchen, Jungkook turned, and his little tongue came out as he face-palmed himself. He didn't know it, but he blushed. He didn't know it, but he was embarrassed. Jungkook didn't know it, but he was smiling, a smile that was pursed, thus creating small dimples near his lips.
Then morning came. Taehyung had tried his best to explain to Jungkook what they would be doing throughout the day. In his heart, he had planned all this for Jungkook. The boy had stayed holed up on this terrace since the time they arrived in Seoul. He hoped the younger one understood that they would have a lot of fun that day.
Taehyung woke Jungkook up with a little tug where their fingers were interlocked. Jungkook was now doing most of his chores on his own. Tying shoelaces and shorts' strings was the one thing that kept coming to Taehyung for his help. There were times when Taehyung thought, Does he actually not know this or does he just like to trouble me? But the truth was, he liked it when Jungkook approached him for some help.
As Taehyung took a shower right after Jungkook, he didn't get to see what Jungkook was wearing. Approaching the mirror to comb his hair, he saw Jungkook standing there and struggling to tuck the shirt in. It was the same set Jungkook was trying on the previous night and Taehyung smiled to himself thinking - Ah, so he did understand that it was going to be a fun day, and the boy made some efforts to dress up.
It completely escaped him that Jungkook was trying to emulate Yoongi. Jungkook knew what he was doing but maybe didn't understand why.
As Taehyung had insisted on paying his share for two people, Yoongi thought it was best to travel by public transport. It was not as packed as on normal working days but because it was a holiday and people had made some plans, it was not as empty as they would have liked it to be.
They found a place for two to sit and Taehyung urged Yoongi to sit on one and made Jungkook sit securely on the other. He knew Jungkook wouldn't touch poles or handles to take support. As soon as Jungkook sat down he was immediately taken in by the vibrancy of the city life, the speed of the train, and the scenery of the sky and trees.
It seemed like everything around him had Jugkook's attention but in reality, that wasn't the case. Jungkook extended his hand subconsciously and grabbed the hem of the jacket Taehyung was wearing. Taehyung didn't react much to it and kept looking out of the window in front of him as well.
However, there was one person whose silent eyes were on them. He was sitting right there. Smiling to himself. And wondering what did these two have? Nothing, as per the worldly norms. They were not even complete individuals (in the conventional sense of the word) but their bond, and the love they shared felt so whole. How was that possible?
Who decided that success and happiness should depend on material possessions, societal norms, and external validation? For Yoongi, these were two people who seemed as complete as possible, not caring about any of that at all. This embodied a paradox to everything Yoongi knew. This was a love that did not conform to societal norms and expectations. It wasn't measured in grand gestures and expressions.
It was a love that existed in the spaces between the words, in the comfort of silences, and in the warmth of being there.
Suddenly, the seat next to Yoongi became available, and Taehyung took it, the distance and angle causing his jacket to slip from Jungkook's hands. The younger one, who had been sitting calmly until then, began to shift in his place.
Yoongi and Taehyung's conversation flowed naturally, as it always did. As Jungkook sat scratching the window surface, Taehyung took the opportunity to thank Yoongi for joining them that day.
Taehyung didn't pay much attention to Jungkook's movements, but Yoongi did. He could tell Jungkook was uncomfortable, both with the distance between him and Taehyung and with Yoongi's presence. He'd noticed it from the moment he met Jungkook. The boy had never been disrespectful to him, but Yoongi had picked up on that vibe. And the vibe was very strong at the time, with Jungkook sitting right next to him.
The train came to a halt at a station, and Yoongi indicated that they should get off. They were heading to an operational museum. This was close to Yoongi's university campus and featured an exhibit of music from the century.
The beauty of the museum was that the music was not only heard; they used different mediums to let the visitors feel the vibrations of the music. As they toured the same area, it was an immersive experience for all three of them. Once Taehyung discovered he could sit on various things, like a drum-shaped chair or a guitar-shaped bench, and "feel those vibrations," there was no stopping him. He kept hopping from one seat to another for 45 minutes and then settled.
He sat on a couch that was shaped like a saxophone and settled there. It seemed like the most beautiful feeling to him. After a few minutes, he removed his shoes and even pulled his feet up on the couch.
He sat there watching Yoongi take a tour with a lot of calmness around him. He thought maybe he had visited the place many times and wasn't as excited as him. What he didn't notice was how many people around him had been touring the place. Suddenly, he started looking around the room frantically. He couldn't spot Jungkook for a couple of minutes. Yoongi realised the issue, and came to him, tapped him on the shoulder, and pointed in a direction.
Yoongi was already watching in that direction with a very beautiful smile, filled with awe and endearment. Taehyung's eyes followed the direction his finger was pointing in.
There he was. Jungkook. Dancing. He had seen this Jungkook just once before. That one night when he had gone to steal that horse from the Jeon estate while he was busy swooning over Yoongi. Not steal—borrow (he corrected himself mentally). There were days when he saw Jungkook sit by the window of their house, looking out and smiling at the birds flowing or cars passing. There were times when he thought that although Jungkook looked happy, he never looked as happy as Taehyung saw him in those 30 seconds at that party when Jungkook was dancing in the garden.
This was the same Jungkook. This was the Jungkook he had been waiting to meet. Taehyung immediately sprung to his feet and walked a few steps toward Jungkook. He didn't go too close, as he knew Jungkook would get startled and might just go back into his shell.
Yoongi was taken aback and didn't understand what had just happened. He saw Taehyung standing there a few feet away from him and looking back in his direction - maybe to look for him. As soon as Taehyung spotted Yoongi he gestured with great urgency for him to come closer.
"What song is he listening to?" Taehyung gestured in the simplest way possible as he realised that Jungkook was listening to a song now.
"What are you saying, Aehyun?" Yoongi was confused, as he was trying to make sense of what was happening.
"What song is he listening to?" Taehyung repeated his gestures with more urgency.
"It's an English song - Bring Back My Bonnie To Me," Yoongi answered, not sure how knowing this would mean anything to Taehyung.
"I need that cassette. The song's cassette," Taehyung signalled. The things surrounding them made his job simpler. A cassette player was lying just next to him.
"What...Why... " Yoongi mouthed out loud in confusion but Taehyung didn't bother answering back. He just stood there, arms crossed in front of his chest, a broad, peaceful, and also proud smile on his lips. He stood there, mesmerized, watching Jungkook be the happiest he had ever seen.
He couldn't hear how tone-deaf Jungkook sounded. He didn't realize how off-beat his steps were against the music. He didn't need to know anything about those things that took away the beauty of spontaneity. He just knew that Jungkook looked happy and he wanted to take his dose of Jungkook's happiness home.
Yoongi headed towards the counter to find out where he could find and buy the cassette featuring the song. There was a record shop just at the exit of the museum and Yoongi learned that he could buy it from there and it was in stock.
As they exited, Yoongi did the needful and handed the packet to Taehyung. He also handed him another packet which was gift-wrapped., Yoongi showed him the card which was stuck to the top of it. What Taehyung felt as he read the card, was pure glee. Taehyung was never known to control his emotions, so he gave a tight hug to Yoongi and pulled apart to say thank you again and again and again. Yoongi had to hold his hand from touching his chin again and he cupped Taehyung's face with his free hand, conveying his happiness that Taehyung had accepted the gift.
It was a Walkman. Yoongi had realized after spending many days at their house that there was no cassette player there. And needless to say, Taehyung was just grateful, knowing this would make Jungkook so happy.
Jungkook stood there, watching. He was taking one step towards them and two steps back. The sucking on his lower lip was quite exaggerated and the spot fidgeting only increased with each second.
The moment Yoongi caressed Taehyung's cheek, Jungkook did a tiny foot stomp before turning and walking in the opposite direction.
